Adelson’s Las Vegas paper endorses GOP hopeful Rubio

The Review-Journal, purchased by the Jewish magnate last year, says Florida senator is ‘best-positioned to win the White House’

A major Nevada newspaper owned by Jewish American billionaire Sheldon Adelson has endorsed Florida Senator Marco Rubio in the state’s upcoming Republican caucus. The junior senator from Florida is considered a foreign policy hawk with views close to those of the casino magnate.

Rubio last year criticized President Barack Obama for not being sufficiently supportive of Israel, and vowed last month that his first trip abroad if elected would be to Israel

Rubio finished a strong third in this week’s Iowa caucus, behind Texas Senator Ted Cruz, who claimed first place, and runner-up Donald Trump. Nonetheless, the Las Vegas Review-Journal wrote in its editorial on Friday, “at this moment, Sen. Rubio is best-positioned to advance from the primary season and allow the GOP to win the White House on Nov. 8.”

The paper, the largest in Nevada, said it had met with “several candidates from the sizable Republican field, allowing them to distinguish their campaigns, and allowing us to try to help Nevadans determine who is best qualified to advance to the general election.”

While it praised Rubio, Ben Carson, Cruz, former Florida governor Jeb Bush and Carly Fiorina for their “outstanding ideas,” the Review noted, somewhat pithily, that it had also “made many attempts to meet with businessman and Republican front-runner Donald Trump, but he could not work an interview into his schedule.” Furthermore, the paper noted, “we made it clear to candidates that they had to meet with us to gain consideration for our endorsement.”

Following in the footsteps of Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, The United Arab Emirates (UAE) stated on Sunday that it was ready to ground troops to Syria to fight Islamic State. Damascus earlier said it would send unwelcomed invaders back ‘in coffins.’

The UAE’s preparedness to participate in a ground military operation in Syria was confirmed by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar Gargash, who said that “US leadership on this” would be a prerequisite.

“We are not talking about thousands of troops, but we are talking about troops on the ground that will lead the way … that will support … and I think our position remains the same and we will have to see how this progresses,” he added, as cited by Reuters.

Earlier this week, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain said they would contribute troops for a ground operation in Syria, should the US choose to start one. The three countries are already participating in the aerial bombing campaign spearheaded by Washington. The US however has repeatedly said it would not send ground troops to fight Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) and wants the Arab nations to do the fighting on the ground.

ANKARA, Turkey — Turkey’s president lashed out at the United States a week after President Barack Obama’s envoy visited a northern Syrian town that is under the control of Syrian Kurdish forces, which Ankara considers terrorists.

In comments published Sunday, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Washington should choose between Turkey and the Kurdish Democratic Union Party, or PYD, as its partner.

That came after envoy Brett McGurk’s visit to Kobani, where the PYD’s military wing, aided by US-led airstrikes, drove back Islamic State militants a year ago. Turkey considers the PYD a terrorist group because of its affiliation with Turkey’s outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK.

Erdogan said: “How can we trust you? Is it me that is your partner or is it the terrorists in Kobani?”

In Washington, a State Department spokesman reiterated the longstanding US policy that considers the PKK “to be a terrorist organization.”

Yemen’s army has reportedly carried out two ballistic missile attacks against a military base in Saudi Arabia’s southwestern Asir region.

The possible death toll and the amount of the damage inflicted upon Saudi troops and the military base in the Monday attacks were not yet released.

Yemenis launch such attacks in retaliation against an unabated aggression by the Saudis.

The country has been under military attacks by Saudi Arabia since late March last year in a bid to bring the country’s fugitive former president, Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, a Riyadh ally, back to power.

Over 8,270 people, among them 2,236 children, have been killed and 16,015 others injured since the onset of the aggression. The strikes have also taken a heavy toll on the impoverished country’s facilities and infrastructure, destroying many hospitals, schools, and factories.

Saudi warplanes have carried out fresh airstrikes across the war-ravaged Yemen, inflicting damage and destruction on a dam and reservoir in the Arabian Peninsula country.

Saudi Arabia’s fighter jets totally destroyed a reservoir in al-Nahdin district in the Yemeni capital Sana’a on Sunday evening, Yemen’s Arabic-language Saba news agency reported.

According to the report, the reservoir, which supplied water to at least 30,000 people in the densely populated area, could store up to 5,000 cubic meters of water and had cost Yemenis $4 million.

Since the beginning of the Saudi aggression on Yemen, the reservoir had been targeted by warplanes some 20 times and sustained partial damage but on Sunday it was completely destroyed.

