Four out of five migrants are NOT from Syria: EU figures expose the ‘lie’ that the majority of refugees are fleeing war zone

  • Some 44,000 of the 213,000 refugees who arrived in Europe were from Syria
  • A further 27,000 new arrivals on the continent came from Afghanistan
  • Britain received one in 30 of all the asylum claims made by new applicants
  • David Cameron has offered to take in 20,000 refugees but none from the EU

Only one in every five migrants claiming asylum in Europe is from Syria.

The EU logged 213,000 arrivals in April, May and June but only 44,000 of them were fleeing the Syrian civil war.

Campaigners and left-wing MPs have suggested the vast majority of migrants are from the war-torn state, accusing the Government of doing too little to help them.

‘This exposes the lie peddled in some quarters that vast numbers of those reaching Europe are from Syria,’ said David Davies, Tory MP for Monmouth. ‘Most people who are escaping the war will go to camps in Lebanon or Jordan.

‘Many of those who have opted to risk their lives to come to Europe have done so for economic reasons.’

The Egyptian army has pumped water from the Mediterranean Sea into underground tunnels used by Palestinians to transfer essential supplies to the Israeli-besieged Gaza Strip, witnesses and security officials say.

Abu Mohammad, a tunnel owner told Turkey’s official Anadolu news agency that the tunnels were flooded by “large amounts of water” on Friday “through large underground pipes that have hundreds of holes in them.”

“These pipes were extended in the past in a trench that extends across the borders between Egypt and the Gaza Strip,” he added.

Furthermore, Egyptian security officials said that the operation was aimed at ending what they claimed to be the smuggling of weapons to militants operating in the North African country’s troubled Sinai Peninsula, Germany’s DPA news agency reported.

Over the past few years, the Cairo government has launched a heavy-handed crackdown on the underground tunnels used by residents of Gaza to transfer essential supplies, including food and fuel, into the Israeli-blockaded coastal sliver.

Israeli fighter jets have carried out a number of aerial attacks in the Gaza Strip in another act of aggression against the Palestinian coastal territory.

Israeli warplanes bombarded the town of Beit Hanun in northern Gaza and a number of areas in southern Gaza late on Friday night.

A security post and several houses were damaged in the Jabaliya neighborhood. Witnesses say the Israeli warplanes also pounded the Abu Jarad district in Gaza.

Israeli media reports claimed that the attacks were conducted in retaliation for rockets fired at Israeli cities earlier in the day.

On Friday, a rocket fired at the southern city of Ashkelon was intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome missile system hours after another rocket hit an open area in the city of Sderot, the reports said, adding that the Sderot rocket caused no injuries and just damaged a bus.

Israel’s Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein has authorized the use of sniper fire by Israeli military forces against Palestinian stone-throwers in al-Quds (Jerusalem).

On Thursday, Weinstein approved Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s plan to change the rules of engagement and declare “war against stone-throwers and firebomb throwers” in the occupied Palestinian territories.

The top Israeli legal official also approved the arrest of minors and children under the age of 10 and 5 who throw stones, in addition to a fine of up to 100,000 Israeli shekels (about US $26,000).

Aida Touma-Sliman, an Israeli lawmaker for the Joint Arab List, accused the Israeli prime minister of “people hunting,” saying, “Netanyahu is apparently looking for a judicial license to kill and to murder.”

Israel’s armed forces are currently allowed to use snipers against Palestinians, who throw fire bombs or large stones. They can only target the Palestinians’ legs.

While Israeli soldiers in the West Bank are permitted to use .22 inch Luger sniper rifles, border police in the occupied East al-Quds currently respond to Palestinian stone-throwers with a range of weapons, some firing sponge-coated bullets.

Are we on the brink of another war with Hamas?

Renewed violence at the Temple Mount and growing unrest in Gaza may trigger major conflict — even though, just like last year, neither side really wants it

Friday night’s rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip do not seem to be part of the trickle of projectiles “landing in open areas” to which Israelis have become accustomed at a rate of once every month or two.

While it is true that — like in previous attacks this year — Gazan supporters of the Islamic State rushed to claim responsibility, the manner in which videos documenting the attacks were published and especially the chosen targets testify that something has changed. The launch on Friday was meant to kill.

