Western expectations of Syrian President Bashar Assad’s imminent fall were misplaced, says Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Assad has public support, meaning no peaceful resolution of the conflict is possible without his participation, he added.
“All the forecasts made by our colleagues in the West and some other parties that the people would rise up and oust him never came true. This means one thing: Assad represents the interests of a significant part of Syrian society. So no peaceful solution can be found without his participation,” the top Russian diplomat said on Thursday in an interview with Radio Russia.
Earlier US President Barack Obama reiterated he does “not foresee a situation in which we can end the civil war in Syria while Assad remains in power” and that he is not the legitimate leader of Syria.
According to Lavrov, senior officials around the world are coming to realize the truth of Russia’s position on the issue and are beginning to distance themselves from Washington’s policies. Eradicating Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) should take precedence over all other issues, he added.

Hollande to tell Obama Europe can’t wait for US war of attrition with ISIS to succeed – report

French President François Hollande is to call for the US to review its strategy in fighting terrorist group Islamic State, arguing that Europe cannot wait for America’s long war of attrition with the jihadists to work, the Guardian reports.
Hollande is to meet US President Barack Obama on Tuesday next week before going to Russia for a visit. The French leader intends to make Obama aware of the extent of damage done to Europe by the developing refugee crisis and the rising threat of terrorist attacks, a European diplomat told the British newspaper.
“The message that we want to send to the Americans is simply that the crisis is destabilizing Europe,”said the diplomat, who did not wish to be named. “The problem is that the attacks in Paris and the refugee crisis show that we don’t have time. There is an emergency.”
The source said that’s the reason why the French president will visit Washington on Tuesday before flying to Moscow.
According to the diplomat, Paris’ position is that the Europeans cannot afford to wait for years for the war of attrition that the US-led coalition is waging on Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) in Iraq and Syria, to take effect. There is an impression in Europe that the US doesn’t fully comprehend the urgency of the issue because it doesn’t have to take the bulk of the refugees fleeting Middle East and pouring into Europe in the biggest movement of people since World War II.

Bernie Sanders accuses Netanyahu of overreacting in Gaza war
In Rolling Stone, US presidential contender promises ‘evenhanded’ approach to Middle East, discusses Jewish heritage
November 19, 2015, 1:12 pm
US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders criticized Israel’s actions during the 2014 Gaza war, saying in an interview published Wednesday that the Jewish state caused more civilian damage than was necessary in the Palestinian enclave.
Sanders, a Vermont senator who is vying against Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination, told Rolling Stone that the US should support Israel’s security and independence, but that as the first Jewish president, he would “maintain an evenhanded approach to the area.”
“I believe in a two-state solution, where Israel has security and the Palestinians have a state of their own,” Sanders said in answer to a question on how his administration would approach Israel. “The United States has got to work with the Palestinian people in improving their standard of living, which is now a disaster, and has been made much worse since the war in Gaza.”
Sanders said that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “overreacted” during the 50-day Israel-Hamas conflict in the summer of 2014. “War is terrible unto itself. But I think that Israel overreacted and caused more civilian damage than was necessary. They have very sophisticated weapons systems. They make the case, and I respect that, that they do try to make sure that civilians are not damaged. But the end result was that a lot of civilians were killed and a lot of housing was destroyed. There was terrible, terrible damage done,” Sanders said.
According UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, which based its figures on a variety of local and international sources, a total of 2,220 Palestinians and 72 Israelis were killed in the 2014’s Gaza conflict between the IDF and the Hamas terror group which rules Gaza.
