The pretty spa town beside a winding river is getting ready for Christmas. A Santa Claus statue stands near the main square, tinsel decorates shop windows and at medieval St Paul’s Church carols will soon be sung by enthusiastic worshippers.
A stroll from this festive scene in Bad Kreuznach in Germany, 33-year-old Aline runs an estate agency, letting out houses and flats from a smart office. A few weeks ago she received a call from a man who, in faltering German, said that a newly arrived Syrian migrant family was looking for a home.
Aline agreed to show the family an empty four-bedroom apartment but, when she arrived at the address, the group of three men, a veiled woman and a gaggle of children suddenly said they had ‘no interest’ in viewing the place.

Israeli defense chief: Russian military jet violated Israeli airspace
JERUSALEM (JTA) — A Russian military jet violated Israeli airspace but was not shot down, Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon said.
The jet breached Israeli airspace by a mile and turned back when Russia was informed of its mistake, Yaalon said Sunday during an interview on Israel Public Radio. The breach came recently while Russia was carrying out airstrikes against rebels in the Syrian civil war.
“Russian planes do not intend to attack us, which is why we must not automatically react and shoot them down when an error occurs,” Yaalon said a week after Turkey downed a Russian jet that it said repeatedly violated Turkish airspace.
Israel is coordinating with Russia to prevent the accidental downing of its planes while operating in and around Syria, Yaalon said. The defense chief noted a hotline to share immediate information.

Eight civilians dead as Saudi jets hit new areas in Yemen
At least eight civilians have lost their lives and several others sustained injuries in Saudi airstrikes against various areas in Yemen.
On Monday, Saudi warplanes struck a residential neighborhood in the al-Talah district of Yemen’s northwestern province of Sa’ada, situated 240 kilometers (150 miles) north of the capital, Sana’a, leaving four women dead and eight others injured, Arabic-language al-Masirah satellite television network reported.
Two children were also killed and as many injured when Saudi military aircraft pounded the al-Misrakh district in the southwestern Yemeni province of Ta’izz.
Separately, Yemeni army soldiers backed by allied fighters from Popular Committees took control of a military camp in Saudi Arabia’s southwestern border region of Najran, destroying six military vehicles.
Yemen has been under military attacks by Saudi Arabia since late March. The Saudi military strikes were launched to supposedly undermine the Ansarullah movement and bring fugitive former President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi back to power.
More than 7,500 people have been killed and over 14,000 others injured since March. The strikes have also taken a heavy toll on the impoverished country’s facilities and infrastructure, destroying many hospitals, schools, and factories.
Aid groups’ access to the affected areas in the Middle Eastern country has also been severely restricted.

Turkey toughens media gag, detains another journalist
Turkish authorities have arrested another journalist amid growing concerns over the Ankara government’s attempts to stifle critical media and crackdown on dissidents.
Ertugrul Ozkok, a columnist and former editor-in-chief of the Turkish-language Hurriyet daily, was arrested on Sunday on charges of slander after publishing an opinion piece indirectly criticizing President Recep Tayyip Erdogan back in early September.
In the op-ed, titled “Listen, grand man,” written after the tragic death of Aylan Kurdi, the three-year-old Syrian child refugee whose body was previously washed up on a beach near the port city of Bodrum, Ozkok denounced the Middle Eastern actors for turning the region into “the most brutal land in the world.”
The article, which did not mention the name of the Turkish leader, further pointed to a “dictator” who thinks the country is the “property of his father.”
Ozkok could face up to five years and four months in prison if found “guilty.”
The arrest came just two days after a prosecutor in Turkey demanded that Can Dundar, the editor-in-chief of center-left Turkish daily Cumhuriyet, along with the paper’s Ankara representative, Erdem Gul, appear in court in Istanbul to face charges of “espionage and treason.” The two journalists had earlier revealed Ankara’s arms delivery to the militants in Syria in their reports. Cumhuriyet says the charges carry up to 45 years in prison altogether.
Outside the courthouse, Dundar told reporters that the government wants to cover up their paper’s revelations, stressing, “There is a crime that has been committed by the state that they are trying to cover up.”

Daesh made $800m from oil sales in Turkey: Iraqi MP
The Daesh Takfiri terrorists have made over $800 million dollars in black market oil sales in Turkey over the last eight months, says Iraqi MP.
He noted that the oil is either “consumed inside” Turkey after being refined in Turkish facilities or is piped to the Mediterranean where it is sold on the international market.
“Money and dollars generated by selling Iraqi and Syrian oil on the Turkish black market is like the oxygen supply to Daesh and its operation,” he added. “Once you cut the oxygen then Daesh will suffocate.”

‘Oxygen for jihadists’: ISIS-smuggled oil flows through Turkey to intl markets – Iraqi MP
“In the last eight months ISIS has managed to sell … $800 million dollars worth of oil on the black market of Turkey. This is Iraqi oil and Syrian oil, carried by trucks from Iraq, from Syria through the borders to Turkey and sold …[at] less than 50 percent of the international oil price,” Mowaffak al Rubaie said in an interview with RT.

Turkey to help EU stem migrant crisis for €3bn and membership talks
Published time: 29 Nov, 2015 19:08
© Francois Lenoir / Reuters Turkey has signed an agreement with the EU at a summit in Brussels in which the country will help stem the flow of migrants to Europe in return for €3 billion ($3.18bn) of support and the reestablishing of talks on EU accession.
1. The EU agrees to provide “an initial” €3 billion ($3.18bn) over two years for Turkey to better cater for the needs of 2.2 million Syrian refugees in the country.
2. The EU promises to open a new chapter in negotiations regarding Turkey’s EU ascension and to bring the country’s standards in economic and financial policies up to scratch.
3. The EU pledges to lift visa requirements for Turkish citizens in the Schengen zone by October 2016 once all the requirements set forth in the EU roadmap are met.
The European Union, struggling with the flow of refugees coming from the war-torn Middle East and North Africa, will allocate €3 billion of initial aid to Turkey that will help with managing the crisis by taking in some 1.5 million migrants, Chancellor Merkel has confirmed, Reuters reports. The sum can be adjusted with time depending on circumstances.
Apart from that, the EU has promised to renew talks on Turkey’s EU membership that haven’t seen much progress since 2005. The new chapter of discussions will open in December while further chapters are expected to come in the first three months of 2016.

Meet Oren Hazan, Israel’s most scandalous lawmaker
No one expected the Likud MK to make it into the Knesset, and it’s been one incident after another since he did
JTA — No one expected Oren Hazan to make it into the Knesset. And ever since he was elected in March, he’s been causing trouble. Allegations against the freshman lawmaker have run the gamut from drugs to sex to bigotry.
Here’s a primer on Hazan’s young, scandal-ridden career.
His campaign ad was a “Godfather” spoof
Political scandal runs in Hazan’s family. His father was ousted from the Knesset in 2003 after illegally voting twice in committee and trying to cover up the evidence. So you’d think Hazan would want to distance himself from his father’s legacy. And you’d be wrong.
In Hazan’s campaign ad ahead of this year’s election, set to the score from “The Godfather,” Hazan’s father pours some red wine, smokes a cigar and does a terrible Vito Corleone impression. Hazan then says he’ll “give the people of Israel an offer they can’t refuse.” That’s pretty much the whole ad.
