Poroshenko to visit Israel for first time as Ukraine president
KIEV, Ukraine (JTA) — In a move that may anger Russia, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is reportedly scheduled to visit Ukraine soon and host its president in Jerusalem.
Ukraine’s ambassador to Israel, Hennadii Nadolenko, announced the plans for the visits in an op-ed published this week ahead of Ukraine’s 24th independence day, on Aug. 24.
“We expect in the near future a visit by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Kiev, and by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko to Jerusalem, in a new milestone in bilateral relations that will further deepen cooperation between the two countries in all spheres of mutual interest,” Nadolenko wrote in his op-ed, which was reproduced on Wednesday by the news site evreiskiy.kiev.ua.
Resisting American and Russian pressure, Israel under Netanyahu has remained tight-lipped and neutral on the bloody conflict that, after Ukraine’s 2013 revolution, erupted between that country and Russia. That year, Ukraine’s former president, Viktor Yanukovych, was swept from power by revolutionaries who accused him of being a corrupt Kremlin stooge.

Israeli strikes in Syria prove deadly
(JTA) — At least one person was killed by Israeli air strikes in Syria following the firing of rockets into the Golan Heights and the Galilee.
The Israel Defense Forces said Friday that it targeted the cell that launched rockets at northern Israel from Syria on Thursday, and that at least four people were believed to have been killed a car some six miles inside Syria in territory held by the Syrian army.
“We were monitoring this cell,” an unnamed IDF source was quoted by Israeli media as saying Friday. “This is an Islamic Jihad cell directed by Iran.”
A Syrian military source said Friday that one person was killed. “The enemy aircraft struck a military position in the area of Quneitra at 11:30 p.m. (20:30 GMT Thursday), martyring one and wounding eight soldiers,” said the source quoted by the official Syrian news agency SANA.

(JTA) — President Barack Obama will speak directly to the North American Jewish community about the Iran nuclear deal via a live webcast.
The webcast, scheduled for Aug. 28, is being co-sponsored by The Jewish Federations of North America and the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations. The organizations sponsored a similar webcast earlier this month on the deal with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The deal negotiated between Iran and six world powers, including the United States, would lift economic sanctions in exchange for the Islamic Republic curbing its nuclear program.

In letter defending Iran deal, Obama pledges increase in aid to Israel
(JTA) — President Barack Obama promised Democratic lawmakers that the United States will increase missile defense support for Israel and continue to pressure Iran economically if his administration’s nuclear deal with Tehran goes through.
Obama said in a letter, dated Aug. 19 and addressed to New York Democratic Rep. Jerrold Nadler, that if Iran rushes to build a nuclear weapon, “all of the options available to the United States — including the military option — will remain available,” the New York Times reported Friday.
The president also said in the letter, which the Times obtained, that the United States will uphold sanctions targeting Iran’s non-nuclear activities, such as its support for Lebanon’s Hezbollah group and what Obama calls Iran’s “destabilizing role in Yemen.”
The letter emphasizes U.S. support for Israel, saying Obama has “consistently viewed Israel’s security as sacrosanct.”

Israeli regime forces abduct 18 Palestinians in West Bank
The Israeli regime forces have carried out several night raids in the occupied West Bank, abducting at least 18 Palestinians from their homes.
Various sources said two of the Palestinians had been kidnapped near Tulkarem, three in Nablus, two in Ramallah, four near Bethlehem and four near al-Khalil (Hebron), among others.
An Israeli military spokesperson claimed that all the Palestinians were seized from their homes for committing “illegal activity.”
Palestinian sources said one of the abducted men in Nablus was Amjad Abdul-Salam Hanani, aged 25. Hanani was detained after Israeli forces raided his home in Beit Dajan village west of Nablus. Hanani was reportedly taken to Huwwara military site south of Nablus.
Occupation forces also abducted three young men from Kufr Qaddum village west of Qalqiliya, after ransacking their homes.

