Russia’s Air Forces are striking only confirmed terrorist targets, such as Islamic State militants and are not after the so-called ‘moderate’ Syrian rebels, Russia’s deputy defense minister said, revealing that ISIS employs up to 30,000 foreign extremists.

“The aviation and other [combat] means are deployed exclusively against the terrorist formations on the territory of Syria. There are no strikes being conducted at any other targets, connected to, for example, the forces of the so-called ‘moderate’ opposition,” Defense Ministry deputy head Anatoly Antonov said on Wednesday. Antonov was speaking at the third meeting of the ASEAN countries’ defense chiefs and their dialogue partners.

Antonov stressed that Moscow has been making efforts to step up “practical cooperation” with regional and international actors in connection with the Syrian op.

US begins training ‘moderate rebels’ on Syrian territory – report

US military advisors have begun training so-called ‘moderate rebels’ in Syria, a media report has claimed. The move represents a complete 180 degree turn around from Obama’s 2013 promise not to put any “American boots on the ground in Syria.”

The report from Lebanon’s satellite television channel, Al Mayadeen, cites a military source stating that American military advisors have already arrived in Syria and are training “moderate rebels” near the city of Salma, located in the western province of Latakia.

“American officers began the training of Turkmen militants around Salma in Latakia province,” the channel cited the source as saying.

Latakia is where Russia has set up its air base for its ongoing anti-terror operation in Syria. Despite Washington’s assertions that the rebel training is now aimed at pushing back Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL), Syrian military sources cited by RIA Novosti say that no IS forces currently hold positions in northern Latakia. Instead, the Syrian Turkmen militants are fighting alongside the al-Nusra Front extremists against the Syrian Army.

U.S.-run French Holocaust deportation compensation fund launches

(JTA) — An agreement between the United States and France to establish a compensation fund for Holocaust survivors deported to Nazi camps via the French rail system went into effect.

The $60 million compensation fund established last December 2014 opened Sunday. The United States will administer and distribute the funds to eligible Americans, Israelis and other foreigners and their families who were not entitled to make claims under existing French programs.

“This is the fist time a Western ally in World War II has made Holocaust-related payments to survivors in Israel, the U.S. or any foreign country,” said Stuart Eizenstat, the special advisor to the U.S. secretary of state on Holocaust issues, who negotiated the agreement over nearly a year.

In return, the United States will protect France from American lawsuits related to Holocaust deportations of Jews from the country.

Israeli forces have razed to the ground several homes belonging to Palestinians in East al-Quds (Jerusalem).

Israeli forces demolished at least three apartments in the Beit Hanina neighborhood of East al-Quds on Monday, the Palestinian Ma’an news agency reported.

According to witnesses, Israeli forces used bulldozers to demolish a housing complex which contained three apartments. The Israeli forces demolished the homes with all of the families’ belongings inside.

Sources say the destruction has cut the supply of water and electricity to nearby houses and facilities in the neighborhood.

Local residents say the demolition took place although they had obtained an order from an Israeli court to halt the plan.

In an interview with the Russian-based interstate MIR TV channel, US Secretary of State John Kerry claimed the US seeks multidimensional cooperation with Russia, including both economic development and resolution of ongoing crises in Syria and Ukraine.

Kerry emphasized the important role Russia is playing in resolving the Syrian conflict and stressed the necessity of cooperation with a “major power with very capable air forces” in the interview.

“Of course, we are coordinating and will coordinate with Russia,” he said referring to the situation in Syria.

The US Secretary of State also admitted that the US “would like to be able to do more with Russia” in Syria, but said that it could be possible only if “Russia really makes a decision… to help settle the political part of the war.”

Russian and US air forces have staged joint drills to practice air safety measures in the skies over Syria, according to the Russian General Staff, which also reported that its military has begun to coordinate with Syria’s moderate opposition forces.

In the course of the drills, both the air crews and ground services of Russian and US forces drilled procedures aimed at avoiding problems in case the two countries’ military aircraft find themselves in dangerous proximity in Syria’s skies, Russian General Staff spokesman Colonel General Andrey Kartapolov said on Tuesday.

“The exercises took place at 11:00 Moscow time (08:00 GMT) [on Tuesday],” he added.

The joint drills come after Moscow and Washington signed a “deconfliction” memorandum last week to ensure air safety over Syria.

After tackling the horrors of World War II in “Saving Private Ryan” and the Holocaust in “Schindler’s List,” three-time Oscar winner Steven Spielberg shows yet again that he can take on mature content in his latest masterpiece, “Bridge of Spies.”

Set to be another Oscar favorite, in “Bridge of Spies,” Spielberg goes back to the Cold War where lawyer James Donavan — played by Tom Hanks in his fourth collaboration with the legendary director — is tasked with negotiating a prisoner swap between an American pilot Francis Gary Powers (Austin Stowell) held in the USSR and Soviet spy Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance).

The drama-thriller is based on a true story.

During a recent conference call, Spielberg spoke with The Times of Israel about how he started making historical dramas after years of blockbuster hits à la “Jaws,” “E.T.,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and many others.

Russian plane crash: Black boxes ‘show aircraft was not hit from outside’ – but terrorism not ruled out

Isis has claimed responsibility for the disaster, driving speculation in Russian media that a bomb was on board

Initial examinations of black boxes from Metrojet flight 9268 show that it was not struck by a missile, a source on the investigating team handling the recorders has claimed.

