Jewish coalition for Syrian refugees awards $148K to groups working in Hungary, Turkey

(JTA) — The Jewish Coalition for Syrian Refugees has awarded $148,000 in new grants to address the welfare of refugee women and children and to ensure psychosocial support for first responders.

The coalition of Jewish organizations, which two weeks ago expanded to address the needs of refugees and migrants in Europe (including Turkey), as well as in Jordan, announced on Thursday grants to World Jewish Relief, working in partnership with the International Blue Crescent, and to the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, working in partnership with the Turkish Jewish Community and IBC as well as with two local Hungarian NGOs, Menedek and the Student Counseling Center of Szeged University.

Since expanding its efforts, the coalition, a subgroup of the Jewish Coalition for Disaster Relief, has raised more than $200,000, on top of the more than $500,00 it had raised for its work in Jordan since 2013.

“While the Jewish humanitarian response to this crisis emerges from the Jewish people’s historic experience of displacement, our focus on vulnerable refugee women and children and the care of first responders represents our desire to provide immediate relief for those whose burdens are be disproportionately felt in a situation of this magnitude,” Will Recant, who coordinates the coalition, said in a news release issued by the coalition.

Israeli forces have clashed with Palestinian protesters southeast of the West Bank town of Nablus, following the funeral of a Palestinian youth who was shot dead by the forces of the Tel Aviv regime.

During the clashes in the town of Beit Furik, Israeli forces fired tear gas at the Palestinians, injuring several protesters.

Earlier, thousands of Palestinians in the town had attended the funeral for the 26-year-old Ahmad Izzat Khatatbeh.

Mourners at the funeral condemned the Israeli killing and called for justice over the death of the handicapped victim.

The victim, who was reportedly deaf and unable to speak, succumbed to his wounds on September 24. He was shot by Israeli forces at a West Bank checkpoint last week.

German nurse shocked after being forced out of flat to make way for refugees

Having lived in the same flat for 16 years, a German woman is being forced to move out to make way for refugees, because building a new shelter is too expensive. The 51 year-old nurse, who has helped asylum seekers in the past, was shocked by the news.

Bettina Halbey, who lives alone in the small town of Nieheim, received a letter from her landlord and the local municipality at the start of September, Die Welt newspaper reported on Thursday.

“I was completely shocked and I can’t even begin to find the words to describe how the city has treated me,” Halbey told the German publication. “I have had to go through a lot of difficulties recently, and then I get this notice. It was like a kick in the teeth.”

Halbey will have until May 2016 to find a new place to live, along with her dog and her cat. The three-story building, where she rented a 90 sq/m flat will now be turned into accommodation for refugees, who are seeking to make Germany their new home.

US Secretary of State John Kerry will meet Saturday with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Zarif on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, to discuss a burgeoning plan to end the four-year civil war in Syria.

Other senior diplomats will attend the meeting, Israel’s Walla news reported, whose aim is to find a diplomatic solution to the conflict, which has cost hundreds of thousands of lives and left millions displaced. According to officials involved with the talks, possible partners for the plan include Russia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Qatar.

There are no plans, however, for President Barack Obama to meet with his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani during the General Assembly, the White House said Thursday.

The Kerry-Zarif meeting comes after the top US negotiator for the Iranian nuclear deal said Friday that the Obama administration was ready to open a dialogue with Iran about the situation in Syria.

Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman said such a discussion would “make sense” in the context of current developments in the Syrian conflict. However, she also noted that there is resistance to the idea within Iran, which, along with Russia, is a main supporter of Syrian President Bashar Assad. She said the subject of Syria had been raised informally on the sidelines of the nuclear negotiations that ended in July but never in a structured way.

Trump, Carson have Republican Jewish establishment worried

Longtime GOP Jewish donors and activists look on in dismay as the two presidential hopefuls lead the polls

WASHINGTON (JTA) – The Republican Jewish establishment is watching the surge of political outsiders — like Donald Trump and Ben Carson — in the presidential primaries with dismay.

“It’s like we have a conference call every morning, and we ask, ‘What can we do to screw ourselves up today?’” said Fred Zeidman, a longtime fundraiser for Republican presidential candidates.

Zeidman’s exasperation pervades the Jewish Republican world: A party that has, in recent years, established a cozy relationship with Jewish conservatives seems to be careening — at least since the presidential race began.

Donald Trump, the billionaire reality show star, has lobbed rhetorical bombs at Hispanics, women and GOP rivals, and promised to deport 11 million illegal immigrants. Ben Carson, the retired world-famous neurosurgeon, said this weekend that a Muslim can’t be president.

The two men are jostling for the lead in polls, with former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina in third. All three have never held elected office — and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, along with other establishment candidates, lag behind the outsiders.

Australian Jewish lawmaker chides PM over rapprochement with Iran

(JTA) — An Australian Jewish lawmaker called on Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to reverse the nation’s current policy of rapprochement with Iran.

In a statement issued Monday, Michael Danby, a federal Labor member of parliament representing Melbourne Ports, said that Turnbull “can be a friend of Israel or a friend of the dangerous Iranian regime. He cannot be both.”

Danby has placed advertisements in local media demanding Turnbull order Foreign Minister Julie Bishop to “halt and reverse this slide towards appeasement of the hardline, bellicose regime in Tehran.”

Bishop in recent months has visited Iran, signed an intelligence-secret sharing agreement with Iran, and apparently offered to allow Iranian consulates in Sydney and Melbourne.

Israeli forces have shot and wounded the Nablus police chief and his three-year-old daughter in the occupied West Bank, an official says.

