The possible discovery of a 1,000-year-old Viking site on a Canadian island could rewrite the story of the exploration of North America by Europeans before Christopher Columbus.

The unearthing of a stone used in iron working on Newfoundland, hundreds of miles south from the only known Viking site in North America, suggests the Vikings may have traveled much further into the continent than previously thought.

A group of archeologists has been excavating the newly discovered site at the Point Rosee, a narrow, windswept peninsula on the most western point of the island.

WASHINGTON (JTA) – The American Israel Public Affairs Committee dismissed as “weak” recent U.S. sanctions on Iran for testing ballistic missiles, a sign of continued tensions between the influential lobby and the Obama administration in the wake of the Iran nuclear deal.

“These limited sanctions are too weak to affect Iran’s behavior,” AIPAC said Monday of the new sanctions, which target an industrial group involved in manufacturing the missiles, the missile command of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps, and companies providing support to Mahan Air, which is affiliated with the Guards Corps.

“America must respond to Tehran’s recurring provocations with swift and meaningful penalties,” the prominent Israel lobby said.

(JTA) — A right-wing Knesset member was slammed for saying Arab and Jewish mothers in Israel’s maternity wards should be placed in separate rooms.

In a Twitter post Tuesday, Bezalel Smotrich of the Jewish Home party said, “It’s natural that my wife wouldn’t want to lie down [in a bed] next to a woman who just gave birth to a baby who might want to murder her baby twenty years from now.”

Smotrich added that “Arabs are my enemies and that’s why I don’t enjoy being next to them.”

An Italian reporter and her crew were assaulted by a passer-by as they broadcast a news report from a Brussels suburb that was used as a base by the Islamic State terrorists that plotted the November Paris attacks.

A video has been posted online showing journalist Giovanna Pancheri from Italian news company Sky TG24 and her cameraman being assaulted by a young man in the Brussels neighborhood of Molenbeek during a live broadcast on recent protests in the area.

The young man, who was wearing a grey hoodie and a black hat, is seen pushing the camera, apparently in an attempt to disrupt the filming. The woman stepped away in fear as she was trying to bring the report to an end.

Half a million asylum seekers have made it into Germany without being registered in any way, according to a Bild magazine report that cites the German Interior Ministry. On Wednesday the ministry is set to present an interim report on crimes committed by refugees in Germany.

Germany’s Interior Ministry does not know the whereabouts of about half a million migrants that entered the country as refugees, Bild newspaper has learnt. Refugees who come to Germany are obliged to register upon arrival, yet practically half of them do not do this.

“Many migrants do not register with the authorities for fear of being rejected,” Bild quoted its ministry source as saying.

German Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière will submit an interim assessment on migrants’ criminal activities to the Federal Cabinet on Wednesday. In mid-March, the head of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (Bamf), Frank-Jürgen Weise, said the German authorities would receive an accurate picture of who is staying as a refugee in the country.

Over the course of the last year, an estimated 1.1 million refugees arrived in Germany. Most of the asylum seekers have come from Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and the Balkan states.

Israel says Mideast arms proliferation imperils its military edge

As Gulf countries buy more and more Western weapons, and as sanctions relief begins to thaw the Iranian economy, Israel is concerned that its military’s qualitative edge in the region is being eroded. Israel’s neighbors are buying arms on a scale that threatens its regional military superiority, the deputy Israeli air force chief said on Sunday, in remarks that appeared aimed at helping secure more defense aid from a reluctant Washington.
US military payouts to Israel, currently around $3 billion annually, expire in 2018, and Israeli officials have spoken of needing around $4.5 billion. US officials have balked at such an increase. At the heart of the dispute is how to perpetuate Israel’s qualitative military edge – a guarantee that it gets more advanced US weapons than Arab states get. Israel says it needs to bulk up its armed forces, not just upgrade their technologies, to keep ahead of potential foes.

WASHINGTON (JTA) — Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders said Israel must improve relations with the Palestinians in order to maintain good relations with the United States.

Sanders, the Independent senator from Vermont who is mounting a strong challenge against Hillary Clinton, the front-runner in the Democratic race, also said the Palestinians must condemn terrorism and recognize Israel as a Jewish state.

Speaking this week with the New York Daily News editorial board ahead of the state’s April 19 primary, Sanders said Israeli behavior with the Palestinians would be linked to U.S. policy toward Israel.

Most Dutch against closer EU ties with Ukraine ahead of Wednesday referendum

The Dutch public will go to the polls on Wednesday to decide whether to back a European treaty which seeks to strengthen ties with Ukraine. However, polls show that the majority of those in the Netherlands are opposed to closer links with Kiev.