Saudi jets also bombarded a hospital in the province and seriously wounded a physician and a nurse. The airstrike also inflicted damage to the building and some medical devices.

Meanwhile, Saudi war machine conducted three airstrikes on a dam in the Sirwah district in the central Ma’rib Province and caused heavy damage to its structure. They also carried out attacks on some areas in the western province of Hudaydah.

Yemen has been under airstrikes by Saudi Arabia since March 26 last year. The Saudi strikes have been meant to undermine the Houthi Ansarullah movement and bring fugitive former president, Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, back to power.

Daesh Takfiris have executed 300 people in Iraq’s embattled northern province of Nineveh.

“Daesh terrorists executed 300 people by firing squad in Mosul,” said Mahmoud al-Sourji, a spokesman for Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces, on Sunday, adding that all of them were “Iraqi police personnel, army troopers and civilian activists,” Arabic-language al-Sumaria satellite television network reported.

Sourji further said that Daesh lives in a state of tension in Mosul and the mass execution confirmed the group’s fear of people’s rising in the militant-held city.

On Saturday, the terrorists publicly amputated the right hands of three teenagers accused of theft. The incident, reportedly, sparked the outrage of citizens, as the three boys were underage and the penalty was handed down by the group’s so-called Sharia Court without investigation.

Meanwhile, the Iraqi forces managed to slay a Daesh military commander, called Abu Leil, along with four of his companions in Garma district, east of the city of Fallujah in Anbar province. A day earlier, another terrorist commander, called Shobaib Abu Majd al-Kanani, was also killed along with eight other Daesh commanders in an airstrike in Nineveh.

Wreaking havoc in Iraq since June 2014, the terror group has recently been losing ground to the country’s army forces.

Hundreds of Iraqi Kurds have staged a demonstration against Turkey’s military campaign in Iraq’s Kurdish region.

People protested outside the United Nations compound in the city of Erbil on Sunday, calling for an end to Ankara’s airstrikes against Kurdish militants.

Local media said clashes erupted later between police and protesters and three police officers were injured.

This came after Turkish warplanes targeted a village in the northern province of Dohuk in Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan region on February 5 as part of Ankara’s military operations against militants of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

Ankara launched airstrikes against PKK positions in Iraq and Turkey as well as purported Daesh targets in Syria after a July 20, 2015 bomb attack attributed to Daesh terrorists left over 30 people dead in southeastern Turkey.

A shaky ceasefire between Ankara and the PKK that had stood since 2013 was declared null and void by the militants following the Turkish airstrikes against the group.

Seven suspected jihadist cell members have been arrested in Spain in a series of raids across southern provinces. The ring is being accused of funding terrorism as well as money laundering for Islamic State and Al-Nusra terrorist groups in Syria and Iraq.

The cell was also responsible for running arms, military equipment, bomb material, and electronic devices disguised as humanitarian shipments destined for the jihadist groups in the Middle East, Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz announced, confirming the arrest of seven cell members on Sunday.

Four of those detained are Spaniards of Syrian, Jordanian and Moroccan origin. Two others are Syrian and Moroccan nationals living in Spain. The national origin of the seventh ring member was not revealed.Police said that they began investigating the cell in 2014, specifying that the ringleader was in direct contact with Islamic State (formerly ISIS/ISIL) and provided “logistical support that was essential for the maintenance of terror activities” in Syria and Iraq.

Russia’s Defense Ministry has slammed NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg, labeling as ‘nonsense’ his comments that the Russian air operation in Syria is causing tensions and undermining the peace process in the country.

The NATO Secretary General made the controversial statement on Friday when he arrived at the EU defense ministers meeting in Amsterdam.

“The intense Russia air strikes, mainly targeting opposition groups in Syria, are undermining the efforts to find a political solution to the conflict… also causing increased tensions and violations of Turkish airspace,” Stoltenberg said.

The comments that the Russia air operation is the source of tensions in Syria is “nonsense,” Major General Igor Konashenkov, Russia’s Defense Ministry spokesman, said on Sunday.

BEDFORD, New Hampshire (AP) — Marco Rubio’s uneven debate performance just days before Tuesday’s New Hampshire primary has emboldened a trio of governors seeking to stem his rise in the Republican race for president. But if Rubio’s rivals can slow him in New Hampshire, they are likely to leave the GOP with a muddled mix of establishment contenders and no clear favorite to challenge Donald Trump and Ted Cruz.

At the heart of the battle between Rubio and Chris Christie, John Kasich and Jeb Bush is whether the freshman Florida senator has the experience and policy depth to serve as president — or whether he’s simply a well-spoken lightweight. Christie unleashed withering attacks against Rubio in Saturday’s debate, and the New Jersey governor tripped up Rubio by calling him out in real-time for his reliance on rehearsed talking points.

