UK Jewish lawmaker blasted for ‘Jewish money’ quote

(JTA) — Two British groups condemned a Jewish lawmaker who reportedly said that Jewish money dictates government policy on Israel.

Gerald Kaufman, a lawmaker for Labour who has called for applying international sanctions against Israel for its treatment of Palestinians, reportedly made the statement at a meeting in London on Tuesday organized by the Palestine Return Council. Kaufman attended along with several other lawmakers and the blogger David Collier, who has posted an account of Kaufman’s speech.

“It’s Jewish money, Jewish donations, to the conservative party as in the general election in May, support from The Jewish Chronicle, all of those things,” Kaufman is quoted as saying. “There is now a big group of conservative members of Parliament, who are pro-Israel whatever government does and they are not interested in what Israel, in what the Israeli government does.”

Yaalon: US-Israel disputes about Iran deal are over

(JTA) — Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon acknowledged that disputes between Israel and the U.S. over the Iran nuclear deal are over.

“The Iran deal is a given,” Yaalon said at a news conference in Washington on Wednesday with his U.S. counterpart, Ash Carter. “Our disputes are over. And now we have to look to the future.”

Carter said the deal completed in July between Iran and six world powers removes Iran’s nuclear threat, calling it “just one source of uncertainty and risk.” He added that Iran must comply with the deal or face a military threat from the United States, the Defense Department’s Defense News reported.

Ben Carson is a Seventh-day Adventist. Here’s why it matters

NEW YORK (JTA) – When Joe Lieberman became the first observant Jew with a reasonable chance at being president – after Al Gore named him his vice presidential running mate in 2000 – he faced a host of questions about how his Sabbath observance might impact his presidential duties.

Now that Ben Carson, a Seventh-day Adventist, has emerged at the top of the polls in the Republican presidential primary, he’s facing similar questions about his religion.

So far, Carson’s faith — which, like Judaism, celebrates the Sabbath on Saturday and abjures eating the non-kosher animals listed in the Book of Leviticus — hasn’t been an impediment to his campaign.

Israeli forces have killed two more Palestinians in the occupied West Bank in a pattern of shootings that has claimed scores of lives so far this month.

The Palestinian, whose age and identity has not been revealed yet, was shot dead near the city of al-Khalil (Hebron) on Thursday after allegedly trying to stab a soldier, Israeli media said.

The Israeli soldier was reportedly lightly injured in the attack. Witnesses said Israeli troops shot the Palestinian in the shoulder and head several times.

Later, Israeli troops gunned down another Palestinian whom the military claimed had attempted to stab an Israeli soldier. But a Palestinian witness at the scene, community activist Issa Amro, dismissed the Israeli account, saying he had not seen a knife.

َAccording to the Palestinian Health Ministry, the latest deaths bring to 67 the total number of Palestinians killed since the beginning of this month. Some 7,100 others have been injured.

Over the weekend, three Eritrean asylum seekers, aged between 21 and 27, were arrested in Hjørring for raping a 25-year-old woman from Eritrea, Eastern Africa. “I can confirm that all those arrested and injured, are asylum seekers from Eritrea,” Police Commissioner Peter Skovbak told Metroxpress.

Between 2003 and 2014, over 34 percent of all individuals convicted of rape (212 out of 615) were immigrants or their descendants, according to the newspaper. At least five asylum seekers were reportedly charged with rape last year.

A parliamentary majority supports the idea for Danish language courses to include lessons on sexual morality, according to the paper. Several parties point to the success of a similar program in Norway, where asylum seekers are given a five-hour course designed to prevent sexual assaults. Among other things, the class, launched in 2011, reportedly teaches that a kiss is not an invitation to sex.

Over 80% of asylum seekers in Germany unqualified – report

Published time: 29 Oct, 2015 11:57

© Michaela Rehle Over 80 percent of the asylum seekers recently arrived in Germany have no formal qualifications, and only eight percent have a college degree, local media reported citing research by the country’s Federal Employment Agency.

Germany (population 80 million) may receive 1.5 million asylum seekers this year alone. It has already accepted more asylum applications than any other European nation, with a number of critics pointing to a high number of uneducated and illiterate people coming to the country.

The Federal Employment Agency has stated that 81 percent of asylum seekers are “without formal qualifications,” the Junge Freiheit daily reported, citing a nine-page report entitled “Refugees in Germany: Take responsibility, identify opportunities.”

The agency has reportedly calculated that due to the looming asylum crisis there will be at least 400,000 additional welfare recipients in the coming year.

Earlier this year, about 60 German universities offered refugees a chance to attend courses as guest students for free. In the past, asylum seekers had to pay a fee, unaffordable for most of them.

Turkey threatens ‘whatever necessary’ to combat Kurdish autonomy ‘mindset’ in Syria

Published time: 29 Oct, 2015 04:25

© Rodi Said Threatening continued assaults on the Kurdish militia in Syria, the Turkish president has warned he will not request anyone’s permission to do whatever is necessary to prevent the spread of support for Kurdish autonomy, even if it requires bombing US-allied rebels.

In a clear message to dissuade Kurds from supporting the self-declared autonomous town of Tel Abyad near the Turkish border, President Tayyip Erdogan said that he will “do what is necessary,” including using force, to eradicate the potential source of separatism along its borders.

Tel Abyad, on the border with Turkey, was captured in June from Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) by Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) fighters with the help of American-led air strikes. Last week, a local council led by the Democratic Union Party (PYD) declared it part of the system of autonomous self-government established by the Kurds. Since the conflict in Syria broke out in 2011, Syrian Kurds have declared three autonomous zones, called “cantons,” across northern Syria, but deny that they are aiming to establish their own state.

