Egypt has demolished nearly 1,430 underground tunnels between the country and the besieged Gaza Strip over the past 18 months, the Egyptian military says.

A total of 1,429 border tunnels, used by the Palestinian people in Gaza to bring in supplies to the besieged strip, were destroyed over the period.

The Egyptian army claimed on Sunday that the tunnels were “used by terrorists and criminals” to smuggle weapons to militants in the Sinai Peninsula.

However, a report by the World Food Program (WFP) in February 2014 revealed that the tunnels represented “the main supply and commercial trade route for goods into Gaza” since 2007.

The WFP report added that the “closure of the tunnels by Egypt in July 2013 hampers the few remaining drivers of economic growth in the Gaza strip.”

A young Palestinian man, who was shot by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank and hit with a military vehicle, was left under the car for three hours before Israeli forces allowed access to him, an eyewitness says.

Abdullah Iyad Ghuneimat was killed on Sunday in Kufr Malik Village near Ramallah, with the Israeli army claiming that the 22-year-old threw a firebomb at the Israeli jeep, causing it to swerve and hit him.

The military claims that Israeli forces later tried to help the man, but he had already succumbed to his injuries.

However, Nabil Abd al-Karim, an eyewitness, recounted a different story of the incident.

Tel Aviv seeks to prevent the release of the findings of a UN investigation into Israeli war crimes against Palestinians in Gaza, with the prime minister of the regime labeling such a move as a “waste of time.”

Addressing Israeli ministers on Sunday, Benjamin Netanyahu claimed that “whoever wants a baseless automatic accusation against Israel can waste their time reading the UN report.”

The UN Human Rights Council (HRC) is due later in June to publish the findings of the probe into Tel Aviv’s war crimes during the latest Israeli military aggression against the blockaded Gaza Strip in the summer of 2014.

The remarks by Netanyahu signal Tel Aviv’s attempt to preempt the release of the findings, which was postponed in March.

The Israeli premier also blamed the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas for civilian casualties in the Gaza war.

Strident opponent of Israel running for London mayor

(JTA) — George Galloway, a former British lawmaker who declared his district “an Israel-free zone,” said he will be a candidate for London mayor.

Galloway announced his bid on Sunday night, saying he would run in the election in May to “build a city that benefits everyone, not just those dripping in gold.”

Following the announcement, The Guardian of London reported that he said, “I’m running because I want to represent every piece of the mosaic of this city which I have called home for 35 years.”

Galloway, the leader of the tiny Respect Party known for his strident anti-Israel rhetoric, lost his Parliament seat representing Bradford, in northern England, by a large margin in the May national elections. Declaring his district an Israel-free zone last year included barring Israeli  goods, services, academics and tourists.

Spanish Jews demand alderman’s dismissal over Holocaust joke

(JTA) — Spanish Jews demanded the dismissal of Madrid’s alderman for culture because he posted a joke about the Holocaust on Twitter in 2011.

Guillermo Zapata assumed his post last week after his left-wing party won in municipal elections in May.

Four years ago he tweeted, “How do you fit five million Jews into a 600? In the ashtray.”

The figure 600 is a reference to the SEAT 600, an iconic Spain-made 1970s urban automobile that weighed less than 600 kilograms, or 1,200 pounds. Bodies of murdered Jews and other victims of Nazism were regularly burned to ash in crematoria that the Nazis set up in extermination camps across Europe.

Netanyahu on BDS: Attacks on Jews always preceded by slander of Jews

In apparent reference to Nazi persecution of the Jews, prime minister tells Polish FM that Israel will not tolerate efforts to isolate it internationally.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hinted Monday at a parallel between calls for a boycott of Israel and the actions of the Nazis against the Jews during the Holocaust.

During a meeting with Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs Grzegorz  Schetyna, Netanyahu alluded to the Nazi persecution of the Jews of Poland, saying: “Attacks against Jews have always been preceded by the slander of Jews.”

Israel steps up social media fight with satire on Gaza under Hamas

Animated video shows foreign journalist taken in by Hamas propaganda, until he dons a pair of glasses to see the reality.

Less than 24 hours after releasing its own preemptive report into IDF activity during last year’s Gaza conflict, Israel is keeping up its public advocacy campaign on social media. The Prime Minister’s Facebook and Twitter accounts have uploaded infographics highlighting the key findings in the report, and the Foreign Ministry has even decided to take things one step further, with a satirical piece of animation entitled “Open your eyes to what is happening in Gaza.”

The short video shows a foreign correspondent being interviewed on his perspective on life in the Gaza Strip, while the reality of the situation unfolds behind him.
