Aide to Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel assaulted, taunted with anti-Semitic slur

(JTA) — A top aide to Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel was physically assaulted at a downtown vigil by assailants who also made an anti-Semitic slur.

Vance Henry, Emanuel’s deputy chief of staff, was punched, tackled and kicked on Sunday evening at the event for two people who were shot and killed over the weekend by Chicago police officers, the Chicago Tribune reported Tuesday.

It is believed the anti-Semitic remarks were directed at Emanuel, who is Jewish but was not at the vigil. Henry is black. The newspaper did not say what the slur was.

“What are you doing here, you should be downtown doing something about this,” one of the assailants reportedly said. The same man also said that “the police are killing us,” according to the report.

Emanuel reportedly was scheduled to return early from a family vacation to Cuba to deal with the situation.

The Russian Air Force has helped the Syrian Democratic Forces liberate 20 residential areas from Islamic State (IS, previously ISIS/ISIL) around the city of Raqqa, the extremist groups’ stronghold, a Russian military spokesman said.

Assisted by Russian air support, the Syrian Democratic Forces have made significant progress in IS-controlled areas in Syria, according to the head of the Russian General Staff’s operations department, Lieutenant-General Sergey Rudskoy.

“The troops of the Syrian Democratic Forces, commanded by Ayman Flyat el-Ganim, with the support of the Russian Air Force, conducted an offensive toward the ISIS capital, Raqqa. As a result of this offensive, approximately 20 residential areas were liberated from extremists. Strategic control was established over the important dam on the river Euphrates at al-Ahmar,” Rudskoy said at a press conference in Moscow.

WASHINGTON (JTA) – Ted Cruz wants to make sure you understand: “Republican” and “neoconservative” are no longer synonymous.

The Texas senator, inching up to second place behind front-runner Donald Trump in the polls just weeks before the Iowa caucuses, has launched a broadside against the “crazy” movement that not so long ago was inextricable from establishment GOP foreign policy.

Cruz has long advocated against regime change, but in a Nov. 30 interview with Bloomberg News, he named neoconservatives as the villains of a policy that mires Americans overseas.

“If you look at President Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, and for that matter some of the more aggressive Washington neocons, they have consistently misperceived the threat of radical Islamic terrorism and have advocated military adventurism that has had the effect of benefiting radical Islamic terrorists,” Cruz said.

Saudi Arabia and Turkey have reached an agreement on setting up a “strategic cooperation council” to boost bilateral ties, says Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir.

Jubeir made the announcement on Tuesday during a joint press conference with his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu, following a meeting between Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Riyadh.

“The meeting produced a desire to set up a high-level strategic cooperation council between the two countries,” he said, noting that the council will address military, security, economic, trade, energy and investment between both states.

“The aim of this council is to bring about a qualitative transformation between Turkey and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia so they would be truly strategic and to serve the interests of the two countries and peoples,” he added.

During the conference, Jubeir also said that the recent death of Zahran Alloush, the leader of the terrorist group calling itself Jaysh al-Islam, does not serve the peace process in Syria as he was a leading figure in the fight against Daesh.

On Friday, the Syrian army confirmed that Alloush and several other terrorist leaders were killed in an air campaign against terrorist hideouts in the Damascus countryside of Eastern Ghouta. Jaysh al-Islam, which is influenced by Wahhabism, is one of several Takfiri terrorist groups operating in Syria. According to SANA, the organization is armed and funded by Saudi Arabia.

According to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), other senior Saudi royals and officials, including the kingdom’s crown prince, the deputy crown prince, and several Saudi ministers also attended the meeting between Salman and Erdogan. Erdogan’s visit to Saudi Arabia took place shortly after Riyadh announced the formation of an anti-terror military coalition compromised of 34 Islamic nations, including Turkey.

The Syrian army has retaken several areas from terrorist groups in the Arab country gripped by foreign-backed militancy for more than four years.

On Tuesday, Syrian army soldiers, backed by fighters from allied popular defense groups, gained control over the town of Burj al-Qasab, located in the northwestern province of Latakia, Syria’s official SANA news agency reported.

