Democratic debate: Bernie Sanders calls for normalizing ties with Iran
WASHINGTON (JTA) — Bernie Sanders, the Jewish senator vying for the Democratic presidential nod, called for normalizing relations with Iran.
“I think what we’ve got to do is move as aggressively as we can to normalize relations with Iran,” Sen. Sanders, I-Vt., said Sunday evening during a debate with his rivals Hillary Rodham Clinton and Martin O’Malley in South Carolina.
The NBC debate moderators launched the foreign policy section of the debate in its second hour with a request for responses to the formal implementation this weekend of the sanctions relief for nuclear restrictions deal reached last year between Iran and six major powers. On Saturday, U.N. inspectors certified Iran had rolled back its nuclear program and the United States and Europe lifted some sanctions.

Islamic State jihadists have reportedly slaughtered up to 280 people in the Deir ez-Zor province, killing “whole families” for alleged cooperation with the Syrian troops. The killings are said to have taken place a day after Russian humanitarian aid was airdropped in the region.

Pope Francis, in visit to Rome synagogue, calls for end to religious violence
(JTA) — Making the third visit ever by a pope to Rome’s Great Synagogue, Pope Francis and Jewish leaders condemned violence in the name of religion and said the extraordinary rapprochement between Jews and Catholics over the past 50 years should serve as a model for other faiths.
“Conflicts, wars, violence and injustices open deep wounds in humanity and call on us to reinforce the commitment to peace and justice,” Francis said Sunday.
“The violence of man against man is in contradiction with any religion worthy of the name, and in particular with the three great monotheistic religions,” he said. “Every human being, as a creature of God, is our brother regardless of his origins or religious belief.”

Argentine president receives Nisman daughters on anniversary of his death
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (JTA) — Argentinian President Mauricio Macri received the daughters of AMIA special prosecutor Alberto Nisman, a year after he was found dead in his apartment with a gunshot wound to the head.
Nisman’s daughters, Iara and Kala, met with Macri on Sunday at his personal weekend house, called Los Abrojos.
Sunday’s meeting with Macri is in contrast with former president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, who never received Nisman’s relatives and never expressed condolences to the Nisman family. The meeting was announced on Twitter and in the presidential public schedule.
The 20-minute meeting, during which Argentine Masorti Rabbi Marcelo Polakoff prayed in Nisman’s memory, was held without reporters present.
