Inside the Jewish life of Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland
(JTA) – Americans have heard a lot about Merrick Garland since President Barack Obama nominated him to fill the vacant seat on the Supreme Court.
But there’s a lot we still don’t know.
What are his views on abortion? Will the Republican leadership give him a hearing in the Senate? What was his bar mitzvah Torah portion?
Garland may have an extensive judicial record – he has more federal judicial experience (19 years) than any other Supreme Court nominee in history, according to the White House – but far less is known about Garland’s Jewish bona fides.

UAE plane crashes in southern Russia, 62 killed
A United Arab Emirates passenger plane has crashed during landing in the southern Russia, killing all 62 passengers and crew members on board.
Flydubai flight FZ981, en route from Dubai to the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don, is reported to have crashed due to poor visibility near the runway at 03:50 local time (0050 GMT) on Saturday.
“A Boeing 737 crashed as it was coming into land,” the TASS news agency quoted a spokesman from the local ministry as saying.
In a statement, the Investigative Committee of Russia confirmed the death of all 62 people aboard the plane.
“The aircraft hit the ground and broke into pieces,” the Committee said in a statement on its website. “According to preliminary data, there were 55 passengers aboard and 7 crew members. They all died.”
“At present, we are looking into two main theories for the plane crash in Rostov-on-Don: pilot error in connection with deteriorating weather conditions or a technical error,” Interfax news agency cited Oksana Kovrizhnaya, a representative of the Committee, as saying.

How Jewish groups plan to protest Trump at AIPAC
WASHINGTON (JTA) — Walk in wearing stickers. Stay out bearing placards. Get up and walk out when Trump walks in. Just don’t go. Go but don’t clap. Blame AIPAC. Don’t blame AIPAC.
And whatever you do, hit the Jewish texts.
Donald Trump’s scheduled appearance on Monday at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee’s annual Policy Conference has sparked a microcosmic Jewish version of the question now besetting much of the American polity: How do you solve a problem like the Donald?
The announcement last week that Trump — the billionaire real-estate developer who is the front-runner among Republican candidates and who has aimed broadsides at Mexicans and Muslims among other groups — will speak at AIPAC has sparked a flurry of debate on social media over whether his appearance is appropriate and whether it merits protest.

Trump’s Jewish lawyer: ‘Shame on’ protesting rabbis
WASHINGTON (JTA) — One of Donald Trump’s closest Jewish associates said rabbis who plan to protest the Republican front-runner’s speech at the upcoming AIPAC conference should be ashamed of themselves.
“Anyone who believes that @realDonaldTrump is a racist doesn’t know #Trump at all,” Michael Cohen, the Trump Organization’s executive vice president and Trump’s special counsel, said Thursday night on Twitter. “Shame on the protesting rabbis with #AIPAC.”
Several groups of rabbis — chief among them, the Reform movement’s rabbinical association — have said they plan to protest Trump’s speech Monday evening at the annual American Israel Public Affairs Committee policy conference.

Iraq forces close in on Daesh in Anbar’s Hit
Iraqi forces have recaptured more areas from the Daesh Takfiri group as they close in on militants holed up in the flashpoint western city of Hit in Anbar Province.
Led by the elite Counter-Terrorism Service, forces from the police, army and local tribal fighters managed to seize control of a bridge in the city of al-Baghdadi, located northwest of Hit along the Euphrates, local media said on Saturday.
Iraqi forces launched an offensive earlier in the day to retake Hit, a city located 145 kilometers (90 miles) west of the capital Baghdad, which was seized by Daesh in late 2014. The operation also aims to liberate Kubaysah, a smaller town east of Hit.
Iraq’s al-Summeriyah TV said pro-government forces recaptured a cement factory in Kubaysah on Saturday.
The recent advances come two days after Iraqi forces seized al-Muhammadi neighborhood of Hit on Thursday, hoisting the Iraqi flag on top of a government building in the area.

Turkish police nab over 1700 refugees after Ankara-EU deal
Turkish security forces have detained more than 1,700 refugees in the country’s Aegean coast in a massive operation shortly after a controversial deal was sealed between Ankara and the European Union to curb the massive exodus of asylum seekers into the continent.
According to a Turkish military statement, a total of 1,734 refugees and 16 smugglers were taken into custody at several locations near Turkey’s western coastal town of Dikili in the Izmir province on Friday. The operation involved coastguard, navy, police and was backed by helicopters.
The busted asylum seekers were all temporarily taken to a sports hall in the town to be questioned about their backgrounds and nationalities. According to local officials, they were trying to reach the Greek island of Lesbos, which lies directly across from Dikili.
Earlier in the day, an agreement was clinched in Brussels between Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu and the EU to curb the huge flow of asylum seekers to Europe. Under the pact, Ankara will be obliged to take back all illegal refugees deported from Greece while the EU will accept thousands of Syrian asylum seekers directly from Turkey.

Sanders: Absurd to suggest I should drop out of presidential race
(JTA) — Responding to reports that President Barack Obama called on Democrats to rally around Hillary Clinton as the likely nominee, Bernie Sanders said he would not drop out of the race.
Obama privately told a group of Democratic donors on March 11 that Sanders was nearing the point at which his campaign against Clinton would end, and that the party must soon come together to back Clinton, the New York Times reported Thursday.
“The bottom line is that when only half of the American people have participated in the political process … I think it is absurd for anybody to suggest that those people not have a right to cast a vote,” Sanders, who is Jewish, told MSNBC in an interview on Thursday.

Democracy, freedom and the rule of law have no value any longer, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said. He added that those who don’t support Ankara’ efforts to combat terrorists in the country are Turkey’s “enemies.”
“Democracy, freedom and the rule of law…For us, these words have absolutely no value any longer. Those who stand on our side in the fight against terrorism are our friend. Those on the opposite side are our enemy,” Erdogan told local leaders in Ankara on Wednesday, according to the DPA news agency.
Ankara is planning to deploy “an iron fist against terrorism” and “fight Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) militants” in the country’s south east Erdogan said.
Turkey views all Kurdish militia that are also spread widely throughout Syria and Iraq as a direct national threat. Erdogan repeated Turkey will strike Kurds everywhere.
“Wherever you run, our soldiers, police and village guards will find you there and do what is necessary,” the president said, referring to Kurdish militants.
