Dutch ex-PM: ‘War criminal’ Netanyahu should be tried in Hague

(JTA) — Former Dutch prime minister and longtime pro-Palestinian activist Dries van Agt said Benjamin Netanyahu is a war criminal who should be prosecuted during his visit this week to the Netherlands.

Van Agt, who in 2012 said Jews should have had a state in Germany instead of the Land of Israel and who in 2008 spoke at rally in Rotterdam that featured a speech via satellite by Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh, spoke about Israel’s prime minister this Monday during an interview with the NPO 1 public television channel.

“There’s a war criminal coming to this country,” said Van Agt, 85, who presided as the Dutch prime minister for five years until 1982 for the centrist Christian-Democratic Appeal party.
“The occupation and expansion… building of settlements, of occupied territory, this is according to the Rome Statute, which is… the setup… the statute on which the international criminal court is based, in so many words, a war crime,” Van Agt said in a rambling television interview. “So why should we receive someone who continues with such things, we could have sent him right away to the international criminal court, that would have been better,” he said of Netanyahu.
Van Agt has fended off accusations that he was anti-Semitic after he said in 1972, while serving as justice minister: “”I am only an Aryan” in speaking to a journalist about his intention to bring about the release from prison of Nazi prisoners for health reasons. He later said that meant to say that the release would be difficult for him to achieve because his Jewish predecessor had, according to Van Agt, tried and failed.
He also has been accused of hypocrisy in criticizing what he regards as Israel’s excessive use of force in light of his deciding vote at a cabinet meeting in 1977 in favor of an armed takeover of a train that terrorists had hijacked as a bargaining chip for negotiating the rights of Indonesians who collaborated with the Dutch colonialist authorities. Six of them died along with two hostages in the takeover.
These controversies and his frequent speeches against Israel have prompted the leaders of his party and other politicians to distance themselves from Van Agt. Former party leader Maxime Verhagen during an interview in 2008 chuckled when asked about Van Agt, adding: “Dries Van Agt represents the opinion of one man: Dries Van Agt.”
Likoed Nederland, a pro-Israel group, said in a statement Monday: “Van Agt merits no serious podium.”
During his visit, Netanyahu, who visited the Netherlands in 2011, will meet with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte and King Willem Alexander.
On Sunday, Manfred Gerstenfeld, the chairman emeritus of the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs and an expert on Dutch-Israeli ties, revealed in an op-ed in The Jerusalem Post that the only Jewish group that was invited by the Dutch Royal House to a dinner Willem Alexander hosted in 2013 for then Israeli President Shimon Peres was the far-left EAJG association. It favors employing sanctions against Israel for its settlements.

German Jewish leaders: Far-right party’s strong showing in election a ‘nightmare’

(JTA) — A far-right party in Germany finished second in voting in the political home state of Chancellor Angela Merkel, ahead of Merkel’s party, spurring concerns among Jewish leaders in Germany.

Alternative for Germany, known as AfD, with its anti-immigrant and ultranationalist platform, picked up 21 percent of the vote Sunday in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, behind the center-left Social Democratic Party with 31 percent, which retained leadership in the state. Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union had 19 percent; it was the first time that the AfD surpassed the Christian Democrats in any German state election.

The fact that the right-populist party did so well — winning 18 seats in the 71-seat legislature — is widely seen as a further indictment of Merkel’s liberal policy toward accepting refugees from war-torn Muslim countries and has set off alarm bells among Jewish leaders in Germany.

“The AfD is not an option for Germany but an indictment of Germany,” Josef Schuster, the head of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, told the German media after the results came in.

WASHINGTON (JTA) — Donald Trump Jr. retweeted an attack on Hillary Clinton by Kevin MacDonald, a psychologist notorious for his theories of Jewish manipulation and control.

The Aug. 29 tweet itself had nothing to do with Jews or the theories that have made MacDonald popular among Holocaust deniers. In it, MacDonald referred to Clinton’s interactions as secretary of state with UBS, a Swiss bank that also has contributed to the Clinton Foundation.

Trump’s father, Donald Trump, the Republican nominee for president, has sought to make an issue of allegations that Clinton inappropriately dealt with foundation donors while she was secretary of state in President Barack Obama’s first term. Clinton is the Democratic nominee.

The mayor of the French port city of Calais is urging the government to completely dismantle the notorious ‘Jungle’ migrant camp as soon as possible. She has joined hundreds of protesters rallying for the closure of the troubled facility.

Natacha Bouchart, who has served as Calais mayor since 2008, has joined French truckers, farmers, police and others calling for the demolition of the refugee and migrant camp. Bouchard estimates 9,000 immigrants are now living in the ‘Jungle’. Locals as well as drivers moving through the area complain of regular attacks by the camp’s population.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Young Hispanics, Asian-Americans and African-Americans are much more likely to trust Hillary Clinton than Donald Trump to deal with immigrants living in the United States illegally. But young whites tend to trust Trump more on issues related to illegal immigration, including securing the border.

