Obama-Netanyahu meeting in DC to discuss post-deal environment
WASHINGTON (JTA) — President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will discuss post-Iran nuclear deal strategies when they meet Nov. 9 in Washington, D.C.
“The president looks forward to discussing with the prime minister regional security issues, including implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action to peacefully and verifiably prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, and countering Tehran’s destabilizing activities,” the White House said Wednesday in a statement.
The JCPOA is the sanctions relief for nuclear restrictions deal reached in July between Iran and six major powers.
Netanyahu adamantly opposes the deal and cut off security talks with the United States until he was certain Congress would not kill it. The Israeli leader feared that such talks would imply his approval of the agreement.

Declassified CIA missives shed light on opening of Six Day War
Classified presidential daily briefs from the 1960s reveal what US knew the first 2 days of Six Day War; ‘Arab counterclaims of 158 Israeli planes destroyed seem grossly exaggerated’.
“Since early this morning, fierce fighting is taking place between Egyptian armored forces moving towards Israel and our forces who have set out to stop them.” This was an IDF spokesman’s announcement at the opening of the Six-Day War.
Now, almost 50 years after the war, CIA documents showing what initial information the US received on the war were revealed for the first time.

GOP candidates united in disdain for Obama, support for Israel
In second Republican debate, Donald Trump takes on Jeb Bush over the war in Iraq, says he’ll ‘get along’ with Russia’s Putin
WASHINGTON — Republican presidential candidates sparred Wednesday evening over foreign policy, especially the future of the nuclear deal with Iran and the legacy of the war in Iraq. But in a debate that at times descended into personal attacks, candidates largely seemed to share complete disdain for President Barack Obama’s diplomatic legacy — and passionate support for Israel.
“I will not shake hands with, I will not meet with, and I will not agree to anything with a country that says death to us and death to Israel and holds our hostages while we sign agreements with them,” New Jersey Governor Chris Christie proclaimed in reference to Iran. He added that he would lead “an America that will be strong and resolute, and will once again be able to stick out its chest and say, ‘We truly are the greatest nation in the world, because we live our lives that way, each and every day.’”
Senator Marco Rubio, who appeared decisive in addressing foreign policy questions throughout the debate, said that, if he is elected, “our Air Force One will fly, first and foremost, to our allies, in Israel, in South Korea, and Japan. They know we stand with them, that America can be counted on.” He also promised that in addition to meeting with the leaders of Russia and China, he would meet with “those who aspire to freedom and liberty” in those states.
Restoring US might and strengthening allies was a common theme in the closing statements. Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee offered a similar endorsement in his remarks. “At the end of my presidency I would like to believe that the world would be a safe place, and there wouldn’t be the threats, not only to the US, but to Israel and our allies, because we would have the most incredible well-trained, well-equipped, well-prepared military in the history of mankind,” he said. “And they would know that the commander-in-chief would never send them to a mission without all the resources necessary, but people wouldn’t bully us anymore because they would know that that would be an invitation to their destruction.”
Senator Ted Cruz also reassured his audience that, if he is elected, “Our friends and allies across the globe will know that we stand with them.

Hungarian police fire tear gas at migrants on border
Dozens injured in clashes after refugees break through Serbia fence; plastic bottles, rocks hurled at riot police at sealed crossing
HORGOS, Serbia — Baton-wielding Hungarian riot police unleashed tear gas and water cannons against hundreds of migrants Wednesday after they broke through a razor-wire fence and tried to surge into the country from Serbia. Crying children fled the acrid smoke and dozens of people were injured in the chaos.
With their path blocked, hundreds of other asylum-seekers turned to a longer, more arduous path to Western Europe through Croatia, where officials said 1,300 had arrived in a single day — a number that was sure to grow.
On the sealed border into Hungary, frustrated men — many of them war refugees from Syria and Iraq — hurled rocks and plastic water bottles at the helmeted riot police as they chanted “Open, Open!” in English. Children and women cried as the young men, their faces wrapped in scarves, charged toward the police through thick smoke from tear gas and tires set on fire by the crowd.
“We fled wars and violence and did not expect such brutality and inhumane treatment in Europe,” shouted an Iraqi, Amir Hassan, his eyes red from tear gas and his hair and clothing soaked after being hit by blasts of water cannon spray.
“Shame on you, Hungarians,” he shouted pointing in the direction of the shielded Hungarian policemen who were firing volleys of tear gas canisters directly into the crowd.