Israel warplanes bomb Syria’s Quneitra: Israeli media
Tel Aviv’s warplanes have bombed an area in Syria’s southwestern province of Quneitra after the regime’s military claimed four rockets fired from the Syrian soil hit northern Israel.
The fresh airstrikes against Syria came after the Israeli military said in a statement earlier on Thursday that “four rockets were launched from the Syrian Golan Heights, landing in the Upper Galilee” mountainous area near the Lebanese border and the Israeli-occupied side of Golan.
“No injuries have been reported” due to incident, according to the statement.
The Israeli army also released a statement, saying, “This was the work of (Palestinian) Islamic Jihad…and we consider the Syrian government responsible for the firing and it will suffer the consequences.”

US Ambassador: Israel blocking discussions to strengthen security
Dan Shapiro says Israel should start discussions with the US now to obtain increased military assistance for the next ten years while reassuring Israel: ‘military option still on the table.’ At a time when it is no longer possible to conceal the fierce confrontation between the Prime Minister’s office and the White House in Washington, US ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro is walking on a tightrope. But even Shapiro, using every possible diplomatic term, does not hide the discord between the two countries.
“We need to recognize that there is disagreement between us, a deep disagreement about something very serious and important to both of our security interests. It’s not a comfortable situation for good friends to be in,” said Shapiro during an exclusive interview in Ynet’s studio. He suggested starting “serious and professional” talks immediately after the nuclear agreement with Iran is approved by Congress.

Crimea Reform Jewish leader thanks Putin in post-annexation meet
KIEV, Ukraine (JTA) — During a meeting with Vladimir Putin, a leader of Reform Jews in Crimea said his community’s situation has improved since Russia annexed the peninsula from Ukraine.
Anatoly Gendin, chairman of the Ner Tamid Reform Synagogue in the Crimean capital of Simferopol, thanked the Russian president Monday for what Gendin described as Russian authorities’ attentiveness to the requests of Crimean Jews on restitution and other matters, and the rule of law in the disputed territory.
“After years of fruitless appeals to Ukraine, this year saw the resolution of the issues of returning to us Simferopol’s Talmud-Torah, the former religious school for boys,” Gendin told Putin. The get-together took place in Yalta, at a roundtable meeting between the president and leaders of minority communities. Gendin added that a framework agreement for restitution was reached with Russian authorities, including for a former synagogue in Yevpatoria.
Russia invaded Ukraine last year and annexed the Crimean Peninsula following a referendum of residents that showed majority support for the move. Ukrainian Jewish leaders, including Ukrainian Chief Rabbi Ya’akov Dov Bleich, have condemned the annexation, which prompted the former rabbi of Ner Tamid, Misha Kapustin, to leave in protest to Slovakia.

France’s far-right National Front boots founder, Jean Marie Le Pen
(JTA) — The executive bureau of France’s far-right National Front party voted to oust the movement’s founder, Jean-Marie Le Pen, and strip him of all official titles.
The vote Thursday evening by the bureau followed the decision last month by French prosecutors to charge Le Pen, 87, for genocide denial, which is forbidden in France, in connection with his statement that the Holocaust was a historical detail.
Le Pen, who has had multiple convictions for inciting racial hate against Jews and other minorities, last year entered into an open dispute with his daughter, Marine Le Pen, who as successor as party president has attempted to rehabilitate the National Front’s reputation in mainstream French society after decades of blatant xenophobia.
But the party, France’s third largest, would not immediately say why Le Pen, who had been its honorary president, was ousted.