Among young people overall, 47 percent say they think Trump would better handle securing the border, 26% say Clinton would, and 18% say neither would.

That’s according to a new GenForward survey of adults age 18 to 30 by the Black Youth Project at the University of Chicago with the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. There’s little division on which candidate would better handle immigrants in the country now without permission, with 39% choosing Clinton, 38% Trump and 14% neither.

But on all those questions there are significant divisions based on race and ethnicity.

Among young whites, more say that Trump would better handle securing the border than Clinton, by a 57% to 19% margin, while 49% say Trump would deal with immigrants who are currently living in the United States illegally, versus 31% for Clinton.

Turkey is to blame for no outcome in the US-Russia talks over the situation in Syria, an analyst says.

“Grave differences” remained between Moscow and Washington to finalize a ceasefire in the war-ravaged Muslim country, according to US President Barack Obama.

“We’re not there yet,” Obama said on the sidelines of the G20 economic summit in Hangzhou, China, on Sunday. “It’s premature for us to say that there is a clear path forward, but there is the possibility at least for us to make some progress on that front.”

Reporters had been invited by the US for a planned announcement of ceasefire by US Secretary of State John Kerry and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov but the department later cancelled it as the two failed to reach a deal.

According to Washington-based author and investigative journalist Wayne Madsen, the reason for such a failure is “because the US is giving a green light to Turkey to invade northern Syria, where the Turkish military, including Turkish armored divisions, are successfully seizing ground from both the Syrian army and the Syrian Kurdish groups.”

Madsen anticipated that “as long as the Turkish army has its military forces in Syria and [they] are acting as proxies for the Pentagon, the US sees no need to come to a ceasefire.”

Israel says that it has targeted Syrian military positions after mortar fire landed in an open area in the occupied Golan Heights.

On Sunday, Tel Aviv released a statement claiming that it had struck Syrian “cannons” during an airstrike in Syria’s Golan Heights after “mortar fire” hit an unpopulated area.

Following the incident, Israeli military spokesman Peter Lerner tweeted that the Syrian government must be held accountable for the shelling.

Tel Aviv has targeted the region several times in recent years.

On August 22, Israeli jets carried out an airstrike in the area, again claiming that the attack was in retaliation for stray fire from Syrian fighting factions that landed inside Israel.

Israeli soldiers work near a Merkava tank stationed in the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights on July 26, 2016.

Syria says Israel and its Western and regional allies are aiding Takfiri militant groups operating inside the Arab country. Moreover, the Syrian army has repeatedly seized huge quantities of Israeli-made weapons and advanced military equipment from the foreign-backed militants inside Syria.

Prime Minister Binali Yildirim says Turkey will never allow the formation of an “artificial state” of Kurdish militants near its border in northern Syria.

Yildirim said on Sunday that Ankara would not ever permit the US-backed militants of the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) to establish a “synthetic state” close to its border.

“We will never allow the formation of an artificial state in the north of Syria,” Yildirim said in a speech in the Kurdish city of Diyarbakir in southeastern Turkey, adding, “We are there with Euphrates Shield, we are there to protect our border, to provide for our citizens safety of life and property, and to ensure Syria’s integrity.”

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan recently told a press briefing on the sidelines of the G20 gathering of world leaders in China that his country would never permit the establishment of a “terror corridor” in northern Syria.

“Nobody should expect that we’ll agree to the establishment of a terror corridor along our southern border in northern Syria,” Erdogan said on September 1.

Erdogan also dismissed claims by the United States that Kurdish militants had retreated to the east of the Euphrates River in northern Syria, saying, “Right now, people say they have gone to the east but we say no, they haven’t crossed.”

The Turkish president was reacting to comments by a US military official who said on August 29 that Kurdish forces had “all” moved east of the Euphrates, more than a week after Ankara launched an incursion into northern Syria.

Top Turkish officials have stressed that the offensive in Syria will continue until the YPG and its affiliate Democratic Union Party (PYD) withdraw.

A senior UN official says Israel, which is widely believed to possess hundreds of atomic bombs, should ratify the nuclear test ban treaty within five years.

“I’m putting five years as the longest it should take now based on the positive sign that I’m seeing from Israel,” Lassina Zerbo, the executive secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBTO) Organization said Wednesday.

Zerbo met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the first time during a visit to the occupied Palestinian territories in June.

Netanyahu reportedly told Zerbo that Tel Aviv’s ratification of the UN pact “is dependent on the regional context and on the appropriate timing.”

Lassina Zerbo, the executive secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (L), speaks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem al-Quds on June 20, 2016.

The treaty, which bans all nuclear explosions, was signed in 1996, but has not entered into force because it still needs ratification by nuclear-armed signatories such as the US, China, Israel, Egypt, India, Pakistan and North Korea.

An open secret for decades, the Israeli atomic stockpile is estimated at some 200-400 warheads, though Israel refuses to confirm or deny its existence under a policy of deliberate ambiguity.

Israel is also refusing to sign the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and denying international access to its atomic arsenal.