Firing rockets at two Israeli cities, and at least one was not a crude short-range projectile, is no mean feat. While it may have been done without Hamas’s awareness, the launchers knew full well that such an act would likely get them in trouble with the authorities in Gaza.

We can thus come to a different conclusion: The volleys were launched either with Hamas’s tacit approval or with the terror group looking the other way, a combination of letting out steam and sending a message to Israel and Egypt that the situation in Gaza is turning quickly intolerable.

There is no solid intelligence at the moment indicating the above. But this is an assessment heard inside the Gaza Strip.

BEIRUT, Lebanon — Al-Qaeda’s Syria affiliate and its Islamist allies have executed at least 56 regime troops at a military airport they recently seized in the northwest, a monitoring group said Saturday.

Al-Nusra Front and the Islamists shot dead the regime fighters, who were being held as prisoners, “execution-style” inside the Abu Duhur airport, said Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

He said the killings in Idlib province had occurred earlier this week but his monitoring group — which gathers news from sources on the ground — confirmed them Saturday.

Al-Nusra is a leading member of an alliance of jihadist and Islamist forces called the “Army of Conquest” that overran the Abu Duhur military airport on September 9.

When it overran the airbase, the Army of Conquest killed dozens of regime loyalists and took others captive.

Scores of people have staged massive demonstrations across the occupied Palestinian territories to express their outrage over the Israeli military’s assaults on the al-Aqsa Mosque compound in the occupied al-Quds (Jerusalem) over the past few days.

On Friday, clashes broke out between Palestinian worshipers and Israeli troopers after the latter banned those under the age of 40 from accessing the sacred site. Israeli forces reportedly fired tear gas canisters to disperse the crowd.

Israeli forces had earlier beefed up their presence in al-Quds, deploying over 5,000 troopers to confront the worshipers. They had also closed roads in the Old City of al-Quds.

Over 17,000 migrants entered Croatia over the past three days and were essentially trapped there after Hungary sealed its border with Serbia and was working on a fence along its border with Croatia as well.

Many of the migrants seek to get through to Slovenia and Austria and eventually to Germany, their preferred destination as the EU’s biggest economy

A 41-kilometer (25-mile) barbed-wire barrier along part of Hungary’s frontier with Croatia “was finished overnight Friday,” said defense spokesman Attila Kovacs.

The remaining 330 km of the border runs roughly along the Drava river, which is difficult to cross.

Reversing an open-door policy, Croatia on Friday said it was swamped and redirected at least 3,000 migrants back to Hungary and Serbia

A five-year-old Syrian girl was found dead on Saturday and several other refugees were believed to be missing when their boat sank in an attempted crossing from Turkey to Greece, the state ANA agency reported.

The Greek coastguard said it had rescued 11 people and was looking for other survivors.

“We were told there were 26 people in the boat in total,” a coastguard spokeswoman said.

The survivors include another child and a man who was flown to hospital with hypothermia, she added.

The accident occurred east of the island of Lesbos, one of the Greek islands that have seen a heavy influx of refugees from war-torn Syria this year.

Britain’s Labor leader, controversial among Jews, claims Jewish ancestry

(JTA) — The new leader of Britain’s Labor party who has been accused of tolerating anti-Semitism said he has some Jewish ancestry.

Jeremy Corbyn told The Church Times that while his immediate family is Christian, he has a “Jewish element” in his background, the United Kingdom’s Jewish News reported.

In the interview with the Christian publication, he described himself as “not anti-religious at all,” adding, “I go to churches, I go to mosques, I go to temples, I go to synagogues. I find religion very interesting. I find the power of faith very interesting.”

Corbyn’s election earlier this month has generated unprecedented concern in British Jewry’s ranks, where many resent his Israel-critical views and endorsement of anti-Semitic enemies of the Jewish state, including Islamist militant groups Hamas and Hezbollah.

Netanyahu to address Jewish Federations after meeting Obama

WASHINGTON (JTA) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will address the annual Jewish Federations of North America General Assembly.

