Saudi Arabia has acknowledged that the US-led anti-ISIS coalition has held a “political” discussion about a potential ground troop deployment in Syria. Riyadh’s statements have been criticized by Damascus as destructive and a threat to regional security.

In an interview with Reuters, an aide to Saudi Arabia’s defense minister, Brigadier General Ahmed Asseri, confirmed that defense ministers from the anti-Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) coalition debated placing ground troops on the ground in Syria during a ministerial meeting in Brussels last month.

“It was discussed two weeks ago in Brussels,” Asseri said, clarifying that the discussions took place on the “political” level only without going into details of a potential “military mission.”

A Saudi official says the kingdom and the US discussed the possibility of a ground incursion in Syria two weeks ago but they have not made a decision.

“It was discussed two weeks ago in Brussels,” Brigadier General Ahmed Asseri, an aide to Saudi Arabia’s defense minister, said on Monday.

“It was discussed at the political level but it wasn’t discussed as a military mission,” Reuters quoted him as saying in an interview.

Saudi Defense Minister Mohammad Bin Salman Al Saud met his counterparts from the US-led coalition which has been carrying out airstrikes inside Syria since September 2014, Asseri said.

“Once this is organized, and decided how many troops and how they will go and where they will go, we will participate in that,” he said.

“We need to discuss at the military level very extensively with the military experts to make sure that we have a plan,” Asseri said.

The Syrian government has warned against Saudi Arabia’s attempts to undermine a cessation of hostilities agreement that recently came into effect across the war-hit country.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Monday that remarks by Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir about a plan B in Syria are clearly aimed at derailing the truce.

“What Adel al-Jubeir says … about a plan B regarding the current developments in Syria is merely a delusion in the mind of the Saudi regime,” a Syrian Foreign Ministry official said in the statement, adding, “Jubeir’s statements are … an attempt to thwart the cessation of combat operations.”

It also stressed that recent statements by the Saudi minister demonstrate the kingdom’s “destructive role” in Syria.

Jubeir’s comments are “lies meant to boost the morale” of Saudi-backed militants who have suffered setbacks in recent weeks in different parts of Syria, it noted.

Saudi Arabia is among the regional countries known as the main supporters of the militants fighting the Syrian government forces.

The Saudi foreign minister on Sunday said Riyadh will consider an alternate plan if it becomes clear that Syria and Russia are not serious about the ceasefire.

Turkey’s ‘provocative’ military actions could jeopardize Syria ceasefire – Russian military

Turkey’s “provocative” military buildup on the border and shelling of the Syrian territory could thwart the truce and disrupt the peace process in the Arab Republic, said the head of the Russian ceasefire monitoring center Lt. Gen. Sergey Kuralenko.

Turkey is strengthening its military positions on the border with Syria and is concentrating armored vehicles in the area, Lieutenant General Kuralenko said, denouncing these moves as “obviously provocative steps that could lead to a breakdown of the ceasefire and the peace process in the Syrian Arab Republic.”

The Russian military has examined footage taken by a Russian TV crew near the Syrian city of Tel Abyad located not far from the Turkish border, which demonstrated Ankara’s military “organizing firing positions and concentrating armored vehicles near the border,” Kuralenko said.

Meanwhile Turkish artillery fired at least 50 rounds at alleged Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) targets north of Aleppo as part of the US-led coalition’s offensive, according to local media reports.

Elkin: Palestinain Authority collapse is imminent

‘The collapse of the PA is not a question of if but when,’ says immigration absorption minister, claiming ‘most of the candidates to succeed Abbas are not “electable” and would not defeat Hamas in elections.’ Minister of Immigration Absorption Ze’ev Elkin (Likud) asserted on Monday that the days of the Palestinian Authority, as well as the Oslo Accords, are numbered.
“There’s no point in continuing this artificial resuscitation of the PA, and we should prepare a proper tombstone for the grave, as well as for the Oslo Accords. The PA was born with Mahmoud Abbas, who initiated and pushed Oslo, and the PA will disappear with Abbas when he goes,” Elkin said.

Israeli military forces have fatally shot a young Palestinian man and injured more than a dozen others amid fierce skirmishes with residents of the Qalandiya refugee camp in the occupied West Bank.

Witnesses said hundreds of Israeli soldiers and special forces raided the camp, located 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) north of al-Quds (Jerusalem), early on Tuesday and clashed with Palestinian youths.

