Democratic candidates pledge robust ISIS fight, implicitly chiding Obama

WASHINGTON (JTA) — The Democratic presidential candidates pledged to lead the United States in the fight to crush the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria terrorist group, with each suggesting that the Obama administration has come up short.

The candidates in the debate broadcast Saturday night by CBS eagerly embraced increasing U.S. engagement and called for the absolute defeat of the terrorist group in the wake of its massive terrorist attack in Paris the previous night.

Implicit in the pledges were critiques of Obama administration policy in the face of the rise of ISIS, which critics have said has been, at least until recent weeks, feckless and deferential to other powers fighting the group.

“We have to look at ISIS as the leading threat of an international terror network,” said the campaign front-runner, Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Hillel chapter joins ‘Amherst Uprising’ protest against alleged bias on campus

(JTA) — The Amherst College chapter of Hillel joined over 50 campus groups in a coalition demanding changes to create a more “inclusive environment” on campus.

Amherst Uprising is one of a spate of collectives on campuses across the country seeking to address what members see as campus environments hostile to minorities.

The manifesto posted last week demands an apology from the elite Amherst College in Massachusetts,  and from its president, Carolyn “Biddy” Martin, for an “institutional legacy” of a number of bigotries, among them anti-Semitism.

The statement also seeks the disciplining and “extensive training for racial and cultural competency” of students behind posters on campus declaring “All Lives Matters” and “in memoriam of the true victim of the Missouri Protests: Free Speech.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (AFP photo)

A judge in Spain has issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and seven other former and current Israeli officials over a 2010 fatal raid by the Tel Aviv regime forces on a Gaza-bound aid ship.

According to reports by Spanish media, the group could be arrested if they set foot on Spanish soil, the Jerusalem Post reported on Saturday.

On May 31, 2010, Israeli commandos attacked the Turkish-flagged MV Mavi Marmara that was part of the Freedom Flotilla in the high seas in the Mediterranean Sea, killing nine Turkish citizens and injuring about 50 other people who were part of the team on the six-ship convoy. A 10th died after four years in a coma.

A UN panel that reviewed the case later denounced the Israeli attack on the vessel as “excessive and unreasonable.”

Former Israeli foreign minister, Avigdor Lieberman, Minister of Military Affairs Moshe Ya’alon and Ehud Barak, the former minister of military affairs, former interior minister, Eli Yishai, and former minister of intelligence, Dan Meridor, are among those implicated in the case.

RT goes into Aleppo airbase retaken from ISIS (EXCLUSIVE)

Published time: 15 Nov, 2015 15:48

The Syrian Army has won a crucial victory in the battle against Islamic State, lifting the blockade of Kuweires Airbase, the Syrian government’s key stronghold near Aleppo. The defense of Kweires became the symbol of unbreakable spirit of the Syrian soldiers.RT’s Lizzie Phelan managed to gain access to the airbase, just days after it was liberated.

Kuweires Airbase was besieged in 2013 and nobody believed the army would be able to defend the installation, given its conditions of poor munitions and provisions’ supply. Yet more than two years later the beleaguered unit met its liberators unconquered and with unbroken spirit.

The way to Aleppo resembles a movie in a post-apocalyptic world: many buildings along the highway are in tatters and still smoking, and burnt out military hardware is scattered along the roadsides. The Syrian Army’s operable armored vehicles that guard the crucial highway are several decades old and rusty.

At night all movement on the highway halts: Islamic State (IS, former ISIS/ISIL), militants get closer to the road and shoot in the direction of headlights of anything that passes, using mortars and domestically produced rockets.

The villages around the Kuweires are completely destroyed, as the Syrian Army had to knock the terrorists out of them one by one.

One of the suicide bombers who carried out the Paris attacks was identified Saturday by a French parliament member as Ismael Omar Mostefai.

Jean-Pierre Gorges, who is also the mayor of Chatres, wrote on Facebook that Mostefai lived in his town until at least 2012. According to Le Monde, Mostefai likely traveled to Syria in the winter of 2013-2014, where he joined the ranks of the Islamic State.

The body of the 29-year-old French national was found and identified at the Bataclan music hall where 89 people were shot dead Friday when three gunmen wearing suicide vests opened fire on spectators in the bloodiest of a string of attacks in Paris blamed on Islamists.

France’s worst ever attacks killed at least 129 people and left 352 injured, many in critical condition.

According to French media reports, Mostefai had a previous criminal record and had been flagged by French intelligence as a potential security risk since 2010.

(JTA) — France’s umbrella group of French Jewish communities, CRIF, called for “merciless war” against radical Islam.

CRIF’s unusually harsh-worded statement Saturday followed news that at least 127 people were killed in a series of terrorist attacks in Paris and its northern suburb of Saint-Denis, which French President Francois Hollande said were an “act of war” committed by the Islamic State.

“The global war against the monstrosity of jihadist fanaticism must become an absolute priority of democratic nations,” CRIF wrote in a series of messages on Twitter. “We must fight it without mercy, without relenting, in order to vanquish it.”

