Moscow warns of response after US sends destroyer to Black Sea

American warships entering the Black Sea will prompt “response measures” from Moscow, a top Russian diplomat has warned, adding that another US aircraft carrier in the Mediterranean is clearly an attempt to show force ahead of an upcoming NATO summit.
The USS Porter (DDG-78), armed with assault cruise missiles and an Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System (primary weapon: Standard Missile 3), entered the Black Sea this week.
“American warships do enter the Black Sea now and then. Certainly, this does not meet with [Russia’s] approval and will undoubtedly lead to planning response measures,” Andrey Kelin, the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s European Cooperation Department, told RIA Novosti on Friday.
He also disapproved of the deployment of the USS Harry S. Truman in the Mediterranean ahead of the NATO summit in Warsaw in July as muscle-flexing.
“There is nothing special about the movement of US vessels in this case. We know that aircraft carriers are moving in the Mediterranean Sea and elsewhere, they have a right to do so, this is freedom of navigation,” he said.
“But in general, this is a definite increase in [Russia-US] relations and all this is done ahead of the NATO summit in Warsaw – this is a demonstration of force,” he added.

The heads of the foreign ministries of Poland, Romania and Turkey agree that European missile defense needs expansion, according to the Turkish foreign minister. “Russia’s aggressive attitude” poses a serious threat to regional security and stability, he said.
The range of such systems should be significantly broadened to maintain secure protection of the population, Turkey’s Anadolu news agency cited Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu as saying.
The Turkish FM pointed out that NATO’s missile defense (Patriot systems) is already deployed in all three countries “for defense purposes.”
“We’ve reached common ground that missile defense systems should be expanded to provide protection to all the three states and their populations,” Cavusoglu said.

Jewish economist wins Peru’s presidency, but rival won’t concede
Pedro Pablo Kuczynski carries 50.1% of vote, officials announce after 4 days of counting, but Keiko Fujimori hopes review may yet give her victory
LIMA, Peru (AP) — Former World Bank economist Pedro Pablo Kuczynski won the majority of votes in Peru’s closest presidential contest in five decades, election officials announced Thursday, even as his rival Keiko Fujimori has yet to concede defeat.
Four days after voting, electoral officials said that all ballots had been processed and Kuczynski had won 50.1 percent compared to 49.9 percent for the daughter of imprisoned ex-President Alberto Fujimori.
Supporters immediately celebrated outside Kuczynski’s campaign headquarters while the apparent president-elect made a plea to his opponent and other rival political forces for dialogue.
“We receive this virtual verdict with great humility because Peru has huge challenges ahead of it,” Kuczynski, the son of a Jewish-Polish immigrant father, told reporters in his first remarks after the tally was known. “We shouldn’t confuse dialogue with weakness. We’re going to be decisive but we’re going to work on behalf of all Peru because many Peruvians feel the train has left them behind and we want everyone to get on board.”
Even as messages of congratulations poured in from presidents around Latin America, Fujimori’s campaign seemed in no rush to recognize defeat. After electoral authorities presented their results Thursday, she left her campaign headquarters, where she was holed up in meetings all day, and returned to her home without making any remarks to the throngs of journalists waiting outside.

Trump slams GOP hold-outs, targets ‘sad case’ Romney
Presumptive nominee says Republican leadership must be ‘very strong, very smart’; repeats attacks on Clinton, Warren
MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. (AP) — Campaigning in a pair of crucial battleground states, Donald Trump bashed Democrats and Republicans alike Saturday, from presumptive presidential rival Hillary Clinton to former Republican nominee Mitt Romney, who he branded a “sad case.”
First at a convention center in Tampa, Florida, and then in an airport hangar outside Pittsburgh, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee tore into fellow Republicans who have been slow to back him, again dashing hopes among some in the party that Trump would solely train his fire on his likely general election foe.
“I’d like to see Republican leadership be very strong, very smart and you got to be cool,” he said in Moon Township, Penn., saying that Republicans risked losing seats in the House and Senate.
“If not, I’m gonna win but a lot of other people are not,” Trump said. “We are going to win either way.”

Democrats tussle over adding occupation’ to party platform
WASHINGTON (JTA) — The Democratic Party’s platform drafting committee tussled over whether to use the word “occupation” in addressing the Israeli-Palestinian issue, reflecting divisions between the Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton camps that could play out at the convention.
The Democratic National Committee held two days of open hearings this week in Washington, D.C., on the platform, inviting experts to testify. The hearings, which will also take place in other cities, got underway the same week that it became clear that Clinton had secured her position as the party’s presumptive presidential nominee.
Much of the back and forth Thursday afternoon, when the committee considered foreign policy, was about whether the committee should describe Israel’s presence in the West Bank as an “occupation.”