The violence escalated after an hours-long gun battle erupted between some residents of the camp and the Israeli forces, who fired tear gas canisters and used live munitions against Palestinians homes.

A 22-year-old Palestinian man, identified as Iyad Omar Sajdiyah, sustained gunshot wounds to his head, and subsequently died. He was a student at the Faculty of Media in al-Quds University.

At least 15 Palestinians and one Israeli soldier were also injured during the imbroglio.

Russia has suggested that a federal state may be a suitable government model to preserve Syria’s unity and sovereignty.

“If as a result of talks, consultations and discussions on Syria’s future state order… they come to an opinion that namely this (federal) model will work to serve the task of preserving Syria as a united, secular, independent and sovereign nation, then who will object to this?” said Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov during a press conference in Moscow on Monday.

The United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura has announced the reconvening of peace talks between warring factions on March 7 on condition that a current cessation of hostilities generally holds.ntinue.

Israel has abducted more than a dozen Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and in the Gaza strip as part of its increasing crackdown on the residents of the two enclaves.

Israel’s military announced Monday that its forces arrested two brothers on charges of carrying out gun attacks on Israeli settlers and troops in the occupied city of al-Khalil (Hebron) over the past months.

A statement identified the brothers as Nazar Fizel Mohamed Badie, 23, and Akram Fizel Mohamed Badie, 33. It claimed that Nazar was involved in an attack on November 6 on Israeli settlers near the Ibrahimi Mosque in al-Khalil . It also alleged that Akram fired on a group of soldiers near the shrine on January 3, seriously wounding the Israeli forces in the area.

The two are also accused of firing on an army checkpoint in southern al-Khalil on January 3.

Officials in the Gaza strip also reported multiple arrests in the enclave in the course of the past 24 hours. Local media said at least 11 Palestinians were arrested by Israeli forces since Sunday with most of them being fishermen working on the Mediterranean waters close to Gaza’s coastline.

A list was released on the media containing the names of those detained by Israel. There was no immediate statement from the Tel Aviv regime on the arrests made in the besieged enclave.

A leading preacher at a mosque in the Danish city of Aarhus has been filmed advocating death to adulterers, infidels and apostates. Authorities have repeatedly failed to shut down the mosque, which has supplied more ISIS recruits than any other in Denmark.

Filmed for the documentary ‘Mosques behind the Veil’, broadcast on the state-funded TV2 channel, the hidden-camera footage shows a room, in which the bearded imam Abu Bilal Ismail is holding a lesson in front of a blackboard.

“If a married or divorced women engages in fornication, and she is not a virgin, she should be stoned to death. If someone violates their marriage, either man or woman, they commit adultery and they should be killed by stoning. If the woman is a virgin, what should the punishment be?” asks Ismail.

“The lash,” replies a chorus of high-pitched voices. Later footage shows that the preacher is addressing a room of women, with their small children playing, and sat at their feet.

Ismail then moves onto the treatment of apostates and non-Muslims.

Sanders keeps his Judaism in the background, irking US Jews

The Democratic senator has not made Israel a priority, not has he developed relationships with Jewish groups or leaders; ‘Being Jewish is very important to us, but Bernard is not particularly religious. He doesn’t go to synagogue often,’ says his brother Larry.

NEW YORK – As Bernie Sanders headed toward victory in New Hampshire, observers noted the barrier he was about to break: Sanders would become the first Jewish candidate to win a major party presidential primary.
But instead of the burst of communal pride that usually accompanies such milestones, the response from American Jews has been muted. One reason: The Vermont senator, the candidate who has come closer than any other Jew to being a major party presidential nominee, has mostly avoided discussing his Judaism.

Arab MK Ayman Odeh: Israel murdered Arafat

(JTA) — The leader of Israel’s Joint Arab List party has accused the Israeli government of murdering Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat in 2004.

Ayman Odeh, who has been championed as a moderate and spoken about the need for Jews and Arabs to work together, said in an interview Monday that the Shin Bet domestic intelligence service was responsible for the Palestine Liberation Organization founder’s death at age 75, the Times of Israel reported.

Odeh made the allegation during an interview on Israel’s Channel 2, saying that when Avi Dichter, now a Likud Knesset member, was head of the Shin Bet, he “sent the people” who murdered Arafat.
