Israeli settlers have conducted yet another arson attack against Palestinian property by setting ablaze hundreds of acres of open land in the occupied West Bank, officials say.

Local sources and senior Palestinian officials confirmed on Sunday that the arson attack was carried out near the village of Burin, located south of Nablus.

There has been no word on possible casualties.

The latest arson attack comes amid boiling anger among Palestinians over the death of two members of a family in a similar attack by settlers on July 31. The 18-month-old toddler of the Dawabsheh family, identified as Ali, burned to death after extremist settlers firebombed the house in the village of Duma near Nablus.

His father, Sa’ad, succumbed to his burns on Saturday.

Vatican group seeks indictment of Jewish leader who spoke in favor of church destruction

(JTA) — A Vatican group is asking Israel’s attorney general to indict the head of a far-right Jewish group who recently expressed approval for destroying churches in Israel.

The Custody of the Holy Land, in a letter sent to Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein on Sunday, said that Rabbi Benzi Gopstein of the group Lehava poses a threat to Christians in Israel, Religion News Service reported. The letter referenced Gopstein’s comments during an Aug. 4 program that Christianity is idolatry and that the Bible calls for the destruction of idol worship.

“The writing is on the wall and the attack on people that will cause unknown results is not a matter of ‘if,’ but of ‘when,’” warned the group, which is in charge of the Catholic Church’s holdings in Israel.

In June, the Church of the Multiplication in the Galilee was damaged in an arson attack by far-right Jewish extremists. In recent years, other churches have also been targeted by Jewish extremists in “price tag” attacks.

Israel releases at least 9 Jewish suspects in firebombing of Palestinian home

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israel has released at least nine West Bank Jews who were arrested as part of the investigation into the firebombing of a Palestinian home that left a baby and his father dead.

At least nine people were arrested Sunday in raids on two West Bank outposts; the details on the raids are under a gag order.

“All those arrested yesterday for interrogation have been released,” a spokeswoman for Israel’s Shin Bet domestic security agency told AFP, with no elaboration, the news service reported Monday.

The July 31 attack took place in the Palestinian West Bank village of Duma.

The Israeli regime’s illegal settlers have committed 11,000 assaults against Palestinian residents and their properties across the occupied West Bank since January 2015, the Arab League says.

In a Sunday statement, the Arab body’s secretariat further underlined that the number of attempts by the Israeli settlers to force their way into East Jerusalem’s al-Aqsa Mosque compound have surged significantly within the same period, the Middle East Monitor reported Monday.

The Arab League further blamed the Israeli authorities for “providing funds to settlers and extremists to continue their assaults against al-Aqsa Mosque and Jerusalem.”

The Israeli violations “run counter to the UN Charter, international law, and international legitimacy resolutions,” added the organization, which also blamed the Tel Aviv regime for “the crimes committed by extremist settlers.”

On Sunday, settlers hoisted the flag of the Israeli regime outside the gates of the compound in East al-Quds (Jerusalem), which was captured and annexed by the Israeli occupying forces in 1967.

The statement was released a week after a Palestinian toddler was burnt to death in an arson by Israeli settlers near the West Bank city of Nablus. The child’s father also succumbed to his injuries days later.

French police say time to ‘bring in British Army’ to Calais to tackle illegal immigrants

Police in Calais, from where thousands of illegal immigrants from Africa and the Middle East risk their lives trying to cross the English Channel to make it to the UK, have suggested bringing in the British army to curb the crisis.

The head of the Alliance union for police deployed to the French port and Eurotunnel site, Bruno Noel, has warned that the situation could soon get out of control if additional help is not provided. He complained that his unit is “doing Britain’s dirty work.”

“We have only 15 permanent French border police at the Eurotunnel site,” the Daily Telegraph quoted him as saying.

“Can you imagine how derisory this is given the situation?

“So I say, why not bring in the British Army, and let them work together with the French?” Mr Noel added.

Al-Qaeda’s Syria branch withdraws from frontline against ISIS

Al-Nusra Front has withdrawn from frontline positions against Islamic State on the Turkish border, citing disapproval of a Turkish-US plan which only serves “Turkey’s national security” rather than the fight against Syrian President Bashar Assad.

A statement by the Al-Qaeda-linked group, dated Sunday, expressed discontent at a US-Turkey plan to drive Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) from the Syria-Turkey border, claiming the plan is only aimed at serving Ankara’s priorities.

Al-Nusra Front said that “facing this current scene,” its only option was to withdraw and leave the frontline positions with IS in the northern Aleppo countryside “for any fighting faction in these areas to take over,” as quoted by Reuters.

The group did, however, say that it would maintain frontline positions against IS in other areas, including the Hama province and Qalamoun mountain range, located near the Lebanese border.

It is understood that the statement is in response to an announcement by the US and Turkey last month, during which the two countries stated their intention to drive IS fighters from a strip of land in northern Syria, providing air cover for Syrian rebels in the area. Turkey also agreed to let the US use Incirlik Air Base to launch airstrikes against IS.