WASHINGTON (JTA) — The Trump and Clinton campaigns issued tough-on-Iran statements in the wake of a report that alleges that negotiators allowed Iran secret loopholes in the nuclear agreement.

The Institute for Science and International Affairs, a think tank founded by a former United Nations nuclear weapons inspector, David Albright, said in a report released this week that Iran complied with most of the sanctions relief for the nuclear rollback deal when it was implemented in January, but it said, citing anonymous sources, that there were a number of exemptions.

The Obama administration strongly denied the thrust of the report, saying the deal was being implemented according to the letter. Parties to the deal were Iran, the United States, Germany, France, Britain, China and Russia.

The campaign of Donald Trump, the Republican nominee, pounced on Thursday, taking a shot at Trump’s Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, who as secretary of state in President Barack Obama’s first term helped set the stage for the deal.

With less than a year to go to secure the hearts of the French people, Marine Le Pen, the leader of far-right party National Front, is offering something no other politician has on their agenda – the choice of leaving the EU. She also promised to defend ‘French values’ and ban the burkini. TrendsEU refugee & migrant influx, Global terrorism

Giving her annual speech to the nucleus of her political support in Brachay, northeastern France, where she managed to secure the greatest percentage vote in any village in the country in the 2012 presidential election, her nationalist-conservative constituents welcomed her vision.

After announcing her ambitions to join the presidential race earlier this year, Le Pen used the UK’s June decision to leave the European Union to her advantage, promising to hold a similar ‘Frexit’ referendum if elected.

“The British had the courage to choose independence despite all the prophets of doom,” she said.

The Daesh terrorist group has reportedly banned women from wearing burqas over security concerns.

The Takfiri group had formerly made it mandatory for women to fully cover their bodies with a black veil, including their faces, during public appearances in Syria and Iraq. Women who disobeyed the orders usually faced severe punishments.

According to reports, Daesh has made a U-turn on its policy and banned women from wearing veils in its security and military facilities in Iraq’s Mosul.

The new rules follow the deaths of several high-ranking terrorist commanders who were attack by women wearing the garments.

Earlier in the month, reports surfaced that Daesh attacked some Syrian women wearing burqas citing that their eyes were too exposed.

(JTA) – Ending a long and conspicuous silence on the burkini ban in France, the president of the umbrella group of French Jews appeared to support  the ban, saying he favored limiting “political-religious” symbols.

In an interview published Monday on the Actualite Juive Jewish news website, Francis Kalifat of CRIF for the first time directly addressed the ban last month by 30 French municipalities on the full-body swimsuit favored by Muslim women seeking modesty.

Kalifat said lawmakers should “consider differentiating religious symbols from political-religious symbols.” Radical and sectarian Islam and its fanatics, he said, “are looking for ways today to destabilize the French republic with the aim of vanquishing the societal model we inhabit today.”

German ‘Nazi grandma’ again sentenced to prison for Holocaust denial

(JTA) — An 87-year-old German woman dubbed the “Nazi grandma” was sentenced to a second jail term in less than a year for Holocaust denial.

Ursula Haverbeck was sentenced Friday by a court in Detmold in northeastern Germany to eight months in jail on charges of sedition, the German Deutsche Welle news service reported.

Haverbeck claimed that Jews were never exterminated in Auschwitz. She reportedly made more offensive comments in the courtroom.

Haverbeck wrote a letter to Detmold’s mayor, Rainer Heller, saying it was “clearly recognizable” that Auschwitz was just a labor camp. She wrote her during the trial in a Detmold court of Reinhold Hanning, a former guard who served at the Auschwitz concentration camp and who was found guilty of being an accessory to the murder of 170,000 people, mostly Jews, there.

(JTA) — Rabbi Shmuley Boteach and former Playboy model Pamela Anderson wrote an Op-Ed together on what they called the “devastation” caused by ubiquitous online pornography.

Boteach, an Orthodox rabbi, and Anderson, a sex symbol also known for her role in the ’90s television series “Baywatch,” linked their piece to the latest Anthony Weiner scandal. Weiner’s wife Huma Abedin announced Monday that she was separating from him after reports uncovered a suggestive photo indicating that the former congressman was continuing to engage in the “sexting” activities that forced him to resign in disgrace in 2011.

“From our respective positions of rabbi-counselor and former Playboy model and actress, we have often warned about pornography’s corrosive effects on a man’s soul and on his ability to function as husband and, by extension, as father,” the pair wrote in the article, which appeared in The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday.

DETROIT, United States (AFP) — Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump promised African-Americans prosperity and jobs Saturday in a gently delivered speech to a black congregation in a US city famous as a symbol of economic and urban decline.

Setting aside his usual stridency, Trump adopted a humble tone, telling his audience at the Good Faith Ministries International church that he came to listen, expressing sympathy for the out-of-work young men he had seen on boarded-up Detroit streets.

“Nothing is more sad than when we sideline young black men with unfulfilled potential, tremendous potential,” Trump said, speaking from notes.

“Our whole country loses out without the energy of these folks. We’re one nation. And when anyone hurts, we all hurt together,” he said.
