Palestinian baby burned to death, Israel searches for Jewish extremists
(JTA) — After a Palestinian baby was burned to death in a West Bank arson attack by suspected Jewish extremists, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered a manhunt to track down the perpetrators.
Netanyahu said in a statement that the arson Thursday night in the Palestinian West Bank village of Duma near Nablus was “a terrorist attack in every respect.” Ali Saad Dawabsha, 18 months old, was killed when flames engulfed one of two homes that the arsonists set ablaze.
His parents and 4-year-old brother were severely injured in the fire, which police suspect was started by Jewish extremists. The Hebrew words “Revenge” and “Long live the king messiah” were spray-painted on walls at the site of the attack, alongside a Star of David, according to Army Radio.

EU: West Bank arson shows need for political solution
(JTA) — A European Union official said the killing of a Palestinian baby near Nablus showed the need for a political solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
The statement by the office of E.U. Foreign Affairs Head Federica Mogherini came following a deadly fire that Jewish extremists are believed to have started at the home of a Palestinian family in the West Bank village of Duma near Nablus Thursday night.
“The cold-blooded killing of Palestinian toddler Ali Dawabsha, presumably by extremist settlers highlights the urgent need for a political solution of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict,” the statement read. It also urged Israel to “|take resolute measures to protect the local population” and called for “full accountability, effective law enforcement and zero tolerance for settler violence.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered security forces to launch a manhunt for the killers, who left Hebrew-language graffiti about revenge at the family’s home. On Friday, he visited members of the Dawabsha family at the Israeli hospital where several of them, including Ali’s older brother, Ahmed Sa’ed, are recovering from injuries they sustained in the blaze.

UK leader comes under fire for remarks on migrants
Cameron’s use of the word ‘swarm’ to refer to flow of illegal aliens brings accusations of dehumanizing language
LONDON — Prime Minister David Cameron is facing criticism for using the word “swarm” to describe the migrants trying to get into Britain through the Channel Tunnel.
Cameron told ITV News that the situation is “very testing,” and that it was brought on by Britain’s growing economy.
“You have a swarm of people coming across the Mediterranean, because Britain has got jobs,” he said in remarks Thusday.
A candidate for leadership of the opposition Labour Party, Andy Burnham, described the remark as “disgraceful.” Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron said: “We are talking about human beings here, not insects.”
Cameron was questioned amid chaos near the tunnel in Calais, where large numbers of migrants have been scaling fences and trying to get aboard freight trains or trucks bound for Britain.

Canada purchases Iron Dome technology
(JTA) — Canada’s defense forces are purchasing Israeli Iron Dome technology.
The Canadian defense ministry on Wednesday announced the purchase of 10 radar systems for $187 million from Rheinmetall, a German contractor, working with ELTA, a subsidiary of Israel Aerospace Industries, Agence France Press reported.
The radars, which detect indirect fire, are modeled on Israel’s Iron Dome technology.
“Much like Israel’s successful Iron Dome radar technology, the Medium Range Radar system will be able to instantly track enemy fire aimed at Canadian armed forces personnel and help keep them safe during operations,” Jason Kenney, the Canadian defense minister, was quoted as saying.

Palestinians slam Israeli law to force-feed hunger striking prisoners
Palestinians have blasted an Israeli law that allows the Guantanamo-style force-feeding of Palestinian prisoners who are on hunger strike in Israeli jails.
On Thursday, Israel’s parliament (Knesset) passed into law the legislation to force-feed prisoners on hunger strike.
The move has met fierce condemnations, with critics insisting that it is a form of torture to silence protesting inmates.
Issa Qaraqe, who heads the Palestinian Authority’s committee of prisoners’ affairs, on Thursday strongly condemned the Israeli law, saying it is tantamount to legalizing murder and sets a “very dangerous precedent.”
“Force-feeding is unethical torture against prisoners that might lead to their death,” he said, adding that it is “an execution of prisoners who go on hunger strike.”
The Palestinian official also said that the controversial law, which passed with a slim majority, contradicts all international treaties and conventions.
“The law aims to break prisoners’ hunger strikes by force-feeding them. They strike peacefully and for just demands,” Qaraqe said.