Netanyahu to visit Russia over Putin’s Syria support
JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow to discuss Putin’s support for the Assad regime in Syria.
During the visit, which is scheduled for next week, Netanyahu will talk with Putin about “the stationing of Russian forces in Syria,” and “present the threats posed to Israel as a result of the increased flow of advanced war materiel to the Syrian arena and the transfer of deadly weapons to Hezbollah and other terror organizations,” a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office said.
On Tuesday, Putin pledged to continue military support for the Syrian government led by Bashar Assad.
U.S. State Department spokesman John Kirby said on the same day that the Russian military has had “increased activity” in Syria in the last few days.

Earlier, a number of Western media outlets reported that Russia has been creating an air base in an airfield near the Syrian city of Latakia with the US officials expressing their “concern” over reports of Russia’s alleged military presence in Syria.

Melbourne day school sexual abuse victim awarded $1 million in damages
SYDNEY, Australia (JTA) — A former student at a haredi Orthodox Jewish day school in Melbourne who allegedly was sexually abused by the principal has been awarded $1 million in damages.
Justice Jack Rush said in Melbourne Supreme Court on Wednesday that the actions taken by the Adass Israel School in helping former principal Malka Leifer flee Australia in 2008 were “deplorable and disgraceful.” The allegations of Leifer’s behavior were raised shortly after she left Australia.
The school also has been criticized for failing to contact police.
Leifer was arrested in Israel, where she is facing extradition to Australia to face 74 charges of sexual abuse against girls at the school.

The Jewish don of Latin American TV says ‘adios’ after 53 years
(JTA) — On Saturday, the Spanish language television network Univision will host the final broadcast of “Sábado Gigante.”
With 53 years on TV, the world’s longest-running variety show is an eclectic, strange mashup of a game show, a talk show and live entertainment. There are singing competitions — the poor-performing contestants are eliminated by a trumpet blast, a la “The Gong Show” — as well as lie-detector tests for husbands accused of infidelity, comedy segments and beauty contests. (Check out a montage of clips from the show’s 50th anniversary here.)
Each week, the three-hour hodgepodge is broadcast in 40 countries and watched by tens of millions of viewers. With a reach beyond the Spanish-language market — it’s been the subject of parodies on “Saturday Night Live” and “The Colbert Report” — “Sábado Gigante” is a well-known pop-culture phenomenon.
Less known, however, is that Don Francisco, the show’s Chilean creator and host, is Jewish.

Iceland capital to boycott Israeli products
(JTA) — In a move described as symbolic, the municipal government of Iceland’s capital city announced a boycott of all Israeli products.
The Reykjavik City Council passed a resolution Tuesday saying that the municipality would not purchase any Israeli goods “as long as the occupation of Palestinian territories continues,” Iceland Magazine reported.
In an explanatory memo, the council said the City of Reykjavik supports the right of Palestinians to independence and condemns “the Israeli policy of apartheid” in the West Bank and eastern Jerusalem. The resolution does not identify any products or companies it plans to boycott, and it is not clear whether the municipality currently purchases anything manufactured in Israel, according to Ynet.
Bjork Vilhelmsdottir, a councilwoman with the Social Democratic Alliance, introduced the motion.

British Parliament declines debate on anti-Netanyahu petition
(JTA) — The British Parliament declined to debate a petition that called for the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for war crimes.
The petition received more than the necessary 100,000 signatures to trigger the debate in the House of Commons before Netanyahu’s visit to Britain last week.
On Wednesday, a House of Commons’ Petitions Committee spokeswoman told the London-based Jewish Chronicle that because the petition called for action that was not permitted under international or British law, the government would take no further action.
The online petition garnered nearly 112,000 signatures as of Wednesday after being uploaded on Aug. 7 to the Parliament’s official website.
