Ex-Shin Bet chief: Extremist ideology growing among religious Zionists

(JTA) — The former head of Israel’s Shin Bet posted a lengthy missive on Facebook criticizing the government’s handling of Jewish terrorists.

Yuval Diskin, who oversaw the security service from 2005 to 2011, wrote in Hebrew Friday that in the West Bank, far-right Jewish extremist ideology is not a fringe phenomenon limited to “dozens of delusional youth” but is instead “setting the tone within religious Zionism.”

A “de facto State of Judea is being formed” in the West Bank, he argued, where “law enforcement is shockingly weak toward Jews” and “anarchistic, anti-state, violent, and racist ideologies are forming … and they are treated tolerantly by the Israeli legal and judicial system.”

Brad Sherman opposes Iran deal, 6th Jewish Democrat to do so

WASHINGTON (JTA) — Rep. Brad Sherman, D-Calif., said he will oppose the Iran deal, the sixth Jewish Democrat in Congress to come out against the nuclear agreement.

Sherman, a senior member of the U.S. House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee, joins Reps. Eliot Engel, D-N.Y., the committee’s senior Democrat, Ted Deutch, D-Fla., the senior Democrat on its Middle East subcommittee, Nita Lowey, D-N.Y., the senior Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee, Steve Israel, D-N.Y., who until last year chaired the House Democrats reelection campaign, and Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y, in line for his party’s Senate leadership, in opposing the deal.

There are at least nine Jewish Democrats among the 27 Congress members who so far back the deal — chief among them Reps. Sander Levin, D-Mich., the senior Democrat on the Ways and Means Committee, Adam Schiff, D-Calif., the top Democrat on the Intelligence Committee, Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill., the chief deputy whip, and Sens. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, and Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., a long-serving member of the Senate.

Congress’ Jewish caucus generally takes the lead on Israel issues and its trends are closely watched by other lawmakers. Republicans are largely against the sanctions-relief-for-nuclear-restrictions deal reached July 14 between six major powers and Iran, making Democrats the battleground in the fight over whether Congress kills the bill.

Reform leaders OK Boy Scouts at synagogues, ending 14-year ban

(JTA) — Reform Jewish leaders on Wednesday lifted a 14-year prohibition against synagogues having Boy Scouts troops.

The change of heart came in response to an announcement last Monday by the Boy Scouts of America that it was canceling its policy of banning gay adults from being scout leaders and other employees.

In 2001 — shortly after the Supreme Court upheld the Boy Scouts’ right to ban homosexual employees — the Commission on Social Action of Reform Judaism recommended that the nearly 300 Reform synagogues that sponsored or hosted Boy Scouts troops sever ties with the organization. That recommendation had remained in force until now.

Israeli officials have announced a decision to force-feed a Palestinian detainee who has been on hunger strike for nearly two months, his lawyer says.

Jamil al-Khatib said on Saturday that Israeli officials are seeking a court order to force-feed Mohammed Allaan, who has been held without charge since November 2014.

“I have informed him of this but it does not alter his intention to continue his strike,” Khatib said, adding that the activist has been refusing food for 55 days by Saturday.

According to the lawyer, Allaan was placed in intensive hospital care when his body showed signals of failure to absorb drinking water.

Global action urged

In a statement released on Saturday, Sami Abu Zuhri, the spokesman for the Palestinian resistance movement, Hamas, said that Israel’s decision to force-feed the Palestinian prisoner is a dangerous move which could endanger his life. He also warned the Israeli regime against the repercussions of the practice.

An Israeli drone has gone down in the waters off the blockaded Gaza Strip, witnesses say.

Eyewitnesses said the Israeli unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) crashed near the Sudaniyah district in northern Gaza Strip on Friday evening, the Palestine 48 website reported.

The report came after the Israeli military bombed an area near the Nuseirat refugee camp, injuring four people.

Israeli paper Jerusalem Post quoted the Israeli military as saying that its warplanes had targeted a base belonging to the Gaza-based Palestinian resistance movement Hamas.

The Israeli military also said the attack was carried out in response to an alleged rocket attack from Gaza earlier on Friday.

Jewish supremacist: Burning churches legitimate under Jewish law

Radical right wing activist Bentzi Gophstein, who has narrowly escaped charges of incitement to violence, was recorded saying that he unquestionably supports the burning of churches and ‘houses of idolatry.’