Sweden lashes out after lesbian romance ‘censored’ in Cartoon Network show

Sweden seems to have censored a brewing lesbian romance between two main characters in an episode of popular Cartoon Network show Steven Universe, leading its residents to launch a petition urging CN to take appropriate action.
Steven Universe, which premiered in 2013 in the US on Cartoon Network, revolves around the fictional Beach City where a boy called Steven hangs out – occasionally helping to save the world – with his friends, who are actually “Crystal Gems”: Garnet, Amethyst, Pearl and others. The interesting thing about the gems is that they can fuse to create more powerful characters. Garnet is a fusion of Ruby and Sapphire, both female gems who are very much in love with one another.
The Swedish-dubbed version of the show’s episode ‘Hit the Diamond’ about a baseball match has been altered to mute the romantic tension between Ruby and Sapphire.
For instance, this particular conversation:

The Israeli Army has barred all Palestinians from entering Israel, except for “medical and humanitarian cases.” It comes after strict measures were already taken following a fatal Tel Aviv attack.
An army spokeswoman told AFP that the border closure will last until midnight Sunday.
The UN has stated that the Israel’s step may amount to collective punishment, which is prohibited under international law, and will “only increase the sense of injustice and frustration felt by Palestinians,” spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani told a news briefing, as quoted by Reuters.

Israeli poll shows little support for Trump in Arab world
IDC survey finds just 3.8% of Egyptians, 6% of Saudis favor presumed GOP nominee, who wants ban on Muslims entering US
AP — An opinion poll of attitudes inside Egypt and Saudi Arabia conducted by Israel’s Interdisciplinary Center found virtually no support for presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump in the two Arab countries.
The survey could signal trouble for Trump if he wins the November election and sets out to devise a Mideast policy. Egypt and Saudi Arabia are two of America’s most powerful and important allies in the Arab world.
When asked who their preferred candidate was, just 3.8 percent of Egyptian respondents chose Trump. In Saudi Arabia, only 6% favored Trump.
The presumptive Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton, did better, though support was far from overwhelming. In Egypt, 35.7% of respondents chose Clinton, while in Saudi Arabia that number was 30.2%.

France’s ex-chief rabbi seeks ‘radical’ response to Israel’s ‘abominable’ gay parade
(JTA) — Several French Jewish organizations condemned a former chief rabbi of France, who called Tel Aviv’s gay pride parade an “abomination” and “attempt at moral extermination of the People of Israel.”
Joseph Sitruk, who had served as France’s chief rabbi from 1987 until 2008, made the statements last week, during a talk broadcast on Radio J, the Actualite Juive weekly reported.
“The Torah determines that homosexuality is an abomination and considers it a human failure. The danger seems to me grave enough for everyone to shout their opposition in the face of such an offense,” said Sitruk on June 3, as tens of thousands marched through Tel Aviv in its 23rd annual gay pride event. “I hope the listeners will react in a radical manner to this abomination,” Sitruk said.

‘Ali! Ali!’: Legendary boxer makes his final journey
Bill Clinton, Billy Crystal attend funeral; White House staffer reads letter from Obama, who cannot attend due to daughter’s graduation
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Muhammad Ali made his final journey through his hometown Friday — past the little pink house where he grew up and the museum that bears his name — as thousands of mourners along the route pumped their fists and chanted, “Ali! Ali!” for the former heavyweight champion of the world known simply as The Greatest.
A hearse bearing Ali’s cherry-red casket, draped in an Islamic tapestry, arrived at Louisville’s Cave Hill Cemetery in a long line of black limousines after a 19-mile drive via Muhammad Ali Boulevard that was both somber and exuberant.
“He stood up for himself and for us, even when it wasn’t popular,” said Ashia Powell, waiting at a railing for the hearse to pass by on an interstate highway below.
Ali was to be laid to rest around midday — his headstone inscribed simply “Ali” — in a private graveside ceremony, followed in the afternoon by a grand memorial service attended by more than 15,000 people, including former President Bill Clinton and comedian Billy Crystal.
Ali, the most magnetic and controversial athlete of the 20th century, died last Friday at 74 after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Greece will ‘soon’ recognize State of Palestine: Greek MPs
Greek legislators from the ruling Syriza political party have told members of Palestinian political parties that Athens intends to officially recognize the State of Palestine.
During a Saturday meeting between a Greek parliamentary delegation from the Syriza Party and political parties of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) in the occupied West Bank city of Ramallah, the Greek lawmakers confirmed that the government in Athens would “soon” recognize the State of Palestine, according to a PLC statement cited in a report by Ma’an News Agency.
However, a precise timetable for the official recognition was not specified by the visiting Greek lawmakers.
The parliament in Greece voted last December in favor of a motion to recommend that the government recognize the Palestinian State.
The voting took place during a special parliamentary session attended by Acting Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras. Despite the vote, the actual recognition has not yet materialized.
“Due to some special circumstances, the Greek recognition of the Palestinian state has been delayed, but it will come soon,” the PLC statement quoted the visiting delegates as saying.
If implemented, Greece would become the second European nation to officially recognize the State of Palestine, following Sweden’s 2014 official recognition of the state.
During their visit, the Greek lawmakers met with Fatah movement’s Azzam al-Ahmad, Qays Abdul Karim of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, Mustafa Barghouti of the Palestinian National Initiative, Bassam al-Salihi of the Palestinian People’s Party, and the Fatah-affiliated MPs Najat al-Astal, Muhib Awwad, and Abdullah Abdullah.