The morning after, Christie declared the Republican contest a changed race.

“There was a march amongst some in the chattering class to anoint Sen. Rubio,” Christie said on CNN’s State of the Union. “I think after last night, that’s over.”

Christie and his fellow governors need that to be the case, given that they’ve staked their White House hopes on New Hampshire. Without a strong showing, each will face enormous pressure to drop out from Republican Party leaders eager to rally around a single candidate who can challenge Cruz and Trump, the top-two finishers in the lead-off Iowa caucuses.

Twitter: 125,000 accounts suspended for terror threats, most ISIS-related

(JTA) — Twitter said it has suspended over 125,000 accounts “for threatening or promoting terrorist acts, primarily related to ISIS.”

“We condemn the use of Twitter to promote terrorism and the Twitter Rules make it clear that this type of behavior, or any violent threat, is not permitted on our service,” the social networking service reported Friday on its blog.

Twitter said it has increased the size of the team that reviews reports of abuse and that has reduced response time to such abuse on the app. It also said that was partnering with organizations working to counter extremist content online.

“As an open platform for expression, we have always sought to strike a balance between the enforcement of our own Twitter Rules covering prohibited behaviors, the legitimate needs of law enforcement, and the ability of users to share their views freely – including views that some people may disagree with or find offensive,” Twitter said.

In a statement, the government said all applications for export permits would be considered on a case-by-case basis.

“We’ll engage with Iran step-by-step, (with) open eyes, because we still have a lot of concerns about the role of Iran in the region,” Dion said in Ottawa.

Former Nazi, 93, to be third Auschwitz guard to face trial this year

(JTA) — A 93-year-old former Nazi guard at Auschwitz will go on trial in Germany in April — the third such case to be tried in 2016.

A German court announced on Friday that the ex-Waffen SS guard, whose name has not been released, is fit to stand trial, Agence France Press reported.

The defendant, who worked at the death camp in Nazi-occupied Poland between Nov. 1, 1942, and June 25, 1943, is being charged as an accessory to murder. The German court, in Hanau, said that at least three trains carrying deportees arrived at the camp on his watch.

“Of the deportees, at least 1,075 people were cruelly and maliciously killed in the gas chambers after their arrival in Auschwitz,” the court said in a statement, according to AFP.

When Ted Cruz slams Trump for ‘chutzpah,’ should Jews be offended or honored?

Ted Cruz, the Texas Republican senator running for president as an anti-establishment maverick, has once again been accused of making Jews collateral damage in attacks on his insider rivals.

Cruz’s accusers detected the whiff of anti-Semitism in his broadsides against neoconservatives and his mocking of real estate magnate Donald Trump’s “New York values.”

Now, he’s getting scored for his use of the word “chutzpah.”

A cleaning service in the Israeli city of Tel Aviv faces criticism for its pricing scheme that varies based on the ethnicity of the housekeepers.

In what has been described as “blatant racism,” the flyers circulating in an affluent neighborhood offers a “solution” to hiring “illegal foreign workers,” for those who don’t want to hire an “Arab cleaner for security reasons”.

“Are you tired of hiring illegal foreign workers and getting fined? Are you tired of employing according to the law and being sued by temporary workers? There is a solution,” the ad reads.

The flyers offer “legal only” cleaners and lists the different prices.

The Hanau court made the announcement on Friday, without revealing the name of the accused, AP reported.

It was only said that the perpetrator, who is charged with being an accessory to murder, used to work at the Auschwitz camp in occupied Poland between November 1, 1942 and June 25, 1943.

JTA — Asked about diversity in Hollywood last week, the Coen brothers defended to the Washington Post their history of making movies about Jews and Minnesotans.

The Oscars So White controversy, #OscarsSoWhite, may reflect a real problem, the film writing-directing-producing duo agreed: Money drives commercial movies, people who invest money want more of what has worked in the past and it’s daunting for minorities to break into that cycle.

But the brothers balked at the notion that film creators bear personal responsibility for promoting diversity, arguing that you write what you know.

“Take any particular actor or writer or filmmaker, and you go, ‘Your movies should be more this or more that or more the other thing.’ The only sane response is that you can only write what you can write. You can’t sit down and say, ‘I’m going to write something that follows the dictates of what the culture thinks should be happening, in terms of cultural diversity in storytelling.’ To be honest with you, that’s completely lunatic,” said Joel Coen.

“We actually write movies in which the characters are Jews or Minnesotans,” said Ethan Coen.