Israeli intelligence helping Paris attacks investigation

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israeli intelligence services reportedly are helping France investigate the Paris attacks that left at least 129 people dead.

In a statement issued Saturday night about the Paris terrorism of the previous day, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that he had “instructed Israel’s security and intelligence forces to assist their French counterparts and their counterparts from other European countries in any way possible.”

Israel’s minister of intelligence, Yisrael Katz, later clarified Netanyahu’s statement, telling reporters that intelligence cooperation among Israel, France and other European countries is “ongoing,” but that “intelligence material relevant to what happened has been relayed, and we will also deepen the cooperation.”

Katz added that the information would help the French and other countries deal with the aftermath of the attack and future attacks, Reuters reported.

Netanyahu: Same terrorism driving attacks in Israel and Paris

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the same terrorism is driving the attacks in Israel and Paris.

“In Israel, as in France, terrorism is terrorism, and standing behind it is radical Islam and its desire to destroy its victims,” Netanyahu said Sunday at the start of the weekly Cabinet meeting.

The prime minister was referencing the West Bank attack on Friday that killed a father and son, and injured five other family members, as they drove to the Shabbat pre-wedding celebration of the man’s daughter, and the attacks in Paris several hours later that left 129 people dead and injured hundreds.

“The time has come for the world to wake up and unite in order to defeat terrorism. The time has come for countries to condemn terrorism against us to the same degree that they condemn terrorism everywhere else in the world,” Netanyahu said, adding that it would be “proper” for Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas to condemn the attack in Israel in the same way he condemned the attack in France.

A day after the devastating terror attacks in Paris, Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari said his country’s intelligence services had warned governments of three countries, including France, that terrorists had chosen as primary targets.

“Information has been obtained from Iraqi intelligence sources that the countries to be targeted soon are Europe in general, specifically France, as well as America and Iran,” Ibrahim al-Jaafari said on Saturday on the sidelines of Vienna negotiations searching to put an end to the war in Syria.

Al-Jaafari did not go into detail which terrorist organization is posing the threat, but he urged a global response to Islamic State (IS, former ISIL/ISIS), which is currently controlling large areas of Iraq and Syria.

The video with the Iraqi foreign minister’s comments on the terror attacks in France has been published on the Al-Jaafari personal website (in Arabic).

French authorities have identified three terrorists out of seven killed while staging attacks in Paris on Friday. Their relatives have been detained and are being questioned. Unofficial reports suggest one of them was just 15 years old. TrendsFrance terror attacks

Among the identified terrorists who blew themselves up is a French citizen, Omar Ismail Mostefaï (born November 21, 1985). He was raised in Courcouronnes, a poor neighborhood of Paris.

Mostefaï had a criminal record of petty crimes, having been convicted eight times between 2004 and 2010, but never serving jail time.

Although Mostefaï was put on a list of people with a high-risk of radicalization in 2010, he was “never implicated in an investigation or a terrorist association,” AFP cited Paris prosecutor Francois Molins as saying.

Police are now trying to find out whether Mostefaï traveled to Syria last year. The terrorist’s older 34-year-old brother turned himself in to the police when he learnt what his relative had done. His father and four other relatives have been detained and their apartments searched.

The family of four sons and two daughters never suspected that one of them, although known for being involved in petty crimes, had become a terrorist.

One of the suspected Paris attackers, a holder of a Syrian passport found near his body, crossed into Serbia on October 7 seeking asylum, Reuters reports citing the Serbian Interior Ministry.

“One of the suspected terrorists, A.A., who is of interest to French security agencies, was registered on the Presevo border crossing on October 7 this year, where he formally sought asylum,” the ministry said in a statement.

The Presevo border crossing separates Serbia from Macedonia.

“Checks have confirmed that his details match those of the person who on October 3 was identified in Greece. There was no Interpol warrant issued against this person,” the statement added.

Greek authorities said the passport matched one used by a refugee who arrived on the Greek island of Leros on October 3, and then traveled on to Croatia and Austria.

‘We want to be safe’: Calais engulfed in tensions, locals & migrants feel threatened by ISIS

Published time: 15 Nov, 2015 09:58

While the events in Paris were unfolding, tensions started to spiral in the northern port town of Calais: a blaze began at the refugee camp known as the Jungle that houses some 6,000 migrants. Many are worried this wasn’t just a coincidence.

Some residents are opting to move out rather than put their loved ones at risk. A local family with three children have recently left their home, a neighbor of theirs told RT’s Polly Boyko.

The man, who didn’t disclose his name, added that he thinks the events in Paris and Calais are parts of the same puzzle.

“The migrants talk a lot on the telephone, they are always communicating. They use the Wi-Fi nearby…I think it’s all connected,” he said.

Many in the northern town, which receives about 100 migrants daily, echo his concerns.

A mass grave with the remains of up to 80 Yazidi women, executed by Islamic State, has been discovered on the edge of Sinjar in Iraq. The UN says abuses against the Yazidi minority, who the jihadists deem devil-worshippers, may constitute an attempted genocide.

Officials found the site of the mass grave of young women enslaved by Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL). They claimed to have witnessed the execution of dozens of Yazidis before managing to escape.