Israel deploys Iron Dome over prisoner death fears
Israel has deployed a battery of Iron Dome missile system in the occupied Palestinian territories for fear of possible attacks from Gaza amid deterioration of the health conditions of a Palestinian hunger striking prisoner.
Israeli media said Thursday that Tel Aviv has rushed to deploy its missile interception system near the southern port city of Ashdod as health conditions of Mohammed Allan, a Palestinian prisoner who has refused food for more than 65 day, get worse.
Moreover, the Israeli army placed a second anti-missile battery near the city of Beersheba.
It came after the Islamic Jihad in Gaza threatened a harsh response if Allan, a member of the resistance movement, dies while in Israel’s custody.
Palestinian sources said Allan fell into a coma again on Thursday, but some reports said he has regained consciousness.

Israel suspends hunger striking Palestinian’s detention
The Israeli regime has freed a Palestinian prisoner who has been on hunger strike against his incarceration without charge or trial.
Israel on Wednesday suspended the detention order against Mohammed Allan, releasing him in a move that his family and friends hailed as a victory.
“I feel very happy,” said his brother, Amid Allan. “I hope that my brother… will rise from his bed in healthy condition, as happy as he used to be when they took him from his house.”
Meanwhile, Allan’s lawyer said his client remains unconscious.
Israel’s ruling has not addressed what would happen to Allan if he recovers, saying only he can petition for his release if his condition improves.

Spanish public broadcaster accuses Jews of promoting Satanism
(JTA) — A Spanish public broadcaster accused Jews of promoting Satanism.
State-owned RTVE aired “From the Inferno-The Jewish People: Propagator of the Satan Cult” last month as part of its weekend “A la Carta” program.
Following an opening featuring ominous music, a gravel-voiced announcer quotes from Jacob Frank, an 18th-century Jew from Poland who had been excommunicated by his community for his heretical kabbalistic interpretations.
“The Jews first propagated the cult of Lucifer in several secret satanical societies,” the announcer continues. “Through black magic, the Israelites called on the powers of darkness with demonic rational.”

Egypt reportedly seizes 4 senior Hamas naval commandos heading to Iran
(JTA) — Egyptian intelligence operatives reportedly abducted four Palestinians who are believed to be senior Hamas naval commandos on their way to Iran for training.
The four Gazans were on a bus traveling from the Gaza border with Egypt to the Cairo airport when they were taken Wednesday, the Times of Israel reported. The Palestinians had crossed into Egypt during a short period in which the Rafah border crossing was open.
A Gaza Interior Ministry spokesman said in a statement Thursday that the Palestinians were kidnapped at gunpoint in the northern Sinai and that Gaza officials had asked Egypt’s Interior Ministry “to establish the circumstances of what happened and demand that the Egyptians work to protect the victims and release them.”
Hamas naval commandos are believed to have received sophisticated equipment from Iran, including underwater scooters that can travel long distances, and are believed to have undergone intensive training there.

US: IAEA ‘in no way’ allowing Iran to self-inspect nuke site
After secret side deal emerges, State Department says ‘that is not how the IAEA does business’
The State Department on Thursday said “in no way” did the UN atomic watchdog agree to let Iran inspect its own nuclear facilities, rejecting revelations of a secret side deal between the Islamic Republic and the International Atomic Energy Agency.
The Associated Press reported Wednesday on a previously undisclosed side deal between Iran and the IAEA that would allow Tehran to use its own inspectors to investigate a site it has been accused of using to develop nuclear arms at least a decade ago. The IAEA wishes to investigate the site in order to learn more about Iran’s past activities there.
State Department spokesman John Kirby dismissed the report, saying in “no way” would the UN nuclear agency cede its oversight to Iran. “That is not how the IAEA does business,” Kirby said in a statement, according to Reuters.
Responding to the report on the side deal, Olli Heinonen, in charge of the Iran investigation as IAEA deputy director general from 2005 through 2010, told AP on Wednesday he could think of no similar arrangement — a country essentially allowed to carry out much of the probe of suspicions against it.
The report, based on a document seen by the AP, newly riled Republican lawmakers who have been severely critical of the broader agreement to limit Iran’s future nuclear programs, signed by the Obama administration, Iran and five world powers in July.