Elsewhere in the southwestern province of Dara’a, Syrian government troops captured the Brigade 82 military base, situated close to the town of al-Shaykh Maskin.

An unidentified military source told SANA that army units inflicted heavy losses upon terrorist elements by destroying a number of vehicles belonging to militants.

The director of the so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Rami Abdel Rahman, said Syrian army troops, backed by fighters from Lebanon’s resistance movement Hezbollah, were engaged in fierce clashes with terrorists in Dara’a.

He further noted that al-Shaykh Maskin was strategically important as it is located on crossroads leading north to the Syrian capital, Damascus, and east to the city of As-Suwayda.

‘US and NATO operation in Afghanistan has failed’ – Russian president’s special envoy

The US and NATO mission in Afghanistan has been a complete failure, the Russian President’s special envoy for Afghanistan, Zamir Kabulov, told TASS, in evaluating the effectiveness of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) there.

“Assessing the results of the actions of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan, it can be said that they have completely failed their mission,” Kabulov said in an interview to TASS, adding that the ultimate goal of the ISAF anti-terrorist campaign, which consisted in creating “a democratic centralized state” in Afghanistan, has not been achieved.

The special envoy stressed that, not only has the US-led coalition in Afghanistan failed to achieve its main goal, but “has not accomplished any of the tasks it had set before the operation,” as Afghanistan still lacks “strong and stable central authority.”

He also emphasized that, failing to defeat the Taliban by military means, the ISAF’s current policy of national reconciliation de-facto envisions their participation in the new political power structure of Afghanistan.

Kabulov drew attention to the fact that the ongoing “Decisive Support” training mission, which the US and their allies in Afghanistan are currently conducting, has also shown very little result. The program aims to improve the combat readiness of the Afghan army and police, enabling them to independently secure stability and order.

Rape regulations: ISIS laws on ‘proper’ sex slave treatment revealed

Published time: 29 Dec, 2015 20:45

© Ibraheem Abu Mustafa The Islamic State terrorist group has attempted to codify the sexual relations between its fighters and women they capture, by issuing a special ruling on when it’s OK to rape a female slave.

A “fatwa,” which is what a learned interpretation of the Islamic law is called, was released by Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) in late January as “some of the brothers have committed violation in the matter of treatment of the female slaves. These violations are not permitted by Sharia law because these rules have not been dealt with in ages.”

“Are there any warnings pertaining to this matter?” the authors of the document wondered.

The ruling, which was among a batch of terrorist papers obtained by the US Special Operations Forces during a raid in Syria in May, was viewed by Reuters.

Groom from wedding video celebrating Duma attack arrested

JERUSALEM (JTA) — The groom from the wedding where Jewish revelers were captured on video celebrating the deaths of members of a Palestinian family in a firebombing reportedly has been arrested.

The arrest of Yakir Ashbal brings to four the number of wedding celebrants who were arrested Tuesday, according to reports in the Israeli media. A hearing on their remand is scheduled for Wednesday morning. More arrests are expected.

Ashbal told Israel’s Channel 10 last week after the release of the video that he did not see the activity captured on camera at his wedding, which had 600 guests.

“At my wedding I was in the clouds, not on the ground at all,” he told Channel 10. “I don’t control what happens at my wedding. I’m just the groom.”

Saudi Arabia says the increase in the kingdom’s military spending in 2015 was almost entirely due to its aggression against Yemen as Riyadh struggles with a rising annual budget deficit.

Economy Minister Adel Fakeih said Monday that Saudi Arabia’s expenditure in 2015 increased by 13 percent to hit 975 billion riyals (USD 260 billion), adding that about 20 billion riyals (USD 5.3 billion) of that figure was in military and security, which he attributed to the war on Yemen.

Since launching its attacks on Yemen on March 26, Riyadh has been resisting calls for disclosing the costs of the war, which largely consists of airstrikes.

More than 7,500 people have been killed in Yemen over the past months. Riyadh says the campaign was meant to undermine the Houthi Ansarullah movement and restore power to the fugitive former president, Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi. The United Nations says more than 2,500 of the fatalities have been civilians.

