(JTA) — Poland’s new defense minister has asserted that the anti-Semitic “Protocols of the Elders of Zion” is true.

The appointment of Antoni Macierewicz of the right-wing Justice and Law Party, which earned a majority in the country’s recent national elections, was announced Monday.

The “Protocols,” which purports to be about a Jewish cabal planning world domination through the economy and media, has been proven to be a hoax.

Germany’s ruling party pans EU labeling guidelines

(JTA) – Germany’s ruling party, the Christian Democratic Union, spoke out against the European Union’s new labeling guidelines for Israel.

“This decision might not bring advantages in consumer protection,” Jurgen Hardt, foreign policy spokesman of the parliamentary group in the Bundestag of the party of German Chancellor Angela Merkel told JTA on Thursday about new regulations published the previous day by the European Commission. “In this case there foremost is a danger of a stigma. An anti-Israeli movement might exploit the decision and put it to use on anti-Israeli campaigns.”

The regulations adopted Wednesday require separate labeling for Israeli products sold in the European Union when they are either packaged or produced in the West Bank, eastern Jerusalem or the Golan Heights. It also requires labels on such products specify whether they were produced by Israelis or Palestinians.

Sweden is introducing temporary border controls to halt the influx of refugees and to screen those trying to enter the country illegally. The 10-day closure, effective from Thursday at noon, was announced by the country’s interior minister, Anders Ygeman. TrendsEU refugee & migrant influx

“A record number of refugees are arriving in Sweden. The migration office is under strong pressure… and the police believe there is a threat against public order,” Ygeman told a press conference.

Border controls, the minister believes, will “bring order” to the national asylum system. Ygeman mentioned the refugees will be given options to apply for asylum in Sweden or leave the country. Stockholm may consider extending the border controls for 20 days.

The restrictions will primarily affect the Oresund bridge where migrants cross from Denmark, as well as ferry ports in the south that receive vessels from Denmark and Germany. The government has already asked the ferry companies in Germany to check passengers’ IDs before they board boats bound for Sweden.

Sweden, which receives the most migrants per capita in the EU, says it has welcomed more than 120,000 people since January. By the end of the year, up to 190,000 asylum seekers are expected to reach the country, more than doubling the number who came in 2014, when the Scandinavian country received 81,000 refugees.

The officers arrested Azzam al-Shalalda, 20, who is accused of stabbing an Israeli man who exited his ar after coming under attack by rock-throwing Palestinians near Jerusalem. Shalalda was shot during the stabbing attack, but escaped and was being treated in the Hebron-area hospital.

Dozens of Palestinians have been injured in clashes with Israeli forces on the anniversary of former Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat’s death. Youths threw stones and burned tires while Israeli security forces responded with tear gas and live bullets. TrendsPalestinian statehood

At least four people were wounded by live ammunition near Ramallah, in Al-Bireh, the Palestinian health ministry said. Another person reportedly remains in a critical condition and is undergoing surgery after being shot in the heart.

Clashes in Al-Bireh erupted after a few hundred Palestinians marched towards Israeli forces, as part of a rally to commemorate Yasser Arafat’s life. At some point the youths began throwing stones at the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), and rolling burning tires towards the security personnel. The IDF responded by firing tear gas and live bullets.

In other clashes in the West Bank, live rounds injured at least six other Palestinians in the city of Tulkarem.

In total, “62 citizens were injured by live ammunition and rubber-coated bullets during clashes with the (Israeli) occupation in Tulkarem, Ramallah, Al-Bireh and Bethlehem,” the health ministry announced.

Intense battles raged in and around the Kweires airbase near Aleppo between government forces and Islamist militants, as the Syrian Army supported by the Russian Air Force managed to partially lift a blockade following a two-year Islamic State siege.

Gun battles as well as shelling can be seen in the incredible footage of the advance made by government forces. The dead bodies of Islamist terrorists are also visible across the battlefield.

As a result of the push by Syrian government troops, with the help of Russian airstrikes and local irregular forces, more than 900 militants were killed near the village of Telmam in Aleppo province. Intelligence regarding the locations of the terrorists’ positions around the base was partially provided by the Syrian opposition, the Russian Defense Ministry announced on Wednesday.

A spokesman for the Syrian Army and Armed Forces added that new progress in the war against Islamist militants was being made in the Latakia and Aleppo provinces. The Syrian Air Force carried out 75 sorties that destroyed 150 targets across the country.

In Aleppo province where the combat footage was filmed, the spokesman said that army units, aside from establishing control over Kweires airbase after “heavy fighting,” are now also in control of more than 250 square kilometers of the surrounding area.

US Senate resolution expresses support for Israel, slams Palestinian terror

WASHINGTON (JTA) — The U.S. Senate passed a resolution expressing support for Israel and condemning Palestinian terror attacks.

The resolution, which passed by unanimous consent on Tuesday, condemned in the “harshest terms possible” attacks that have left 11 Israelis dead and 145 wounded, and called on Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to stop incitement by Palestinian officials and media.

It further affirmed that the Senate “stands with the people of Israel during these difficult days” and supports the Jewish state’s right to self-defense, rejecting “any suggestion of the moral equivalence of Israeli security personnel” protecting its citizens and “terrorists intent to deliberately take innocent lives.”

Sens. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., and Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., introduced the resolution, which had 67 co-sponsors — 41 Republicans and 26 Democrats. Last week, the U.S. House of Representatives passed its own resolution condemning Palestinian terror.

In talk with progressives, Netanyahu suggests Israel could withdraw unilaterally

WASHINGTON (JTA) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel could hand over civilian control of territory to the Palestinians outside the framework of peace talks as a means of maintaining hope for the two-state solution.

Netanyahu, appearing Tuesday during his U.S. trip at a Democratic Party-aligned think tank in a bid to reach out to progressives, appeared to go further than he has until now in signaling what he would concede absent a peace agreement.

The prime minister was asked at the Center for American Progress briefing how he could best preserve the two-state solution now that the prospects for the resumption of talks are slim.

Israel protests EU labeling policy by quitting some talks

(JTA) — Israel’s Foreign Ministry suspended dialogue with the European Union to protest the EU’s decision to label products from West Bank settlements separately from goods made within Israel’s pre-1967 borders.

The ministry froze the dialogue on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on Wednesday, saying in a statement that it was pulling out of several EU forums, the Times of Israel reported.

“We have suspended the subcommittee on diplomacy, the subcommittee on human rights and international organizations,” the statement said. “The remaining dialogues [with the EU] are continuing as planned. Clearly, we won’t damage Israeli interests.”

The ministry’s political director, Alon Ushpiz, told EU Ambassador Lars Faaborg-Anderson that it was regrettable the EU’s move coincides with a wave of Palestinian terror attacks.
