Syria? Ukraine? Putin, Obama to meet on separate issues
US, Russian leaders to meet in New York just days after Netanyahu flew to Moscow; powers disagree on topic of discussion.
Reuters, 09.25.15, 09:43
US President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet in New York next week at a time of high tension in Europe and the Middle East, but the Kremlin and the White House disagreed on Thursday over the top priority for the talks.
The White House insisted the meeting would focus on eastern Ukraine, where Russian-backed forces are fighting the Kiev government, prompting tough sanctions that have damaged Russia’s economy.

Moscow, however, said the main focus would be on Syria, where Russia has built up its military forces in recent weeks with combat aircraft, tanks and other equipment in support of President Bashar al-Assad.

Australian Jewish lawmaker chides PM over rapprochement with Iran
(JTA) — An Australian Jewish lawmaker called on Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to reverse the nation’s current policy of rapprochement with Iran.
In a statement issued Monday, Michael Danby, a federal Labor member of parliament representing Melbourne Ports, said that Turnbull “can be a friend of Israel or a friend of the dangerous Iranian regime. He cannot be both.”
Danby has placed advertisements in local media demanding Turnbull order Foreign Minister Julie Bishop to “halt and reverse this slide towards appeasement of the hardline, bellicose regime in Tehran.”
Bishop in recent months has visited Iran, signed an intelligence-secret sharing agreement with Iran, and apparently offered to allow Iranian consulates in Sydney and Melbourne.

UK party leader Jeremy Corbyn to address pro-Israel event
(JTA) — Jeremy Corbyn, the newly elected leader of Britain’s Labor Party who has been accused of being anti-Israel, will address a pro-Israel event.
Corbyn will speak next week at the Labor Friends of Israel dinner, his office confirmed Thursday to The Jerusalem Post. Some 400 people, including about 30 members of Parliament, are scheduled to attend the dinner, which traditionally hosts the Labor Party’s leader.
He has called Palestinian terror groups Hamas and Hezbollah “friends,” and recently defended an Anglican minister who posted anti-Semitic conspiracy theories online. Corbyn also has publicly endorsed a blanket arms embargo on Israel and the boycott of Israeli universities involved in weapons research.

Israel OKs harsher punishments against rock throwers
JERUSALEM (JTA) — Police will have more leeway to open fire under harsher measures against rock throwers approved by Israel’s Security Cabinet.
The new measures, which were approved at a meeting of the Security Cabinet on Thursday in Jerusalem, also include those who throw firebombs and shoot fireworks at police and civilians, the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement.
Last week, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called for the more stringent measures following an uptick in violence on the Temple Mount and throughout Jerusalem.
Under the new measures, open fire orders have been “sharpened,” according to the statement. Police “will be permitted to open fire – and they will know that they have the right to open fire – when they face danger to any lives,” according to the statement, quoting Netanyahu.

Egypt further besieging Gaza by flooding border: Hamas
Palestinian resistance movement Hamas says Egypt is further besieging the Israeli-blockaded Gaza Strip by flooding the border area, calling on Cairo to call off the project.
Senior Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh made the remarks during a speech to commemorate the Eid al-Adha (the Feast of Sacrifice) in the southern Gaza city of Khan Yunis on Thursday.
“Why are they (the Egyptians) digging those trenches and those water pipes around Rafah [border crossing]? … We are telling our Egyptian brothers: Stop this project. We will do our duty against those who besiege Gaza and plot against it,” Haniyeh said.
Over the past few weeks, Egyptian military bulldozers have been digging through the sand along Egypt’s border with Gaza in an attempt to flood underground tunnels used by Palestinians to transfer essential supplies, including food and fuel, into the besieged coastal sliver.
Earlier this month, witnesses said the tunnels were submerged by water from the Mediterranean Sea through underground pipes with holes on them.

Marine Le Pen to stand trial for Muslim-Nazi comparison
In 2010 speech, French National Front leader compared Islamic street prayers to occupation of French territory
September 22, 2015, 11:18 pm
PARIS — A top official in the French far-right National Front party says its leader, Marine Le Pen, will stand trial over comments she made in 2010 comparing Muslim street prayers to an occupation of French territory.
Wallerand de Saint Just, Le Pen’s former lawyer and a ranking member of the party, confirmed the judicial decision on Tuesday to send Le Pen to trial on charges of inciting racial hatred. The party is known for its anti-immigration, anti-Islam views.
Saint Just said it was a question of freedom of speech.
“Political leaders must be able to speak without being afraid of being brought before a judge,” he said. In July 2013, Le Pen was stripped of her European Parliament immunity over the comments.
Referring to massed Muslim prayer outside, Le Pen told an event in Lyon five years ago: “For those who like to talk about World War Two, to talk about occupation, we could talk about, for once, the occupation of our territory… It is an occupation of part of the territory, suburbs where religious law is applied. Sure, there are no armored vehicles, no soldiers, but it is an occupation nonetheless and it weighs on residents.”

The inflammatory episode of the satirical cartoon, created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, was supposed to attack Trump’s immigration policies and mocked his oft-repeated promise to build a wall between the US and Mexico.

Trump rally incident, Carson anti-Muslim remarks spur civility call by 2 Jewish groups
WASHINGTON (JTA) — Two Jewish groups pleaded for greater civility in political discourse after the loyalty of American Muslims was called into question during the Republican presidential campaign.
The Anti-Defamation League in a statement Monday cited an interview with Ben Carson, a physician and candidate for the nomination, who said in an interview that a Muslim should not be president. The ADL also noted that Donald Trump, the front-runner in the GOP race, failed to condemn a man at a rally who disparaged Muslims.
“Dr. Carson’s statement directly contradicts the Constitution and the values embodied in it,” ADL National Director Jonathan Greenblatt said in a statement. “In America, personal characteristics – whether race, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity or religion – should have no bearing on person’s ability to serve.”

Anti-Semitic 9/11 truther resigns from Greek goverment
Politician notorious for racist and homophobic remarks forced to step down 24 hours after receiving ministerial posting
September 24, 2015, 8:00 am
A junior minister in the new Greek government stepped down less than 24 hours after being appointed as outrage erupted Wednesday over anti-Semitic and homophobic remarks attributed to him in the past.
Dimitris Kammenos, a lawmaker from the nationalist Independent Greeks party who had been named junior infrastructure minister, sparked uproar earlier this year by comparing the EU to Auschwitz.
He is also accused of peddling an anti-Semitic conspiracy theories claiming that 2,500 Jews employed in New York’s World Trade Center “skipped work” on the day of the September 11, 2001 attacks.
Kammenos had been one of five members of the right-wing party named to the government by Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, which was also the junior party in his last administration.
As outrage over the nomination mounted, Tsipras stepped in to phone Independent Greeks leader Panos Kammenos — the new defense minister — to ask him to verify the allegations against his namesake Dimitris Kammenos, a government source said.
