ISIS declares war on Shias on Arabian Peninsula – monitoring group

The Saudi division of the Islamic State jihadist group has called on jihadist supporters to clear the Arabian Peninsula of Shia Muslims in an audio recording, according to a US-based monitoring group.

In the 13-minute recording a representative of IS (Islamic State, formerly ISIS/ISIL) militant group’s division in Najd Province, a region in the central Arabian Peninsula, urged supporters to declare war on “enemies of Islam, especially Shiites” on the peninsula’s territory, SITE monitoring group reported on Friday.

The man called Shias “disbelievers and apostates” urging followers to “purify the land” of them. The speaker also made reference to the suicide bombing on May 22 in the town of al-Qadeeh, Qatif province in the east of the country on a Shiite mosque. As the result of the bombing 21 people died and more than 50 were wounded.

The Shia minority in Saudi Arabia has long complained of discrimination by the Sunni majority. The attack in al-Qadeeh was the first to target Shia Muslims in Saudi Arabia since November, when a gunman killed at least eight people.

In the recording the IS supporters urged young Saudis to fend off the “Shiite threat” and criticized the kingdom’s current government and King Salman for failing to protect the Sunni majority. Earlier in May IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi dismissed Saudi Arabia’s ruling family accusing it of supporting enemies such as the West and Israel.

On Sunday, King Salman vowed to track down and punish those responsible for a suicide bombing at the Shia mosque despite increasing tensions between Sunnis and Shias in the region. Saudi Arabia is leading the military campaign against Houthis in neighboring Yemen allied to Shia power Iran.

The Kingdom is also is part of an international coalition carrying out air strikes on IS positions in Iraq and Syria. The jihadists have vowed to carry out revenge attacks.

Washington court ruling opens door to lawsuit over BDS

(JTA) — The Washington Supreme Court reversed a ruling that protected the Olympia Food Co-op from lawsuits over its boycott of Israeli products.

The ruling Thursday, reached through a vote of 9-0 justices, voids a 2012 ruling by the Thurston County Superior Court against five people who in 2011 sued the co-op over its policy on Israel.

The 2012 ruling not only dismissed the five plaintiffs’ claim, but also slapped them with a $230,000 bill for legal expenses and fines connected to state legislation designed to punish those found to have used litigation to intimidate political rivals.

The decision on Thursday opens to the plaintiffs the possibility of suing Olympia once more in a trial court and having their claims reviewed. It also means the plaintiffs do not need to pay the $230,000 bill.

The file photo shows Turkey’s Mavi Marmara vessel targeted in a 2010 fatal attack by Israeli forces en route to the besieged Gaza Strip.

A vessel carrying much-needed goods for the people in the Gaza Strip is set to arrive in Galicia, Spain, on its way to the besieged Palestinian territory in an attempt to break the Israeli blockade.

Marianne, which is part of Freedom Flotilla III and is transporting a limited cargo of solar panels and medical equipment for the people in Gaza, is expected to dock in the municipality of Bueu on Saturday, Palestinian Ma’an news agency reported.

The Scandinavian trawler that set sail from Sweden on May 10 will make a stop in Spain on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the brutal Israeli assault on the Freedom Flotilla.

Israeli forces attacked the flotilla in high seas in the Mediterranean Sea on May 31, 2010, killing nine Turkish citizens, including a teenager with Turkish-American citizenship, and injuring about 50 other people who were part of the team on the six-ship flotilla. A 10th individual died after four years in a coma.

Marianne will join other ships heading to Gaza in “a peaceful, nonviolent action to break the illegal and inhumane blockade of the Gaza Strip,” the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) said in a statement.

The statement added that the boat would carry a crew of five people as well as “up to eight delegates as passengers in each section of the route,” with the delegates to be announced along the way.

Lieberman: PM ignoring danger of Hamas war preparations

Yisrael Beytenu chairman says prime minister and defense minister bear responsibility for looming catastrophe after Hamas official declares Gaza border road is being paved in preparation for “window of opportunity to attack”. Yisrael Beytenu MK Avigdor Lieberman harshly criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon on Saturday following news of a new dirt road being paved by Hamas along the border fence.

Former Hamas interior minister Fathi Hamad declared publicly on Friday that the road was being prepared for a “window of opportunity to attack” – a statement Lieberman defined as “blaring a bullhorn at a prime minister who insists on remaining deaf.”

Iran said Saturday it would be “out of the question” for the UN atomic watchdog to question Iranian scientists and inspect military sites as part of a final nuclear agreement with world powers.

“Interviews with scientists is completely out of the question and so is inspection of military sites,” senior Iranian negotiator Abbas Araqchi told state television.

The head of the UN’s atomic watchdog Yukiya Amano told AFP in an interview this week that if Iran signs a nuclear deal with world powers it will have to accept inspections of its military sites.

Araqchi’s comments come as Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his US counterpart John Kerry were holding crucial talks in Geneva to try and hammer out a historic nuclear deal ahead of a June 30 deadline.

Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei last week ruled out allowing nuclear inspectors to visit military sites or the questioning of scientists.

Top US diplomat John Kerry and his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif began key nuclear talks in Geneva on Saturday ahead of a June 30 deadline to reach a historic deal.

Kerry and Zarif arrived simultaneously on the first floor of a leading Geneva hotel in opposite elevators and greeted each other with smiles and a handshake.

They chatted as they walked together along the corridor to the meeting room on the same floor.

