US Holocaust Museum: Don’t turn away Syrian refugees

WASHINGTON (JTA) — The United States should not turn its back on Syrian refugees, the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum said.

“Acutely aware of the consequences to Jews who were unable to flee Nazism, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum looks with concern upon the current refugee crisis,” the museum said in a statement on Thursday.

“While recognizing that security concerns must be fully addressed, we should not turn our backs on the thousands of legitimate refugees. The Museum calls on public figures and citizens to avoid condemning today’s refugees as a group. It is important to remember that many are fleeing because they have been targeted by the Assad regime and ISIS for persecution and in some cases elimination on the basis of their identity.”

The museum routinely pronounces on threatened populations; most recently it described the Islamic State as committing genocide against minorities.

(JTA) — Three Jewish groups expressed outrage and concern about Donald Trump’s claim that he would create a database to track all American Muslims if he were elected president.

“Donald Trump’s suggestion that we use a database to track Muslims is deeply troubling and reminiscent of darker days in American history when others were singled out for scapegoating,” the Anti-Defamation League said in a statement Friday.

“Such a proposal is not only inimical to our cherished civil liberties, but it also wildly misses the goal of finding a rational balance between civil liberties and the security measures necessary to protect those liberties.”

Police in Sweden have arrested a man who is accused of preparing terror attacks on the Swedish capital, a day after Sweden had raised the terror threat level because of the attacks in Paris.

Iraqi national Mutar Muthanna Majid, 22, was detained late Thursday during a police raid on a center for asylum-seekers in the city of Bolinden, in northeastern Sweden. On Friday he was interrogated by Swedish authorities.

“The arrest took place in a calm manner and an interrogation of the person is planned,” the Swedish Security Service (Sapo) said in a statement on Thursday as cited by The Local. It later reported that Majid was a member of the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) terror group, and suspected of having fought in Syria.

Swedish Defense Minister Peter Hultqvist said the authorities are hunting for more suspects but did not go into further details.

His fingerprints were taken on October 3 while he was travelling through Greece, Francois Molins said in a statement on Friday.

Counter-intelligence and police sources had told Reuters earlier that the first suicide bomber to be determined as arriving in France from Greece, who blew himself up at Gate D, may have had an accomplice as he was traveling through the Balkans to Western Europe.

That terrorist was identified from a Syrian passport near his body as Ahmad al-Mohammad. However, it remains unclear whether the document actually belonged to the man whose body was found next to the stadium or had been stolen.

No political transition in Syria until terrorists are destroyed – Assad

Published time: 19 Nov, 2015 22:25

© Stringer © Stringer / Reuters Syrian President Bashar Assad has said that the internationally agreed upon 18-month timeline for political transition in Syria may only begin after Islamic State and other terror groups are defeated in the country.

“There will be no point in deciding any timetable, because you cannot achieve anything politically while you have the terrorists taking over many areas in Syria, and they’re going to be – they are already – the main obstacle of any real political advancement,” Assad said in an interview with Italy’s RAI UNO channel.

After the terrorists are defeated, the political transition in Syria won’t require a lot of time, the president stressed.

“One year and a half (18 months) to two years is enough for any transition. It’s enough. I mean if you want to talk about first of all having a new constitution, then a referendum, then parliamentarian elections, then any kind of other procedure, whether presidential or any other thing, doesn’t matter,” he explained.

Pollard lawyers appeal ‘illegal’ terms of release

Former spy’s attorneys went to work soon after his release, filing an appeal with a US District Court in an attempt to overturn strict monitoring conditions placed on him as part of his parole.

Mere hours after his release on Friday, Jonathan Pollard’s lawyers appealed what they termed illegal restrictions placed on the Israeli spy, including an ankle bracelet with 24 hour GPS monitoring, and tracking of his and his employer’s computer systems.
As part of his parole, Pollard must remain in the United States for five years, although his lawyers have asked President Barack Obama to commute his sentence, allowing him to go to Israel immediately.

Though confined to NY, Jonathan Pollard can explore the Internet for the first time

A filing by the convicted spy for Israel’s lawyers reveal that they won a single concession from the U.S. government in months of wrangling over his parole conditions: Pollard, who will be employed by an investment firm, may access the internet without prior permission.

The filing in the U.S. District Court in Manhattan Friday morning, just hours after Pollard’s release from a federal prison in North Carolina 30 years into his life sentence, was for habeas corpus. Pollard’s lawyers, Eliot Lauer and Jacques Semmelman, argued that the restrictions attached to Pollard amounted to illegal detention and were “statutorily and constitutionally impermissible.”

The revelations in the contentious filing, along with statements Friday by the White House, supportive Jews and Jewish groups and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, bury for now any hope Pollard’s release would end three decades of pronounced disagreement between the United States and Israel over what Pollard represents and whether his punishment was just.

Knesset Pollard caucus promises to fight parole restrictions

(JTA) — The head of the Knesset caucus dedicated to Jonathan Pollard promised to fight restrictions on the freed spy’s movements.

“Jonathan, the caucus will not cease its activity until we remove the limitations imposed on you upon your release,” lawmaker Nahman Shai wrote in a letter to Pollard on Friday, according to the Times of Israel. “We continue to demand the removal of any restriction on your freedom of movement, communication or other violation of your rights.”

Pollard was freed from a federal penitentiary on Friday after serving 30 years in prison for passing military secrets to Israel. As a condition of his parole, Pollard is barred from leaving the United States for up to five years.

Family of Paris attacker: ‘We are not anti-Semitic’

(JTA) — The family of one of the Paris attackers said they are not anti-Semitic.

The mother and brother of Omar Ismaïl Mostefaï, one of the terrorists who shot up the Bataclan theater, called his actions “inexcusable” and “monstrous” through tears on the widely watched French television channel Canal Plus on Wednesday night.

Mostefaï’s brother, whose face and name were not shown for security reasons, also said that on the night of the attacks, he and his wife attended a show by Dieudonne M’bala M’bala, the French comic who has multiple convictions for inciting racial hatred against Jews.

“We were at a Dieudonne show Friday night, but we are not anti-Semites,” Mostefaï’s brother said.

State Dept. ‘disappointed’ Israeli cop who beat American teen got no jail time

(JTA) — A State Department spokesperson criticized an Israeli court for failing to jail a police officer caught on video beating a Palestinian-American teenager.

John Kirby told reporters Thursday that the United States is “disappointed” by the decision to sentence the officer to community service in connection with the beating of Tariq Abu Khdeir in 2014.

“Given the clear evidence captured on videotape of the excessive use of force, it is difficult to see how this sentence would promote full accountability for the actions of the police officer in this case,” Kirby said.

According to the Malaysiakini online news daily, Khalid has confirmed a leaked police circular on a meeting between members of Abu Sayyaf, a Philippines-based terrorist group, and Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL). The circular allegedly reports that IS have dispatched suicide bombers to Sabah (one of two Malaysian states on the island of Borneo) and Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia’s capital and most populous city).

“There have been reports of imminent terrorist threats in Malaysia,” the police chief said in a press statement. “At this point, I would like to underline that they have yet to be confirmed,” he added.
