Moscow has called an urgent UN Security Council meeting after US-led coalition hit Syrian forces, killing 62 soldiers and wounding 100 more. The Russian FM spokeswoman blasted Washington over the indiscriminate airstrike that she said serves the interests of ISIS terrorists.

“If previously we had suspicions that Al-Nusra Front is protected this way, now, after today’s airstrikes on the Syrian army we come to a really terrifying conclusion for the entire world: The White House is defending IS [Islamic State, formerly ISIS/ISIL],” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told Rossiya 24.

“We demand a full and detailed explanation from Washington. That explanation must be given at the UN Security Council,” Zakharova added.

The Foreign Ministry has demanded full and detailed explanation from Washington over the incident in Deir ez-Zor, in which 62 Syrian troops were killed and over 100 injured.

BERLIN (JTA) — In what one German Jewish leader is calling a “Nazi renaissance,” Germany’s newest right-populist party — Alternative for Germany — has broken the Berlin barrier, gaining seats for the first time in that state’s parliament.

The anti-immigrant, Euro-sceptic party, which has been plagued by controversies over anti-Semitism in its ranks, finished fifth in Sunday’s vote with 14.1 percent. AfD, as the party is known, now has seats on legislatures in 10 states following several elections this year. The party was founded in 2013.

Winning the Berlin election was the Social Democratic Party, which retained power over the party of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the Christian Democratic Union, with 21.6 percent of the vote to 17.5 percent.

More than a quarter of French Muslims, mostly aged under 25, support an ultra-conservative form of Islam, including the wearing of the full-face veil, a new survey shows. The majority of people who identify as Muslim support strict French secular laws, however.

The survey of 1,029 people was commissioned by Ifop, and carried out by a liberal think tank, Institut Montaigne.

At least 60 percent of the respondents said girls should be allowed to wear the headscarf in school and college, the survey published exclusively in Le Journal du Dimanche (LJD) weekly found.

Twelve years after headscarves and other religious symbols were forbidden in classrooms, the ban no longer seems to convince Muslims in France, the LJD reported.

Ankara may continue its operation against Islamic State deeper into Syria – to within just 50km of Aleppo, as President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says the Turkish military plans to create a 5,000-sq-km safe zone within the country. TrendsIslamic State, Syria unrest, Syria-Turkey

Erdogan says Turkey’s operation in Syria, Euphrates Shield, which started on August 24, has cleared border regions from Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).

“As part of the Euphrates Shield operation, an area of 900 sq km has been cleared of terror so far. This area is pushing south,” Erdogan said, as cited by Reuters.

However, the Turkish president wants to increase the area of this safe zone, which is also aimed at stopping the advance of Syrian Kurdish forces. “We may extend this area to 5,000 sq km as part of a safe zone,” he added.

President Erdogan also stated that the Turkish military would continue its push further into Syria and its troops would look to capture the IS-held town of Al-Bab, which is some 50km north-east of Aleppo.

Syrian and Russian jets have attacked Daesh positions in Dayr al-Zawr following a US bombing which killed 62 government troops in the eastern town and allowed the Takfiri group to make gains.

Lebanon-based al-Mayadeen TV said the attacks on Monday wiped out several Daesh positions and inflicted heavy losses. Two arms depots and several oil tankers of the Takfiri group were destroyed in the airstrikes.

Daesh controls large parts of Dayr al-Zawr city as well as most of the province for which it is the capital. The terrorist group chiefly relies on oil fields in the province to fund its atrocious war in Syria.

The Syrian army has been fighting it out against Daesh for the control of a key military airbase there. Syrian troops came under heavy US aerial bombardment on Saturday, which Damascus says was premeditated.

Dayr al-Zawr has been effectively under a Takfiri siege since early 2015 but the terrorists have suffered major setbacks over the past few months during which the Syrian army has liberated several areas.

On Sunday, a senior adviser to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said Damascus believed the US airstrike in Dayr al-Zawr was “intentional.”

“None of the facts on the ground show that what happened was a mistake or a coincidence,” Buthaina Shaaban told AFP.

Israeli military aircraft have carried out three air strikes against areas in the Gaza Strip in yet another act of aggression across the region.

The first airstrike struck an open area northwest of Beit Lahia city in the early hours of Thursday morning, Arabic-language Safa news agency reported.

The second attack targeted the Shima’a area northwest of Beit Lahia, causing a fire. The third attack hit eastern Shuja’iyya neighborhood of Gaza City.

There were no immediate reports about the possible casualties.

The airstrikes came hours after Tel Aviv claimed that a mortar shell fired from the coastal enclave had hit an open terrain in the Eshkol regional council. The projectile reportedly did not cause any damage.

The Israeli military frequently bombs the Gaza Strip. The disproportionate force is always used in violation of international law, and civilians are often killed or injured.

Manhattan bombing suspect captured

Law enforcement have captured wanted Manhattan bombing suspect Ahmad Khan Rahami. In a reversal of earlier statements, NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio says, ‘The more we learn with each passing hour is it looks more like terrorism.’
An Afghan immigrant wanted for questioning in the bombings that rocked a New York City neighborhood and a New Jersey shore town was captured Monday after being wounded in a shootout with police that erupted when he was discovered asleep in the doorway of a New Jersey bar, authorities said.

Russian ultranationalist politician with Jewish roots praises Trump

(JTA) — Vladimir Zhirinovsky, a Russian ultranationalist who has made anti-Semitic statements despite having Jewish roots, praised Donald Trump and said the two shared a “closeness.”

Zhirinovsky, whose father died in an accident after immigrating to Israel, offered the U.S. Republican presidential candidate praise during a recent news conference in Moscow, The Times of Moscow weekly reported last week.