A poll carried out by Maurice de Hond on Sunday showed that 66 percent of those who say they will definitely vote will back the ‘No’ campaign, with only 25 percent supporting a ‘Yes’ vote, according to Reuters.

In order for the referendum to be considered valid, 30 percent of the Dutch population eligible to vote must cast their ballots. Pollsters TNS Nipo have forecast turnout of 32 percent.

“If Ukraine does become part of this member association, it is just one step closer to becoming part of the EU. What you get with the visa-free element of things is you are going to get people coming over here, which is going to put more stress on the Dutch economy and more handouts that are going to be paid,” activist Daniel Klop told RT.

In September, satirical news website GeenStijl collected over 450,000 signatures to force the Netherlands to hold a non-binding referendum concerning the EU’s planned association agreement with Kiev. Under Dutch law, any petition that gains more than 300,000 is enough to trigger such a vote.

“Have you ever been asked what you think of such an expansion of the EU?” asked the website at the time, noting this is one of the major gripes amongst the Dutch population. The public believes the Dutch state should consult them on any further discussions concerning the EU.

Following a meeting with US President Obama, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg lauded the block’s “biggest reinforcement since Cold War,” promising European members will step up defense spending, while listing an “assertive Russia” among the alliance’s chief threats.

While never mentioning the maker of the latest “obsolete NATO” remarks by name, on Monday both Barack Obama and Stoltenberg did their utmost to dismiss Donald Trump’s recent statements and defend the Cold War-era block’s supposedly crucial role in assuring the allies’ security.

Obama described NATO as “a linchpin, a cornerstone of US security policy,” while Stoltenberg said it was “important as ever,” while ramming home the story that NATO “has been able to adapt” to a “more dangerous world.” The comments were made after a bilateral meeting in Washington, DC scheduled to mark the 67th anniversary of NATO – the first such high-level talks since the Paris and Brussels attacks.

“Together, we are now implementing the biggest reinforcement through our collective defense since the end of the Cold War,” Stoltenberg said.

Meet the ‘intensely neurotic’ Jew saving the world’s refugees

NEW YORK (JTA) — John Oliver was in the audience Monday night for the awarding of The Charles Bronfman Prize, and here’s the crazy thing – he may not have been the coolest or even funniest person in the room.

That’s because the honoree at the Manhattan ceremony was Rebecca Heller, the director and co-founder of the International Refugee Assistance Project, which wrangles law students and pro bono attorneys to provide legal assistance to refugees.

The Charles Bronfman Prize, established in honor of the philanthropist by his children, honors Jews under 50 who distinguish themselves in humanitarian work. As Rosalie Silberman Abella, justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, put it in her introductory remarks, Heller represents the “alchemy of passion, fearlessness, resoluteness, entrepreneurship … and feistiness” shared by previous prizewinners.

Heller was at Yale Law School when she travelled to Israel in 2008. In neighboring Jordan, she met with refugees from Iraq and realized in order to navigate a “deeply entrenched” and patchwork system of resettlement, they needed – what else — a good lawyer. The student organization she founded upon her return became IRAP, which has provided legal assistance to more than 10,000 refugees and claims an 85 percent success rate with resettlement. (Oliver featured an IRAP client, an Afghani translator stranded after assisting U.S. forces, on his HBO show “Last Week Tonight.”)

WASHINGTON (JTA) – The New York Observer said its editor would no longer consult with the campaign of Donald Trump, whose son-in-law, Jared Kushner, owns the weekly.

The statement Tuesday, reported Monday by the Huffington Post, came a day after a New York magazine profile of the front-runner in the race for the Republican presidential nod said that Observer editor Ken Kurson had assisted Kushner in writing Trump’s speech last month to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.

“A recent report about Observer Editor Ken Kurson’s input on a speech delivered by Donald Trump before AIPAC has resulted in new scrutiny of our newspaper’s relationship with Mr. Trump, who is the father-in-law of our publisher, Jared Kushner,” the newspaper’s political editor, Jill Jorgensen, said in the statement. “Going forward, there will be no input whatsoever on the campaign from Mr. Kurson or anyone on the editorial side of the Observer.”

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Donald Trump’s speech to America’s largest pro-Israel lobby did not help his standing among Israelis, a new poll shows.

The March Peace Index, a monthly poll of Israeli attitudes by the Israel Democracy Institute think tank, showed that 40 percent of Israeli Jews thought Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton would be “better for Israel,” versus 30 percent for Trump, the Republican front-runner.

In addition, 43 percent of Israeli Jews feel Clinton would better serve American interests, as opposed to 24 percent for Trump.