Netanyahu will be a featured speaker at the general assembly, taking place this year in Washington from Nov. 8-10. Netanyahu will speak on Tuesday, Nov. 10.

His appearance will follow his Nov. 9 meeting with President Barack Obama at the White House, the first meeting the two men will have had since Netanyahu launched a bid early in 2015 to kill the emerging Iran nuclear deal.

Iran and the six major powers completed the deal in July, but Netanyahu was not ready to discuss enhanced security cooperation with the United States until he was sure Congress would not kill the deal. Netanyahu did not want to be seen as giving the deal his tacit approval by agreeing to increased assistance.

U.S. to make Iran deal official in a month, no date set for sanctions relief

WASHINGTON (JTA) — The formal adoption of the Iran nuclear deal will be Oct. 18, but it is not yet clear how long it will take for Iran to satisfy conditions to relieve sanctions, top U.S. officials said.

The senior administration officials, speaking Thursday afternoon in a conference call with reporters, outlined the steps Iran must take before inspectors with the International Atomic Energy Agency, the U.N. nuclear watchdog, confirm that Iran is in compliance with the nuclear deal reached in July between Iran and six major powers.

The call to reporters came the same day that the Obama administration announced that Stephen Mull, the outgoing ambassador to Poland, would be the point person for ensuring Iranian compliance with the deal.

Among other measures, Iran must remove thousands of centrifuges from its Natanz reactor, ship overseas all but 300 kilograms of 12,000 kilograms of enriched uranium and remove the center of its plutonium reactor, the officials said.

Italian people stage an anti-Israeli protest rally. (file photo)

Hundreds of Italian people have staged a protest rally against Israel’s presence at an exposition in the city of Milan.

Waving Palestinian flags, the demonstrators rallied towards the city center on Saturday and chanted anti-Israeli slogans such as “Netanyahu, terrorist empire” and “Against imperialism and its violence, resistance now and forever.”

The angry protesters called Israel’s participation in the Expo Milano 2015 “unacceptable.”

“We decided to organize this protest to criticize the expo and especially Israel’s presence at this event, which we believe is unacceptable,” said Francesco Giordano, a member of a local Palestinian advocacy group.

Demanding justice for Palestinians, the demonstrators also urged an end to Israel’s violence against the people there.

The Palestinian Authority (PA)’s Premier Rami Hamdallah (AFP photo)

The Palestinian Authority (PA)’s Premier Rami Hamdallah is denied entry into the al-Aqsa Mosque compound upon an order by the Israeli prime minister.

Israeli forces on Friday prevented a convoy consisting of the Palestinian official, the head of the Authority’s intelligence, Majid Farraj, and the head of its preventive security, Ziyad Hab al-Reeh from entering East Jerusalem al-Quds, the Palestinian Ma’an News Agency reported.

Over the last two months, Israel has intermittently prevented Muslim presence at the compound during visits by the Israeli settlers and officials. Palestinians have complained that Tel Aviv is seeking to establish Muslim-free Jewish visiting hours.

Israeli officials have called up a few hundred police reservists to the area and on Thursday, Israel’s Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein authorized the use of sniper fire by Israeli military forces against Palestinian stone-throwers in al-Quds (Jerusalem). By so doing, Weinstein approved Netanyahu’s plan to change the rules of engagement and declare “war against stone-throwers and firebomb throwers” in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

The restrictions employed against Muslims have since Sunday led to clashes, which have raised fears of spiraling violence and prompted international calls for calm.

Reykjavik mayor withdraws Israel boycott

Icelandic capital to cancel ban on Israeli-made goods, but plans to draft new proposal for new version specifying that it apply to Israeli goods made in Palestinian territories.

The capital of Iceland’s decision to ban Israeli products is to be withdrawn, Reykjavik Mayor Dagur Eggertsson told the Icelandic Broadcasting Service RÚV on Saturday, according to Iceland Magazine.
The magazine quoted Eggertsson: “Yes, the decision was poorly prepared. In the past I have taken great pride in preparing all big decisions thoroughly. I’ll admit here and now that I am angry with myself for not doing that, and for not having prepared the decision as well as I would have liked to. This was very unfortunate.”