Murad Ishteiwi, a senior official with the Palestinian Fatah movement, told the Ma’an news agency that Colonel Abd al-Latif al-Qaddumi and her daughter Maram sustained injuries after being shot by rubber-coated steel bullets during a Friday assault by Israeli soldiers in the town of Kafr Qaddum, near the occupied West Bank city of Qalqilya.

Ishteiwi said that the child was directly shot in the head while she was standing on a balcony in her home as Israeli forces raided the town to prevent the weekly Kafr Qaddum march.

Maram’s father attempted to take her to the hospital with his car, but Israeli forces opened fire and wounded him in the head, the official added. However, their injuries have been diagnosed as moderate.

Israeli forces regularly storm Palestinian villages, farms, and houses, inflicting physical damage and psychological trauma.

A photo released by the activist group Youth Against Settlements purportedly shows a soldier pointing a gun at Hadil Salah Hashlamoun, an 18-year-old Palestinian student who was left for about 30 minutes to bleed after being shot in al-Khalil, West Bank, September 22, 2015.

Amnesty International has censured the recent killing of a young Palestinian woman by the Tel Aviv regime’s troops in the occupied West Bank, and described it as an illegal execution.

In a detailed public statement released on Friday, the rights group called the shooting death of the 18-year-old Hadil Salah Hashlamoun an “extrajudicial execution,” a prohibited act that constitutes crimes under international law.

The incident occurred on Tuesday morning at a checkpoint in al-Khalil (Hebron). A video published by PalMedia shows Israeli forces and settlers standing around, smiling and laughing in some cases, while the young woman bleeds to death.

The Israeli regime accuses the victim of having a knife and posing a threat to the soldiers guarding the checkpoint, but the four-page statement — based on interviews with two eyewitnesses — refuted the claim.

“This account of events is contradicted by statements made by the two eyewitnesses interviewed by Amnesty International and photographs of the incident show Hashlamoun standing still,” adding that “even if Hashlamoun did have a knife, Israeli soldiers, who are protected with body armor and heavily equipped with advanced weapons, could have controlled the situation and arrested her without threatening her life”.

What weapons is Russia sending Syria?

Advanced T-90 tanks, multiple-rocket ‘Smerch’ type launchers, and even drones copied from Israeli designs among munitions provided to Assad

Built at Uralvagonzavod, Russia’s main tank factory in the Urals, T-90 is the first post-Soviet tank, used by the military since 1993. US officials said some arrived at Syria’s Latakia air base this month. September 26, 2015, 12:37 am

MOSCOW (AFP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin is pushing for a new strategy on Syria and pledges continuing military support for President Bashar Assad, but what equipment is Moscow actually sending Damascus?

Russia’s defense contracts with Syria have been kept under wraps in recent years, but observers have used satellite imagery to identify T-90 tanks and Sukhoi jets in government-controlled territory.

Russia is delivering “all the necessary weapons for fighting the Islamic State group,” said Igor Korotchenko, editor of the pro-Kremlin National Defence magazine.

He said deliveries ensure a three-pronged strategy that includes reconnaissance, air strikes and ground forces. “Using them separately would not be effective.”

BEIRUT — The leader of Lebanon Hezbollah terror group has welcomed what he described as Russia’s growing “combat presence” in Syria, saying it would have a significant impact on the war in the neighboring country.

Moscow has denied that it is building up its presence in Syria to protect its long-time ally, Syrian President Bashar Assad, but says instead that it wants to help him fight the Islamic State group.

Hassan Nasrallah said Friday that the deployment of Russian warplanes and precision missiles, as well as “resources with operating teams” was a “great development” that would influence the situation on the ground.

Nasrallah spoke on Hezbollah’s al-Manar TV.

He said Russia had been talking with allies about an expanded alliance against the IS after US-led airstrikes failed to uproot the extremists.

Eric Cantor almost became first Jewish Speaker, Boehner aide reveals

Former Rep. Eric Cantor apparently just missed becoming the first Jewish speaker — second in line to the presidency after the vice-president.

An aide to Boehner, the Republican House speaker who is quitting, dropped the bombshell Friday: Boehner had wanted to step down last year but Majority “Leader [Eric] Cantor’s loss in his primary changed that calculation.”

So reported the Huffington Post’s Sam Stein and Ryan Grim, who do not name the aide.

As majority leader, Cantor was already the highest ranking Jewish legislator in U.S. history. Some say he was the highest-ranking Jewish government official, but it’s not clear majority leader bests secretary of state, a post held by Henry Kissinger in the 1970s.

The Jewish people in 2050: 2 very different scenarios

Hebrew University demographer takes a look into the future of Judaism: Will peace and security lead to a population boom or will uncertainty and conflict depress demographic figures?

Prof. Sergio DellaPergola

09.22.15, 10:17

At the start of Jewish New Year 5776, the Jewish people number about 14.3 million people, according to a definition similar to the one accepted by the Israeli Supreme Court.

Being a Jew today means first and foremost the willingness to express a self-identification with the Jewish people, including everything in the range between very religious and anti-religious, excluding people of a different religion.

Out of all these, there are about 6.3 million Jews living in the State of Israel (in addition to some 360,000 relatives who are not registered as Jews in the Interior Ministry) and about 8 million who live in the Diaspora: 5.7 million in the United States and 2.3 million in all other countries (mainly France, Canada, Britain, Russia, Argentina, Germany, Australia and Brazil).

A forecast for 2050 provides a high-probability scenario of about 20 million Jews in Israel and in the world, compared to a low-probability scenario of 14 million. According to a mid-probability scenario of 17 million, in 2050 the Jewish people will be able to return to its proportions before the Holocaust.