Relations between Washington and Al-Nusra Front recently took a sharp turn, with the group attacking US-trained rebels in Syria just over one week ago, capturing two leaders and at least six fighters. The American-led anti-IS coalition responded with airstrikes in an effort to help the US-trained group, known as Division 30.

Poster wars: Jerusalem broadsheets support and oppose pride parade stabber

After posters praising Yishai Shlissel appear in haredi neighborhoods, posters condemning attack are hung, reflecting tension between radical fringe and ‘silent majority’ opposing violence.

A week after Yishai Shlissel stabbed six people at the Jerusalem pride parade, murdering 16-year-old Shira Banki, posters hung in the city reflected a range of reactions among the haredi population.

Posters seen on Wednesday and signed by a group calling itself “The Faithful Jewry” praised the killer, in one case drawing a connection to the biblical tale of Phineas, who personally executed the leader of the tribe of Simeon for having sexual relations with a Midianite woman. The posters, which were found in haredi neighborhoods in the capital, portrayed Shlissel as a messenger of the people and of God.

FERGUSON, Missouri (AP) — The anniversary of 18-year-old Michael Brown’s death in Ferguson, Missouri, began with a solemn march in his honor and ended with a rowdy protest that was interrupted by gunfire.

Shot rang out around 11:15 p.m. Sunday as several hundred people gathered on West Florissant Street.

St. Louis County Police said in an emailed statement that an officer who came under “heavy gunfire” had returned shots.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether any one was injured in the shooting, but minutes after the shots were heard, an Associated Press photographer saw a man lying face down, covered in blood, behind a boarded-up restaurant. It wasn’t immediately clear how badly the man was injured.

Later, an AP reporter saw a woman overcome with grief. Friends were consoling her. She screamed: “Why did they do it?” Another woman nearby fainted.

Israeli defence minister says he is ‘not responsible’ for lives of Iranian nuclear scientists following historic US-Iran deal

Five Iranian nuclear scientists have died in car bombs although Israel has never been officially linked to these deaths

Israel’s Defence Minister has appeared to imply that his country is prepared to assassinate Iran’s nuclear scientists following a historic deal with the West.

Moshe Ya’alon, the former chief of staff of the Israeli Defence Forces, gave a damning assessment of the nuclear agreement between Iran and a number of western nations in an interview with German newspaper Der Spiegel.

The 65-year-old minister condemned the deal, reportedly telling the newspaper “ultimately it is very clear, one way or another; Iran’s nuclear programme must be stopped.”

Asked whether Iran would see further deaths of its nuclear scientists, he allegedly told the newspaper: “We should be ready to defend ourselves. I’m not responsible for the lives of Iranian scientists.”

Illegal immigrant who was released on probation ‘sexually assaulted elderly woman and then beat her to death in her own home’

  • Victor Ramirez, 29, allegedly broke into Marilyn Pharis’s California home
  • He ‘sexually assaulted and savagely beat the 64-year-old with a hammer’
  • Victim was rushed to hospital with severe injuries; died eight days later
  • Now, officials have revealed Ramirez is an illegal immigrant from Mexico
  • He was on probation for battery at the time of alleged attack on July 24
  • Ramirez was arrested in another house in area on charge of attempted murder – this could be upgraded to murder following Ms Pharis’s death
  • Jose Villagomez, 20, allegedly raped victim during Santa Maria break-in

A man charged in connection with the rape and fatal bludgeoning of an elderly woman in her own home two weeks ago is an illegal immigrant who was on probation at the time of the brutal attack.

Victor Ramirez, 29, reportedly sexually assaulted and savagely beat Marilyn Pharis, 64, with a hammer after breaking into her Santa Maria, California, home while she was sleeping on July 24.

The victim – who was also allegedly raped by a second man, 20-year-old Jose Villagomez, during the intrusion – was taken to an area hospital with ‘severe injuries’, where she died eight days later.

Now, it has emerged that Ramirez is an undocumented, illegal immigrant from Mexico who has been arrested four times in the past two years and was on probation at the time of the alleged break-in.

The victim, who is apparently single with no children, is pictured in a Facebook photo

The suspect had already been charged twice this year with violating the terms of his probation, which he was sentenced to after committing battery against another woman last May, it is said.

But despite his violations – one of which involved the possession of a concealed knife – a Santa Barbara judge ruled that he could go to a substance abuse center instead of jail, Fox reports.

Meanwhile, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement refused to issue an immigration detainer that would have forced local officials to hold him for deportation, jail officials told the new station.

Obama: Iran must end anti-American, anti-Israel postures to be accepted

WASHINGTON (JTA) — President Barack Obama said Iran must drop its anti-American and anti-Israel postures before it transitions into the international community.

Obama defended the Iran nuclear deal in an interview posted Monday at Mic.Com, a news website aimed at millennials.

