Combat report: Russian jets strike 27 terrorist facilities in Syria overnight
“The [Russian] bombers… targeted eight militant strongholds in the province of Homs. The militant fortifications were completely destroyed by the strikes,” said Igor Konashenkov, spokesman for the Russian Defense Ministry.
The Russian planes hit 11 Islamic State training camps in the Syrian provinces of Raqqa and Hama, he added.
“The infrastructure used by terrorists for training has been eradicated.”

‘Which side are you fighting for?’ Russia blasts US for refusing to share intel on ISIS
The refusal to share intelligence on terrorists “just confirms once more what we knew from the very start, that the US goals in Syria have little to do with creating the conditions for a political process and national reconciliation,” Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said Thursday.
“I would risk saying that by doing this the US and the countries that joined the US-led coalition are putting themselves in a politically dubious position. The question is: which side are you fighting for in this war?”

Bernie Sanders finally opens up about Jewish childhood
I interviewed Bernie Sanders a couple years ago, when word first circulated that the Vermont senator might seek the presidency. Though he knew about JTA going in — and must have known questions about his Jewish background were coming — he didn’t want to get into it.
I wrote at the time:
“But Sanders is hesitant to draw a connection between his Jewish background and his priorities as a senator. With a series of observations about the Jewish history of rootlessness and oppression, Sanders begins to describe the role of his lower-middle-class upbringing in forging him into the Congress’ only self-described socialist. Then he catches himself. ‘This isn’t a profile,’ he declared, interrupting himself.”
It kind of is though, I remember thinking.

ISIS training militants from Russia in Afghanistan, ‘US and UK citizens among instructors’
“There are several camps operated by [Islamic State, previously ISIS/ISIL, in Afghanistan] that train people from Central Asia and some regions of Russia. They speak Russian there,” said Zamir Kabulov, President Putin’s special representative for Afghanistan.
He added that there is a wide national variety of instructors in those camps. There are Arabs, Pakistanis and even people with US and British citizenship, he said.

Iranian Jewish MP condemns attacks on mosques
Siamak Moreh Sedgh says ‘there is no difference between a church, temple and mosque. All of them are places of worship’
The sole Jewish member of Iran’s parliament has condemned terror attacks on mosques and all places of worship.
“Mosques are the best element for unity in [the] Muslim world but have fallen into the hands of terrorist groups and are being destroyed,” said MP Siamak Moreh Sedgh, the Iranian Mehr news agency reported Tuesday.
Sedgh’s comments came two weeks after a suicide bombing claimed by the Islamic State group targeted Iran-backed Shiite rebels at a mosque in Yemen’s capital, killing at least 25 people and wounding dozens more during holiday prayers.
Sedgh added, “All divine temples are the center of God’s attention. There is no difference between a church, temple and mosque. All of them are places of worship,” the report said.
IS, which controls swaths of territory in Iraq and Syria, has repeatedly targeted Shiites in Yemen’s capital and elsewhere.

European Parliament to remember Israeli victims of terror spree
(JTA) — The European Parliament Delegation for Relations with Israel said it will commemorate victims of what the body called “acts of terror” in the past week.
Fulvio Martusciello, the Italian-born chair of the delegation responsible for parliamentary ties with the Jewish state, said Thursday that he intended to have the “names of the Israeli victims” read out during the delegation’s meeting on Oct. 15.
“I express my condolences to the Israeli families of those who in the past week in Jerusalem [were] victims of acts of terror,” Martusciello wrote. “These attacks are a crime that not only undermine any prospects for peace but also create a negative image of a sacred city for all religions.”

‘Jerry and the Falafel’ and other Israel-themed ‘Seinfeld’ episodes
Jerry Seinfeld is set to perform in Israel for the first time, with a stand-up comedy show scheduled for December in Tel Aviv.
Thus, in the spirit of Modern Seinfeld — an always-funny Twitter feed that imagines new “Seinfeld” episodes in the age of social media and Netflix — here are some potential plots for Jerry going to Israel.
As in at least a couple of real episodes, imagine Jerry is traveling for a gig — and he brings the whole gang.
“George and the Shiva”: The favorite uncle of George’s new Israeli girlfriend dies, and hoping to earn boyfriend points, George attends the shiva. Having spent some time in the Israeli sun, however, he notices a mark on his neck and worries he is getting skin cancer. He checks the mirror every five minutes to see if the mark is growing. At the shiva, he keeps lifting up the drapes over the mirrors, upsetting the mourners. Eventually he gets into a shoving match with the dead man’s widow.

Donald Trump gets priestly blessing from Jew for Jesus
CNN reported that Donald Trump last week met with “Christian, Jewish leaders.”
I tried to but could not track down which “Jewish leaders” were in the group. What also puzzled me was that it was the first day of Sukkot: That didn’t rule out the presence of a “Jewish leader,” but it made it less likely.
The leader, it turns out, was not of a group that would conventionally be understood as Jewish.
On Sept. 30, Jewish Insider noted the Sept. 28 CNN story, and paired it with another report from the following day by the Christian Broadcasting Network, which identified one of the participants as Messianic Jewish Rabbi Kirt Schneider.