Asked by a journalist, whether they expected to meet the nuclear negotiating deadline, Zarif smiled and said: “We will try.” Kerry did not respond.

After an interim accord hammered out in Geneva in November 2013, Washington and Tehran are grappling with the final details of the ground-breaking agreement that would see Iran curtail its nuclear ambitions in return for a lifting of crippling international sanctions.

The Sinai-based affiliates of Islamic State have warned they will launch a missile barrage against the Israeli border town of Eilat in the coming days.

The terror group made the threat in a post to its Facebook page on Thursday.

The group formerly known as Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group late last year, changing its name to Wilayat Sina (Province of Sinai).

The organization has fired a small number of rockets at Eilat on past occasions, though these did not cause any injuries or significant damage.

It has carried out repeated deadly attacks on Egyptian security forces in the Sinai Peninsula. In April multiple shooting and bombing attacks killed around 30 civilians and security personnel. At least four policemen have been killed in attacks in May.

The past academic year has seen a significant increase in anti-Israeli and anti-Semitic activities across US college campuses, the Anti-Defamation League warned on Friday.

The anti-Semitism watchdog said it had recorded 520 anti-Israel events on campuses during the 2014-2015 year, an increase of 38 percent over the previous year. It also counted 29 campaigns related to the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, noting this was almost double the instances seen in the previous year.

The ADL also listed various cases of anti-Semitism on campuses, many of which involved vandalism, graffiti and hateful epithets targeting Jewish students.

“These incidents are troubling and are generating heightened concern in the Jewish community about the atmosphere on campus for Jewish students,” ADL Director Abraham Foxman said. “While the vast majority of Jewish students report feeling safe on their campuses, the incidents reported at certain schools are disturbing and must be proactively addressed.

In what would constitute a stunning rhetorical volte-face, Pope Francis reportedly walked back earlier statements praising Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and dubbed some of Israel’s detractors “anti-Semitic.”

In comments made to veteran Portuguese-Israeli journalist Henrique Cymerman Thursday, Francis was quoted as saying that “anyone who does not recognize the Jewish people and the State of Israel — and their right to exist — is guilty of anti-Semitism.”

Francis was also said to have backtracked on statements he was reportedly heard making earlier this month designating the visiting Abbas “a bit an angel of peace.”

The pope recalled telling Abbas in Italian that he hopes the Palestinian chief might one day become an angel of peace in the future, according to Cymerman — although ostensibly he has not yet reached that level.

British Jewish woman wins $25k in religious discrimination suit

(JTA) —A British Jewish woman won $25,000 in damages from a company that refused to hire her because she is Shabbat observant.

Aurelie Fhima applied to Travel Jigsaw in Manchester, but was rejected after she said at a job interview that her religious observance prevents her from working on Friday nights and Saturdays, the Telegraph reported.

Travel Jigsaw officials sent her a letter saying that they could not hire her, because “We are still looking for people who are flexible enough to work Saturdays.”

When the company refused to reconsider its decision, she sued for religious discrimination.

Child Holocaust survivors get $60 million — in a single day

NEW YORK (JTA) – The Claims Conference sent out payments totaling about $60 million in a single day last week – the first of an estimated 70,000 one-time payments of approximately $2,750 to child survivors of the Holocaust.

The payments follow the creation last year of a new $190 million Child Survivor Fund that offers one-time payouts to Jews born in 1928 or later who spent time in Nazi concentration camps, ghettos or at least six months in hiding or living under a false identity during World War II. The payouts are in addition to any other monies the survivors receive or have received.

“These children endured devastating separation from parents, witnessed unimaginable atrocities, suffered from malnutrition and hunger, and lived through other persecution that stole their childhoods,” Julius Berman, the Claims Conference president, said in a statement this week. “All of these have had a cumulative effect and are resulting in late-onset problems that only now are manifesting as physical and psychological symptoms in the survivors’ advanced age.”

Germany is providing approximately 75 percent of the funding for the program. The balance comes from the Claims Conference’s so-called Successor Organization, which is funded by the sale of Jewish properties recovered in the former East Germany for whom no heirs could be found.

U.K. launches inquiry into Hasidic group over female driving ban

(JTA) — The United Kingdom launched an inquiry and condemned a Hasidic group in London for barring women from driving.

Last week, Belz rabbis in London issued a letter saying that female drivers violate “the traditional rules of modesty in our camp” and that children would be expelled from Belz schools if their mothers dropped them off by car.

On Friday, U.K. Education Secretary Nicky Morgan called the ban “completely unacceptable in modern Britain,” according to the Jewish Chronicle.

“If schools do not actively promote the principle of respect for other people they are breaching the independent school standards,” Morgan said. “Where we are made aware of such breaches we will investigate and take any necessary action to address the situation.”

The leader of Hungary’s far-right Jobbik said Saturday he was determined to distance the party from radical elements and move it to the center in a bid to win general elections in 2018.

“We will win the election, take a deep breath and rebuild our country,” Gabor Vona told the party’s congress in Budapest.

Jobbik, once considered a fringe, racist party, has been successfully shunning its bad image and Vona has toned down the party’s rhetoric, which once stigmatised Roma as criminals.

In 2012, one Jobbik politician said Hungary should draw up lists of Jews who pose a “national security risk”.

Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s ruling Fidesz party leads the opinion polls, but Jobbik has picked up disillusioned voters, securing its place as the EU member’s second-largest party.