Colorado school district settles church-state case with Jewish teacher
(JTA) — A Colorado district settled a church-state lawsuit with a Jewish teacher who claimed that one of its schools “operates largely to promote the evangelical Christian ideals” of a particular church.
The settlement, reached Tuesday, stipulates that the Florence district stop allowing numerous religious activities cited in the lawsuit.
Robert Basevitz, a history teacher at Florence High, sued the Fremont RE-2 district in May, contending that school officials violated the separation of church and state by allowing the Cowboy Church at Crossroads to hold numerous activities at the school during school hours and school officials to participate in and promote the activities while acting in their official capacities.
According to the lawsuit, two large signs promoting the church hang on school property; school officials participate in daily morning prayer services at the school’s flagpole, often preventing others from entering the school until it is over; and church leaders regularly use the school’s public address system to promote its activities to students.

Porn to be restricted for Norway inmates
So far, prisoners in Norway have been allowed free access to pornography – provided it doesn’t involve violence or children, the Local reported.
However, a new memo by the Norwegian Directorate for Correctional Services reads that porn can be banned if the data poses “specific and high” risks to peace and security.
Also, the memo details on the porn limits for prisoners.
“As long as there is no specific legal basis for denial, we must accept access, even though we don’t like it,” Knut Are Svenkerud, the leader of the Norwegian Union for Correctional Workers told Bergens Tidende newspaper.
He added, though, that the union would like to see porn prohibited altogether, as it can become “a commodity with illegal ‘rental’ between inmates.”

Four Democrats get behind Obama’s Iran nuclear deal
Michigan’s Rep. Dan Kildee, who represents US hostage held in Iran, says accord is ‘best path forward’
WASHINGTON — Four Democrats, including one who represents an American hostage in Iran, said Thursday they would support the Iran nuclear deal in a major boost for President Barack Obama.
“It’s very clear to me that the agreement is the best path forward,” Rep. Dan Kildee (D-Michigan) who counts hostage Amir Hekmati as a constituent, told The Associated Press in an interview. “This agreement allows us to prevent (Iran) from gaining a nuclear weapon, and if they cheat, we will know it. If we don’t have the agreement, we don’t have that certainty.”
Hekmati, an American, has been held in Iran since 2011. Kildee said he has told Obama and Hekmati’s relatives about his decision to back the international agreement, which calls on Iran to curb its nuclear program in exchange for billions of dollars in sanctions relief.
Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Maryland), the top Democrat on the House Budget Committee and a Senate candidate, said he would support the agreement, calling it “the best path to achieve our goal of ensuring that Iran never obtains a nuclear weapon.”

Israeli diplomat: Don’t count on US Jews to unify against Iran deal
Consul-general in Philadelphia says lobbying against deal could alienate White House, Democrats and limit Jewish organizational influence
WASHINGTON (JTA) — A top Israeli diplomat in the United States wrote his superiors to warn that they cannot count on the US Jewish community to oppose the Iran nuclear deal.
“At this crucial point of the Iranian issue — which for years has been at the core of Israeli foreign policy and was described countless times by the Israeli leadership as an existential threat — the Jewish community in the United States is not standing as a united front behind Israel and important parts of it are on the fence,” Yaron Sideman, the consul general in Philadelphia, wrote in a memo to Israel’s Foreign Ministry obtained by Haaretz on Thursday.
Sideman quoted a Jewish regional federation CEO as saying that campaigning against the deal could alienate the White House and Democrats, which could inhibit Jewish organizational influence.
The American Israel Public Affairs Committee and at least eight regional federations oppose the July 14 deal, heeding Israel’s government, which says the accord endangers Israel.