“There’s going to have to be a transition inside of Iran, even if gradual, in which there’s a recognition that chanting ‘death to America’ or denying the Holocaust among its leaders or threatening Israel with destruction or, you know, providing arms to Hezbollah, which is on the terrorist list — that those things make Iran a pariah in the eyes of a large part of the world,” Obama said.

“And I can guarantee you that the moment the Iranian regime stopped engaging in that kind of rhetoric and that kind of behavior that Iran would just by virtue of its size, talent, resources, immediately rise in its influence and its power in the eyes of the world.”

29 top U.S. scientists praise Iran nuclear deal in letter to Obama

(JTA) — Twenty-nine top U.S. scientists praised the Iran nuclear deal in a letter to President Barack Obama.

Signers of the letter, which was sent Friday, include high-level nuclear scientists, physicists and Nobel laureates, The New York Times reported.

Among them are Richard Garwin, a physicist who helped design the world’s first hydrogen bomb and a Washington adviser on nuclear weapons and arms control, and Siegfried Hecker, who directed the Los Alamos weapons laboratory in New Mexico.

“This is an innovative agreement, with much more stringent constraints than any previously negotiated non-proliferation framework,” read the letter, which said the deal “will advance the cause of peace and security in the Middle East and can serve as a guidepost for future nonproliferation agreements.”

The body in charge of Roman Catholic properties in Palestine has called for legal action against Israeli settlers attacking Christian sites and Palestinian properties.

“The danger and threats to the Church and to Christians in Israel are imminent,” read the letter of Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Custodian of the Holy Land, to the Israeli Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein as seen by AFP on Monday.

The top Vatican-appointed official in the Middle East denounced the “atmosphere of de facto impunity” of Israeli settlers.

The letter comes against the backdrop of deadly attacks by Israeli settlers on Palestinian homes and Christian sites in the occupied Palestinian territories in recent weeks.

“To our utter dismay, recent years have witnessed an alarming and frightening increase in violent attacks against Christians, Christianity and Christian institutions in Israel,” the letter said.

How Jewish family values keep Ivanka Trump classy

A dishy dispatch in Vanity Fair has taken careful note of the skillful way that Ivanka Trump is supporting the scorched-earth presidential campaign of her father, Donald Trump, while avoiding any tinge to her own reputation. The answer, it appears, lies in a careful combination of Jewish family values, hard work and a culture of reality-star worship.

“Everyone knows she is first and foremost a Trump – she even works for the family company,” a source from the within Trump society circles told Vanity Fair of the socialite. “But that doesn’t mean she is 100 percent just like her father, or even agreeing with everything her father says. She is definitely her own person, and she is a person a lot of people would like to be associated with for exactly that reason.”

Indeed, while Ivanka Trump may have kept the Trump name, she has her own family — and her own religion. She converted to Orthodox Judaism in 2009 when she married real estate mogul Jared Kushner, with whom she now has two children.

“We’re pretty observant,” she told Vogue magazine in February. “I am very modern, but I’m also a very traditional person, and I think that’s an interesting juxtaposition in how I was raised as well. I really find that with Judaism, it creates an amazing blueprint for family connectivity.”

According to the report, which was released on Sunday, 629 cases were opened for drug-related crimes committed by Israeli soldiers in 2014 in comparison with 416 cases the previous year. The figures constitute 66 percent of all military investigations in 2014, compared to 50 percent in 2013.

The indictments included a wide range of crimes like selling, producing and trading drugs, as well as refusals to undergo a drug test.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump doesn’t appear to be going away anytime soon, so his rivals are scrambling to figure out how best to handle the blowback from every new bout of bluster drowning out their campaigns.

Lead the charge, if you’re the sole woman in the Republicans’ White House race and trying to crack the top tier for the next debate, by questioning Trump’s ability to withstand the pressure of the presidency.

Belittle Trump’s claim to be a truth-teller by arguing that self-promotion is the billionaire’s guiding philosophy.

Warn that Trump’s provocative comments about women endanger the party’s standing with a group that makes up the majority of voters.

Or simply plead for the incessant Trump questioning to cease so that other candidates can get on with the business of why they’re running.

ATLANTA (AP) — Donald Trump’s bombast continued to roil the Republican presidential race Saturday as several rivals criticized his treatment of a Fox News debate moderator. The organizer of a conservative political convention rescinded the businessman’s prime-time speaking slot, angering those eager to hear him speak.

The real estate mogul and reality television star remained unbowed, refusing to apologize for saying on CNN that Megyn Kelly, who aggressively questioned him during Thursday’s GOP primary debate, had “blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her wherever” when she asked him about his incendiary comments toward women.

At the least, the latest flare-up underscored the potential challenges Trump poses for his rivals as they struggle to react to him without deviating from their own message or alienating the conservatives who are enamored with his insurgent, unconventional bid.

Jeb Bush said Trump threatens the GOP’s 2016 prospects with female voters, who already favor Democrats in presidential elections. “Do we want to win? Do we want to insult 53 percent of our voters?” the former Florida governor told the RedState Gathering in Atlanta, where Trump had been the headliner for an evening reception at the College Football Hall of Fame.
