UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has welcomed the Syrian army’s recapture of Palmyra from Daesh terrorists, expressing hope that the Damascus government will try to rebuild and protect the UNESCO-listed city.

Addressing a press conference in the Jordanian capital, Amman, Ban said “the extremist terrorists, they have been not only killing brutally people, they have been destroying human civilizations.”

“We are encouraged and fortunate” that Syrian soldiers regained control of Palmyra, said the UN chief, stressing he was also encouraged that Syria’s government “will try to not only preserve and protect, but try to restore” the site.

In another development, Russian President Vladimir Putin offered felicitations to his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad on the liberation of the ancient city of Palmyra after weeks of army operations against Daesh terrorists.

After liberating the ancient city of Palmyra, the Syrian army has vowed to press ahead with counter-terror military operations and drive Daesh terrorists out of their major strongholds, particularly Raqqah Province.

In a statement read out on state TV on Sunday, the General Command of the Syrian Army and Armed Forces hailed the victory against Daesh in Palmyra as the beginning of the terror group’s collapse in the entire Arab state.

It added that Syrian armed forces, backed by popular defense groups and Russian air cover, managed to restore “security and stability” to the UNESCO-listed city following a series of “precise and effective” operations.

With Palmyra under control, Syrian soldiers are determined to step up their anti-Daesh offensives on various fronts “on top being Dayr al-Zawr and Raqqah,” two provinces in Syria’s east and north, respectively, the statement said.

The Syrian army also vowed “to tighten the noose on the terrorist group and cut supply routes … ahead of their complete recapture.”

Palmyra’s liberation dealt “a severe mortal blow” to Daesh Takfiris, said the General Command, emphasizing that this achievement proves “our brave army, aided by the friends, is the only effective force capable of fighting terrorism and eradicating it.”

Earlier in the day, Syrian forces retook full control of Palymra after some four weeks of fierce fighting with Daesh terrorists near the city, located in the western province of Homs.

One of the main reasons Russia has a “bad” global public image is the ongoing information war being waged by Anglo-Saxon media, President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said, while blaming Turkey’s leadership for a deadlock in relations.

Peskov made his remarks in an interview with Russian channel TVC that aired on Saturday. The fairly frank assessment was disclosed while he was speculating on why it was so hard for Russia to improve its international image. Peskov added that he believes both Moscow and Washington have suffered as a result of the infowar.

Violent riots continued for a second night in the southern Stockholm suburb of Alby, known for its significant immigrant population, RT’s Ruptly agency reports. Protesters set fire to cars and pelted police and emergency services with rocks and pyrotechnics.

On Thursday night, police were patrolling the suburb, which is home to large Syrian and Armenian diasporas, as well as more recent Iraqi refugees, when a rock flew through the back window of their parked car.

As officers searched for the culprits, the rioters set fire to tires on a public bridge, and poured gasoline over several cars, before lighting them up. When fire crews arrived they were also showered with projectiles.

Netanyahu defends morality of IDF in wake of Hebron incident

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the morality of Israel’s military in the wake of a soldier shooting a prone assailant in the West Bank city of Hebron.

“Any challenge to the morality of the IDF is outrageous and unacceptable,” Netanyahu said Sunday at the start of the weekly Cabinet meeting. “The soldiers of the IDF, our children, maintain high ethical values while courageously fighting against bloodthirsty murderers under difficult operational conditions.”

video published Thursday by the Israeli human rights group B’Tselem showed an Israeli soldier shooting a Palestinian attacker in the head while he lay unattended on the pavement. The incident took place shortly after the Palestinian and another assailant stabbed an Israeli soldier in the area. The other assailant was immediately killed, while the wounded assailant was felled.

The Israeli regime is under fire for a secret plan to renew the permission for the immigration of members of a Jewish tribe in northeastern India to the occupied Palestinian territories.

Earlier this week, Ksenia Svetlova, an opposition member of the Knesset (Israeli parliament), wrote a letter to Immigrant Absorption Minister Zeev Elkin denouncing Tel Aviv’s recent decision to bring 700 Indian nationals to Israel.

Svetlova said the move contradicts the regime’s latest measure to prevent the immigration of members of the Ethiopian Jewish community over budgetary considerations.

“It turns out there is a budget. While the Ethiopian Jews are being left behind, quietly and secretly hundreds of members of the Bnei Menashe community, who identify as descendants of one of the 10 lost tribes, are being brought over,” she said.

While the Ethiopian citizens are living in dire conditions, the Indians “whose Jewishness has yet to be clarified, are being brought over with urgency,” she said.

The newcomers will be settled in illegal settler units in the occupied West Bank settlements, the Knesset member said, adding, “And all this is happening away from the public eye.

The Bnei Menashe say they have descended from Jews banished to India in the eighth century B.C.

Tony Blair has said that “many millions” of Muslims hold a viewpoint that is “fundamentally incompatible with the modern world.”

Rejecting arguments that Isis is simply “tens of thousands of brainwashed crazies,” he continued:  “[Isis] does not seek dialogue but dominance. It cannot therefore be contained. It has to be defeated.”

To mitigate against such attacks, the ex-PM argued for “active on-the-ground military support” for Arab armies, stating that Isis “have to be crushed.”

He also called for the creation of a pan-national anti-terror force, saying: “We must build military capability able to confront and defeat the terrorists wherever they try to hold territory. This is a challenge for the West.”