The Reuters news agency estimated earlier this year that Saudi Arabia would spend approximately USD 175 million per month to support its campaign, adding that a further USD 500 million will be allocated to a potential ground invasion.

The significant increase in the military spending comes against the backdrop of falling oil prices in the international markets which has badly affected Saudi Arabia as the country relies on oil for roughly 90 percent of its revenue. The Saudi economy minister posted a 98-billion-dollar budget deficit for 2015, adding that the kingdom will face a deficit of USD 87 billion for the next year. To make up for the heavy expenditures of the Yemen war and its rising deficits, Riyadh has adopted a series of austerity measures at home by increasing the cost of fuel and some services up to 80 percent. That has already triggered a nationwide dissatisfaction with many urging the rulers to stop the aggression against Yemen in order to avoid further economic woes.

Recently, three in five EU citizens told pollsters that they do not approve of migrants coming from outside the continent. With more than 1 million arriving in 12 months, rising tension is finding outlets at the ballot box and on the street.

Merkel faces backlash against Germany’s open-door policy

Angela Merkel’s Germany, the continent’s unspoken leader, has borne the main brunt of the inflows, while failing to persuade neighboring states to follow its lead. But, perhaps due to the historical guilt of Nazism, and a restrictive public discourse, growing anger has not yet gone mainstream.

Merkel’s own cabinet has backpedaled furiously in the past several months, re-introducing border controls, putting more and more countries on black lists, and making it more difficult for migrants to secure permanent residence. Whether this will divert the people smugglers’ routes is unclear, but with over three-quarters of Germans telling EU’s Eurobarometer survey immigration was one of their two biggest concerns, Merkel had better hope she is not shuttering an empty stable.

Nordic social conscience put to the test

Historically, the socially-oriented Nordic states have been a prime destination for asylum seekers, with Sweden regularly receiving more applications per 100,000 of the population than any other European country, and Finland and Norway not far behind.
But these are also some of the most homogeneous, cohesive societies in Europe, and the mass arrival of migrants has been highly noticeable, and has divided communities.

The partisan media reports these outbreaks either as understandable grievances boiling over, or evidence of racism, but with more migrants on the way, and no practical solutions in sight, Europe will have to get used to the hum of low-level confrontation with its migrant population, and the booming proclamations of triumph from its right-wing parties.

Holocaust denial on the rise in Eastern Europe

After Lithuania changed the definition of ‘genocide’ and Baltic countries have turned murderers of Jews into national heroes, Holocaust researchers are accusing the State of Israel of standing idly by as history is being re-written. The testimonies are fading away, the memorial sites are turning into entertainment centers, and the historical story is seen as just another “Jewish narrative”: If anyone thought that Holocaust denial was a marginal phenomenon among a few anti-Semites and Israel haters, evidence shows that is it a much wider, more well-established and dangerous phenomenon that is receiving reinforcement on the ground from eastern European countries.
In Lithuania, for example, people are doing everything to downplay the significance of the horrors of the war as a unique event in the history of mankind, and in Ukraine a famous mass murder site has turned into a thriving jogging spot.

According to Dr. Efraim Zuroff, a Nazi hunter and director of the Simon Wiesenthal Center office in Jerusalem, many countries have adopted an intentional policy leading to de facto Holocaust denial. While researchers and historians are trying to fight the new phenomenon and to get western Europe to join the battle, the State of Israel is actually standing back and doing nothing.

Russia removes Iran’s enriched uranium

US Secretary of State Kerry says Tehran shipped out all but 300 kg of low-enriched uranium, in line with nuclear deal, as well as remaining stock of uranium enriched to higher levels.

VIENNA – A landmark nuclear deal with Tehran moved closer to implementation Monday, with US Secretary of State John Kerry announcing that tons of enriched uranium that could potentially be turned to use in atomic arms were on a ship heading from Iran to Russia.

Kerry hailed the development as “one of the most significant steps Iran has taken toward fulfilling its commitments” under the July 14 nuclear agreement, in comments that expanded on information The Associated Press received from a senior Russian diplomat earlier in the day.