Bentzi Gophstein, head of the Lehava organization, said he supported the burning churches as a legitimate act under Jewish law during a debate on a haredi panel Wednesday. The statement, made during a summer seminar session for students at Jerusalem’s Netivot Hochma (Wolfson) Yeshiva, was first exposed on the religious news site Kikar HaShabbat.

The panel, which included prominent rabbis and political figures and was led by Rabbi Abba Turetsky, featured a heated debate surrounding the status of Christian churches in Israel that were labeled “houses of idolatry.” Gophstein, a radical right-wing activist, was asked, “Do you support burning churches in Israel, yes or no?” by Benny Rabinowitz, a writer for the ultra-Orhtodox daily newspaper Yated Ne’eman, who attended the event. Gophstein replied, citing a Maimonides ruling that churches should be burned. “Are you for Maimonides or against him?” he asked, rhetorically.

Livni: We must remember Iran is the enemy, not the US

Zionist Union MK says Israel must discuss its security needs in wake of deal, not suffice itself with ‘arm wrestling in Congress’

Zionist Union Member of Knesset Tzipi Livni on Saturday joined a growing number of officials warning Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu against further alienating the United States over the Iran nuclear deal, just days after President Barack Obama singled out Israel as the only nation that had openly opposed the agreement.

Livni, who previously served as foreign minister and Israel’s chief negotiator with the Palestinians, stressed that it was important to remember that Iran is the enemy and not the United States, Army Radio reported. She said it would be a mistake to avoid any discussion of Israel’s security expectations in the wake of the agreement.

“One cannot simply engage in arm wrestling in Congress without addressing the consequences of the nuclear deal with Iran,” Livni said at an event in Neve Monson, the radio reported.

Livni was referring to Netanyahu’s appearance before both houses of Congress on March 2, in which he exhorted American lawmakers to oppose the talks on the agreement, which would “all but guarantee” that Tehran gets nuclear weapons. The invitation to address lawmakers was issued by Republican House Speaker John Boehner, not the White House, which perceived it as a breach of protocol.

While Israeli and American leaders have insisted that disagreements between the two countries were at a policy level only, and that relations remained as close as ever, some fear that the acrimony expressed could have a direct impact on Israel’s security.

When it comes to Jewish ties, no GOP candidate trumps Trump

NEW YORK (JTA) — Among the expansive field of Republican presidential candidates on display in the party’s first debates Thursday night, Donald Trump may be the most closely connected to the Jewish people.

Trump is from New York, works in professions saturated with Jews and long has been a vocal supporter of Israel. His daughter and two grandchildren are Jewish, the executive vice president of his organization is Jewish — and Trump certainly has chutzpah.

But if you expect to find Jewish donors of influence in Trump’s network of associates, you’ll be disappointed: The billionaire’s campaign is self-financed, not donor-funded. Forbes estimates Trump’s net worth at about $4 billion; Trump says he’s worth $10 billion.

As the main attraction of the Republican debate, Trump’s trademark chutzpah was on sharp display. When asked about past references to women he dislikes as “fat pigs,” “slobs” and “disgusting animals,” Trump said he has no time for political correctness. He bragged about how Hillary Clinton dared not miss his most recent wedding because he donated to her campaign. And he refused to rule out running as a third-party candidate should someone else win the Republican nomination.

Democratic presidential candidate Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont declared his support for the Iran nuclear deal on Friday, in an announcement that followed a call from President Barack Obama.

“I had some questions that I addressed to the president, and he responded,” Sanders told The New York Times. “The answers that he gave me helped me reach the final conclusion.”

Sanders’s endorsement came hours after Chuck Schumer (D-NY), the leading Jewish Democrat in the Senate, announced his opposition to the agreement reached between world powers and Tehran last month. The deal curbs Iran’s nuclear program in return for the lifting of crippling economic sanctions on the Islamic Republic.

The Vermont senator is an independent, but caucuses with the Democrats and is running for the party’s presidential nomination.

“This agreement is obviously not what many of us would have liked, but it beats the alternative: a war with Iran that could go on for years,” Sanders said in his statement announcing his support, according to The New York Times.
