EU’s new anti-Semitism chief prioritizing online hate, implementing laws
PRAGUE (JTA) – Tackling online hate speech, implementing hate crime legislation and education are among the priorities of the European Union’s newly appointed coordinator for combating anti-Semitism.

On Tuesday, Katharina von Schnurbein presented her strategy for addressing growing levels of anti-Semitism in Europe in Prague at her first meeting with special envoys from several nations and international organizations. They included the United States, Israel, the United Kingdom and France, as well as the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
“We have very good legislation on the EU level which, for instance, prohibits Holocaust denial,” von Schnurbein told JTA. “But this legislation has only been implemented in 13 out of the EU’s 28 member states. So the European Commission is now moving to ensure proper implementation of those laws.
“There is also a very worrying spike in online hate speech. We are already in touch with IT companies so that we can come up with a common solution to this Europe-wide.”

Kuwaiti student expelled from French university over anti-Semitic Facebook posts
(JTA) — A Kuwaiti student was expelled from the prestigious Sciences Po University in Paris over anti-Semitic comments made on Facebook.
Amira Jumaa is the first student to be expelled from the institution since it was founded in 1872, according to Haaretz. She reportedly was expelled in December in a decision by the university’s disciplinary committee, which is made up of students and professors, Haaretz reported, citing a report in the French weekly Nouvel Observateur.
The expulsion was not widely publicized, and its announcement at the university was made on a piece of paper posted in a university building, according to the French report.
The Facebook posts came to light in October while Jumaa worked as an intern at the French Consulate in New York as part of a school program. She was fired immediately by the consulate and suspended from the university pending an investigation.

Netanyahu: Time to ‘reset’ relations with EU
TEL AVIV (JTA) – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called for a “reset” in relations with the European Union, accusing it and Sweden particularly of unfairly singling out Israel.
In addition to attacking Brussels for its decision to label settlement goods, Netanyahu on Thursday for the first time publicly accused the Union of building “illegal constructions” in the West Bank in an alleged bid to create “political realities” there, The Times of Israel reported.
“We have to reset our relationship with the European Union. I hope we can do this on better terms,” the prime minister told foreign journalists in Jerusalem Thursday. He added that he had recently discussed the tense bilateral ties with the union’s foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini. “I said we have to figure out a way to resolve and set things on the right course,” he said.
“There is a natural tendency in the E.U. establishment to single out Israel and treat it in ways that other countries are not being dealt with, and especially other democracies,” he said. “And I think it’s wrong. I think it should be corrected.”

Father of Palestinian teen burned alive: Demolish homes of his Jewish killers
JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israeli prosecutors called for life sentences for two Jewish men convicted of burning a Palestinian teen alive, while the teen’s father called for their homes to be destroyed.
The father of Mohammed Abu Khdeir reportedly asked during a closed sentencing hearing in Jerusalem District Court on Wednesday that the court destroy their homes as they would for a Palestinian terrorist.
“Demolish their houses, just as happens with Arabs,” Hussein Abu Khdeir said. “There should be equal penalties.”
The hearing was closed because the two men, who were found guilty in November, were minors at the time of the crime. The court is due to hand down a decision in February.

Netanyahu named Likud leader absent a primary challenger
JERUSALEM (JTA) — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was declared the leader of Likud after the party canceled its primary due to the lack of a challenger.
The Feb. 23 vote was canceled Wednesday in response to a request by the party’s comptroller citing cost. Likud will save about $1 million by canceling the vote.
Though Netanyahu was the only candidate registered, the party’s central committee originally had agreed to hold the vote, providing a blank slip for voters.
The party moved up the primary from six months before the next election to the February date.

Netanyahu to Brazil: Settler leader the only ambassador we’ll offer
(JTA) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said if Brazil won’t approve former settler leader Dani Dayan as its ambassador, Israel won’t offer another diplomat.
Israel’s Channel 2 News reported Netanyahu’s comments Wednesday.
According to i24news, Israel not having an ambassador in Brazil would represent a “de facto downgrade in relations” between the two countries.