Alarmed by Kurdish territorial gains, Turkey fears that the latest creation of autonomous Tel Abyad canton could stir separatism among its own Kurdish minority. YPG has been a key ally of the US in the fight against Islamic State in Syria, but Erdogan’s message sends out a clear sign that Turkey’s national interests supersedes those of the United States and NATO.

Iraq ‘didn’t ask’ for US ground operations against ISIS

Published time: 29 Oct, 2015 02:20

The Iraqi government never asked for and does not need any US involvement in ground operations against Islamic State terrorists. The eye-opening statement came only a day after the Pentagon promised its partner more ground support if it was required.

“This is an Iraqi affair and the government did not ask the US Department of Defense to be involved in direct operations,” spokesman Sa’ad al-Hadithi told NBC News. “We have enough soldiers on the ground.”

Hadithi made it clear that any involvement of US forces that stretches beyond their “train and advise” mission must be cleared with Baghdad – as mandated under international law.

Thus far Iraq has only cleared a US air campaign over its territory against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL). For now, Hadithi stressed, Iraq only needs US support in “arming and training [Iraqi] forces.” Around 3,300 US troops are involved in the mission in Iraq.

“But lots of our officers joined Islamic State because of ideology,” Hussam Alawak, a commander of the Free Syrian army, told RT. He added that some extremists from the Islamic State’s (IS, formerly known as ISIS/ISIL) branch in Iraq come to FSA centers and “cause trouble for them.”

“They [IS] took lots of people from our army to achieve their goals of expansion, to control oil regions in Syria. They attacked us with very dense fire in the Al-Bab region [Aleppo province, northern Syria], so we had to tactically retreat to other places.”

IDF to impose separation of Jews, Palestinians in Gush Etzion

Soldiers to keep Palestinians at physical distance from the Jewish population following military assessment that attacks in the West Bank’s Gush Etzion area will continue.

Near total segregation between Israeli Jews and Palestinians is set to be enforced by the IDF in the Gush Etzion region of the West Bank, according to a recently-written open letter from head of the regional council Davidi Perel to local residents.
“Unfortunately we do not see an end nearby to the situation, nor a decrease in the motivation of terrorists to carry out attacks,” the letter said. Accordingly, Perel wrote, the IDF has decided that soldiers stationed at the Gush Etzion junction will, as far as possible, keep Palestinians away from the Jewish population.

Russia has reportedly been delivering Iranian weapons to Syria’s embattled regime on a daily basis. Over the past 10 days, shipments in Russian cargo planes have taken place twice daily, the Fox News network reported Thursday, citing Western intelligence sources.

The shipments are part of a broad Russian-Iranian-Syrian alliance forged in recent months by a senior Iranian general, Al-Quds Force commander Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani. Soleimani is said to be coordinating the Russian-Iranian supply effort.

The planes are operating out of Russia’s newly expanded operating base in the Syrian coastal city of Latakia, and were spotted by intelligence agencies on the tarmac at the base.

According to the report, “the flights are not registered, and are in breach of two United Nations Security Council resolutions which impose an arms embargo on Iran.”

Along with the weapons, Iran is shipping troops into Syria to aid embattled Syrian strongman Bashar Assad — these too are arriving via the Russian base in Latakia.

Dutch soccer fans fly anti-Semitic banner during match

AMSTERDAM (JTA) — A Dutch soccer club said it was working to identify fans who held up a sign during a recent match with the initials of the phrase “Jews have cancer.”

The Vitesse club from Arnhem told the Gelderlander daily that it would have intervened to stop or punish the fans from holding up the sign on Sunday. “We unfortunately did not discover the sign until after the game,” said Paul Koster, the club chairman.

The sign was directed at fans and players of the Ajax club, who are often called Jews because of the historical Jewish presence in Amsterdam. Ajax fans also sometimes refer to themselves as Jews, though the team’s management and an anti-discrimination group discourage this behavior because they say it invites further abuse and hate speech.

In April, dozens of fans of a soccer team from Utrecht were filmed chanting during a match versus Ajax: “My father was in the commandos, my mother was in the SS, together they burned Jews cause Jews burn the best.” They also chanted: “Hamas, Hamas, Jews to the gas.”

Kerry: U.S. ready to do what it can toward two-state solution

(JTA) — U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry called a two-state solution “the only viable alternative” for Israelis and Palestinians.

“The current situation is simply not sustainable,” Kerry said in an address Wednesday at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington.

“A two-state solution with strong security protections remains the only viable alternative,” Kerry asserted. “And for anybody who thinks otherwise you can measure what unitary looks like by just looking at what’s been going on in the last  few weeks.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republicans embraced a new leader Wednesday and prepared to get behind a crisis-averting budget-and-debt deal in a day of dramatic fresh starts at the Capitol after years of division and disarray.

Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, the 2012 GOP vice presidential candidate and a telegenic spokesman for conservative priorities, was nominated by his colleagues in a secret-ballot election to serve as speaker of the House, second in line to the presidency. The full House will confirm that choice on Thursday.

“This begins a new day in the House of Representatives,” Ryan, 45, said after the vote. “We are turning the page.”

Immediately after choosing Ryan to chart a new course for their fractured party, Republicans trooped onto the House floor to begin casting votes on a huge two-year budget deal struck in recent days between President Barack Obama and congressional leaders of both parties.

The agreement would raise the government’s borrowing limit through March of 2017, averting an unprecedented default just days away. It would also set the budget of the federal government for the next two years, lifting onerous spending caps and steering away from the brinkmanship and shutdown threats that have haunted Congress for years.