Terrorism has not officially been ruled out by investigators determining the cause of Saturday’s disaster but Egyptian and Russian politicians quickly rejected Isis’ claim of responsibility.

The group’s Egyptian affiliate, Wilayat Sinai, said it downed the plane in revenge for Russian air strikes in Syria but experts pointed out missile systems controlled by the militants only have a range of 15,000ft – half the plane’s altitude.

Austrian party expels lawmaker for agreeing with anti-Semitic Facebook post

(JTA) — An Austrian lawmaker has been fired after enthusiastically agreeing with an anti-Semitic post on her Facebook page.

The far-right Freedom Party expelled Susanne Winter on Monday evening. The party had first offered Winter the chance to resign.

“Given that up to this point in time no announcement has been made as to the resignation of Susanne Winter, she is hereby excluded from the Austrian Freedom Party with immediate effect. In addition, the FPO continues to call for her to give up her mandate (seat in parliament),” the party said in a statement.

Winter on Friday responded to an anti-Semitic post by a citizen named Oehlmann Hans-Jörg in which he said that “Zionist money Jews are the global problem. Europe, and in particular Germany, are now getting what they deserve from Zionist Jews, particularly rich Zionist Jews in the USA, for the century-long persecution of Jews in Europe. According to the Zionists, Europe, particularly Germany, should be cut off as economic competitors to the U.S.”

(JTA) — A month before Hanukkah, Israeli archaeologists say they have found the remains of the fortress from which Greeks controlled the Jerusalem Temple during the time of the Maccabees.

The remains, which were discovered recently in the Givati parking lot excavations at the City of David, in the Jerusalem Walls National Park, are believed to have been constructed during the reign of Antiochus Epiphanes (215-164 BCE), Israel’s Government Press Office announced in a news release issued Tuesday.

The findings include a section of a large wall, a base of a tower and a man-made embankment. Other findings there included sling stones and arrowheads stamped with a symbol from Antiochus’ reign that are believed to be from the Greeks’ efforts to defend the fortress from the Maccabees.

Pew survey: 57% of US Jews eat pork, Torah study grows

NEW YORK (JTA) — Do you experience feelings of peace and well-being at least once a week? Did God write the Torah? Do you eat bacon?

If these questions seem a little personal, don’t fret. They’re all part of a new Pew Research Center survey on American religion released Tuesday that shows moderate declines in religious beliefs and behavior among Americans generally, but growth among Jews in some key religious categories.

Some 847 of the 35,000 Americans in the Pew telephone survey between June and September 2014 identified themselves as Jews by religion — far fewer than the 3,475 Jews interviewed for Pew’s landmark 2013 survey of U.S. Jewry. (Unlike the new survey, the ’13 study also counted as Jews those of “no religion” who identified themselves as Jewish by ethnicity, parentage or feeling). But there’s still plenty of interesting data on Jewish beliefs, practice and voting patterns in the new survey.

Here are some of the study’s more interesting findings:

A new Islamic State video shows a Russian-speaking jihadist praising his “Sinai brothers” for “taking down” a Russian passenger jet and threatening more attacks, while both Russia and Egypt say the group doesn’t possess the means to shoot down a plane.

In the newly-released video, five Islamic State (IS, formely ISIS/ISIL) jihadists are seen sitting outside as one of them praises militants in the Sinai Peninsula for allegedly bringing down the Russian A321 passenger jet with 224 people on board.

Surrounded by four fellow jihadists, a Slavic-looking man speaking both in Russian and Arabic, addresses President Vladimir Putin, warning the Russian leader that he would regret targeting ISIS in Syria.

77% of world Jews feel secure in their countries, poll finds

Survey conducted by JCC Global shows members of Jewish communities around the world feel unaffected by security situation in Israel and see their community’s unity as more important than its connection with Israel. The world’s Jews feel secure in their countries, including in Europe: In a survey conducted among Jewish community leaders in different places around the world, 77 percent reported that their members do not feel threatened in their places of residence, including 56 percent of European Jews.
Only 21 percent said their community members felt unsafe – about half of them due to the growth in anti-Semitism, and others because of the anger towards Israel, local criminal crime, the economic situation, the immigration problem in Europe, etc.

Ahead of the 9th World Conference of Jewish Community Centers (JCC Global), which is being held in Jerusalem this week, JCC leaders were asked whether the current situation in Israel affected them. The findings were surprising: Forty-six percent said the community’s sense of security was unaffected by the current round of conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, while 35% said they felt less secure. Ten percent even reported a higher sense of personal safety recently.

BAGHDAD (AP) — Ahmad Chalabi, a prominent Iraqi politician who helped convince the Bush administration to invade Iraq and overthrow Saddam Hussein in 2003 by pushing false allegations of weapons of mass destruction and links to al-Qaeda, died Tuesday of a heart attack. He was 71.

Iraqi state TV said he died in Baghdad but did not provide further details.

Chalabi, a secular Shiite politician who lived in exile for decades, was a leading proponent of the invasion and had close ties to many in the Bush administration, who viewed him as a favorite to lead Iraq.

However, he had a falling out with the Pentagon after the invasion, and was largely sidelined by other Iraqi leaders, many with close ties to neighboring Iran. Chalabi had most recently been serving as the chairman of parliament’s finance committee, and was previously a deputy prime minister.

The first deputy speaker of parliament, Sheik Humam Hamoudi, lamented Chalabi’s death as a “big loss” for Iraq, calling him “an example of perseverance and dedication.”