“I feel a certain sympathy toward Donald Trump, his manner, his position,” Zhirinovsky, 70, told reporters. “He’s close to me in a way, he speaks freely and reacts instantly.”

Known for making racist and inflammatory statements – in 1996 Zhirinovsky said Russia and the United States should deport their Jews in order “to survive,” and in 2008 he suggested dropping nuclear bombs in the Atlantic Ocean to flood the United Kingdom — Zhirinovsky and his Liberal Democratic Party enjoy considerable popularity in Russia, where he finished fourth in the 2012 presidential election and third in the 1991 vote.

(JTA) — Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump lauded Israel for its success in using racial profiling to prevent terror attacks.

In a phone interview Monday with “Fox & Friends,” the network’s morning show, Trump said that U.S. police are afraid to consider religion or ethnicity when identifying suspects as potential terrorists.

“Our police are amazing. Our local police, they know who a lot of these people are,” Trump said in the interview. “They’re afraid to do anything about it because they don’t want to be accused of profiling and they don’t want to be accused of all sorts of things.

The leader of the anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany party, Frauke Petry, has launched a personal attack on German Chancellor Angela Merkel, alleging she is a worse politician because she does not have her own children.

Petry blamed Merkel’s childlessness for the chancellor’s political failures. “I have four children and Merkel has none,” the AFD’s Petry told Germany’s Stern daily in an interview on Wednesday. “Children help people to see beyond their own lifespan and that is exactly what Merkel does not do,” she added, implying that the chancellor is pursuing policies as if there were no tomorrow.

The Tel Aviv regime has expanded its settlement activities in the occupied territories during the presidency of Barack Obama, Israeli data show.

According to the figures, which were released by Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics this week, over 12,288 new settlement units were launched during Obama’s term from 2009 up to June 30, 2016, the Associated Press reported.

The most recent figures showed that in the first half of 2016 alone, work began on 1,195 settlement units.

Based on that pace of construction, the number could well exceed 13,000 housing units by the time Obama leaves office, according to the report.

The surge comes despite Obama’s repeated criticism of Israel for its settlement expansion.

Hanan Ashrawi, member of the executive committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), said she was “not surprised at all” by the figures, dismissing the US criticism as mere lip service.

“They did nothing to stop it. On the contrary, they looked the other way,” she said.

(JTA) — New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio called an explosion in Manhattan that injured at least 29 people “intentional,” but said there was no proof of terrorism.

One of the casualties of the Saturday night blast in the New York City borough was critically injured. A pregnant woman and a couple driving by in a car were among those hurt, according to reports. The explosion blew out windows in the Chelsea neighborhood and caused two nearby buildings to be evacuated.

Hours later, a second device, believed to be a bomb made from a pressure cooker, was found about four blocks away from the initial blast.

US Secretary of State John Kerry has said Washington “acknowledges and regrets” the fatal airstrike on Syrian government troops by coalition jets, but blamed Syrian President Assad for “bombing people indiscriminately” and blocking the delivery of humanitarian aid.

In an interview with CNN, Kerry urged Russia to pressure Syrian leader Assad, whom he called “a spoiler [who] doesn’t want a ceasefire.”

“The biggest judgment they [Russia] need to make is to stop Assad from bombing people indiscriminately, which he continues to do,” the US secretary of state said.

“To allow Assad – who is a spoiler; he doesn’t want a ceasefire – to allow him to continue to go after opposition, pretending that they are Nusra, is in and of itself a huge challenge to this effort [to observe the ceasefire],” Kerry said.

French blogger lashes out at YouTube for trying to ‘censor’ her interview with Juncker

A French video blogger who interviewed European Commission head Jean-Claude Juncker has exposed a video in which a YouTube representative tries to censor her “super tough” questions. The embarrassing scene was caught on hidden camera.

“You don’t want to get on the wrong side of YouTube and the European Commission, or of the people who trust you. Except if you don’t care about having a long career on YouTube,” a YouTube employee tells Birbes, adding that he would have to discuss potential “red-flag” questions with Juncker’s spokesperson, Natasha Bertaud.

“At the beginning, I realized that YouTube was trying to gently influence me,” Birbes said in her video statement on Facebook. “Then eventually it got more serious, and at some point I felt threatened.”

YouTube wanted the conversation with Juncker to be a politics-free chat, nothing to write home about. “They wanted me to ask super soft questions. The goal was to give advertisement to Juncker.”

“They suggested I ask Juncker ‘What is happiness?’ [and] discuss his vintage Nokia phone and his dog named ‘Plato,’” Birbes told French news website Rue 89.

The French blogger, who is the host of the YouTube channel ‘Le Corps, la Maison, l’Esprit’ (The Body, the Home, the Spirit), with over 64,000 subscribers, said she was pressed to make a tough choice.

“What was difficult for me is that I felt a ball in my stomach when I talked to the YouTube guy,” she recalled.

“Clearly, I had to decide: Take the risk and lose everything I’ve succeeded in so far in order to ask the questions [that I chose], or stay within the system and ask the questions suggested by YouTube. I decided to run the risk. I wanted to be honest with myself and with all those people who trust me,” the blogger said in her video.

70% of Japanese under 34yo single, over 40% still virgins – national survey

Nearly half of Japanese adults do not start having sex until after they reach 34 years of age, as the majority of young adults remain single in the country, where the population has fallen by nearly 1 million in the past five years.

The study, conducted by the National Institute of Population and Social Security Research, revealed that 42 percent of the men and 44.2 percent of the women aged 18 to 34 are still virgins in Japan.

The trend in society seems to have deteriorated since the last study came out in 2010. At the start of the decade, only 36.2 percent of men and 38.7 percent of women said they had never had sex.