According to a local council member, the grave yet to be excavated, is thought to contain the bodies of 78 women, aged from 40 to around 80.

“It seems that the [IS] terrorist members only wanted young girls to enslave,” Miyasir Hajji told AFP. The jihadists have a reputation for using women as sex slaves – bought, sold and dumped.

The mayor of Sinjar and local Yazidis, who visited the site of the mass grave, told Reuters they saw clumps of hair, bones, money and keys, which they believed belonged to older women from the village of Kocho. The younger women were taken into sexual slavery, while the older ones were taken behind an institute in the Solagh area. Gunfire was heard shortly afterwards, according to locals who survived.

Badr Sleiman Taha, 24, from Kocho said his mother, aunt and grandmother were among those killed behind the institute.

Herzog wants ‘NATO-like’ alliance of Israel, moderate Arab states

Opposition leader says despite near-daily stabbings, Jewish state currently has a ‘unique opportunity’ for peace

November 13, 2015, 1:39 am

NEW YORK (JTA) – In the mind of Israel’s opposition leader, Labor Party (Zionist Union party) chief Isaac Herzog, the array of threats in the Middle East these days present Israel with a historic opportunity.

Yes, Palestinians are stabbing Israelis daily. Yes, Israel arguably has its most right-wing government since Benjamin Netanyahu’s first term as prime minister, in the late 1990s. Yes, Obama administration officials conceded last week that they have given up on achieving an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal during the remainder of the president’s term, which ends in January 2017.

But in Herzog’s view, the rise of the Islamic State and the threat of a nuclear Iran offer an extraordinary opportunity for a “NATO-like” alliance of Israel and moderate Arab states.

Given their common enemies and interests, Herzog says, the Jewish state can work with Egypt, Jordan, the Gulf states and others to curb the expansion of Iranian power, contain the Islamic State, facilitate intelligence sharing, and propel Israelis and Palestinians back to the negotiating table.

“Despite the fact that we’re in a terror wave of stabbings and throwings of stones and casualties and another painful moment between Jew and Arab in the Holy Land, despite all of that we must look beyond that and take steps that can change the course of history in the region,” Herzog told a group of reporters Wednesday in a meeting in Manhattan organized by the Israel Policy Forum.

White House seeks menorahs with stories for this year’s Hanukkah party

WASHINGTON (JTA) — The White House is looking for menorahs with unique stories for its Hanukkah celebration this year.

Matt Nosanchuk, the White House liaison to the Jewish community, on Nov. 11 posted an entry on the White House website soliciting ideas for menorahs, noting it was the first time that the White House was issuing such an appeal.

“We’re looking for a special and unique menorah that tells a story to be part of our candle lighting ceremony,” Nosanchuk wrote. “A story about family, about community, about the long Jewish cultural tradition in the United States, Israel, or around the world.”

The deadline is Nov. 20, and the White House will not cover transport or insurance, and contributing the menorah does not guarantee an invitation to the party. Menorahs not used at the celebration may nonetheless feature on the White House website.

Manhunt for suspected Paris attacker

French media report investigators are looking at three brothers, one of whom is on the run, as details emerge about some perpetrators of coordinated terror attacks that killed at least 129; at least two were French nationals living in Belgium.

French police have identified one of the assailants in Friday’s coordinated attacks in Paris as Ismael Omar Mostefai, a 29-year- old French national, and seven of his relatives are being questioned, sources and French media outlets said on Sunday.
New evidence that emerged on Sunday suggested that planning of the attack went beyond France’s borders. Three of the seven suicide bombers killed in the Paris attacks were French citizens, as was at least one of the seven other people arrested in neighboring Belgium suspected of links to the attacks.

According to Le Monde, Investigators are paying particular attention to three French brothers, who are believed to be directly involved in the attacks: two of them rented the vehicles in Belgium and the third has been questioned by Belgian police. AFP quoted a source as saying that one of the brothers died in the attack, another was in Belgian custody, and the third may have been one of the attackers whe blew himself up, but could “possibly” be on the run.

European rabbis: Product labeling is the face of new anti-Semitism

ATHENS – The Conference of European Rabbis (CER), which unites the Jewish religious leaders of the continent’s main states and cities, slammed the European Union on Wednesday for deciding to label products originating in the West Bank, accusing its leaders of suffering from “new anti-Semitism.”

They wondered why the EU wasn’t labeling products from Iraq and Syria as well.

The Nordstrom department store chain pulled a women’s Hanukkah sweater from its outlets and its website after it was criticized for perpetuating negative stereotypes of Jewish women.

The blue sweater has the words “Chai Maintenance” knitted on the top and “Hanukkah J.A.P.” on the bottom. J.A.P. stands for Jewish American Princess, a pejorative.

The sweater still appears on the website, but only the back, which has no writing, is visible and the page says “Product not available.” It was removed earlier this week.

A men’s version says “Mazel tov” on the top front and “Oy vey” on the back, and Happy Hanukkah on both sides. It remains on sale.

Nordstrom came under heavy criticism on its Facebook page.
