Report: Israel to open diplomatic mission in Abu Dhabi

(JTA) — Israel is reportedly set to open a diplomatic mission in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates.

Citing an unnamed senior official, Haaretz reported Friday that the mission would be accredited not to the UAE government, but to the International Renewable Energy Association, an international organization headquartered in Abu Dhabi. The mission is due to be inaugurated in the coming weeks.

Dore Gold, the Israeli Foreign Ministry director general, was in Abu Dhabi Tuesday for a meeting of the IRENA Council.

According to Haaretz, countries are typically represented in IRENA by a diplomat at their embassies in Abu Dhabi. None of IRENA’s 145 member states has a mission accredited solely to the organization.

The mastermind of the November 13 terrorist attacks in Paris was planning more attacks targeting Jews, schools and transport system, media reports say. He also mocked EU’s open border policy that allowed him to enter as a refugee.

Abdelhamid Abaaoud, a Belgian citizen of Moroccan origin and Islamic State extremist who was behind the massacre in a concert hall and near the stadium in Paris, told his cousin, Hasna Ait Boulahcen, “they would do worse (damage) in districts close to the Jews and would disrupt transport and schools,” according to a witness statement cited by the French Valeurs Actuelles weekly magazine. This information was later confirmed to Reuters by sources close to the investigation.

Abaaoud approached his cousin two days after the attacks and asked to hide him, while he was planning new terrorist acts. He also promised to give Boulahcen €5,000 ($5,289.50) so that she could buy two suits and two pairs of shoes for him and his accomplice, who has not been identified yet.

The terrorists planned to use the suits to blend into the crowd and “look the part” during a planned attack on Paris’ commercial district La Defense, French media reports.

Paris prosecutor Francois Molins confirmed that the extremists indeed plotted an attack on La Defense.

Dhuicq said that he shares Russia’s stance that “Islamic State [IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL], Al-Qaeda, Jabhat al-Nusra are all our enemies and should all be stricken.”

“But, unfortunately, the French president is following the American one and they’re starting to believe that you have good and bad Islamists. That’s the main threat to Syria we have today,” he stressed.

The French MP said that the negotiations between Hollande and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Thursday were essential to both countries’ fight against terrorists in Syria.

A Turkish fighter jet launched a missile at a Russian bomber on Tuesday well ahead of the Su-24 approaching the Turkish border, the chief of Russia’s Air Force said. The bomber remained on Turkish radars for 34 minutes and never received any warnings.

The attack on the Russian Su-24 bomber was intentional and had been planned in advance, Viktor Bondarev, the chief of Russia’s Air Force, announced Friday, calling the incident an “unprecedented backstab.”

The commander shared with the media previously unknown details of what happened on Tuesday.

On November 24, a pair of Russian Sukhoi Su-24 tactical bombers took off from Khmeimim airbase in Latakia at 06:15 GMT, with an assignment to carry out airstrikes in the vicinity of the settlements of Kepir, Mortlu and Zahia, all in the north of Syria. Each bomber was carrying four OFAB-250 high-explosive fragmentation bombs.
