Republican senator vows to pummel radical Islam, ‘never abandon’ Israel, as he begins run for the White House
June 1, 2015, 10:15 pm
South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham kicked off his presidential campaign on Monday and quickly put Israel at the forefront of his electioneering with a string of messages on his Twitter account declaring his support for the Jewish state.
“To our friends in Israel, I will never abandon you. I will always stand firm in supporting the one and only Jewish state,” Graham tweeted, only minutes after officially launching his candidacy.
“Our ally Israel is at risk as a result of Obama’s failed leadership. We share values, we share democracy, & our friendship is unbreakable,” read the following tweet.
He also emphasized US foreign policy and made clear his position on the possibility of a nuclear armed Iran, saying that “the biggest threat of all is the nuclear ambitions of radical Islamists who control Iran.”

Germen FM calls for removal of Gaza blockade
German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier has called for the removal of Israel’s eight-year-long blockade on the Gaza Strip.
More action to rebuild and improve Gaza’s troubled economy “requires the opening of crossing points,” said Steinmeier during a rare visit to Gaza on Monday.
Removing the blockade will also decrease the risk of renewed escalation in the region, he noted.
“The troubled situation in Gaza demands of us to think about concrete steps to improve daily life there — without which, I am afraid, the situation is escalating,” he added.
During his trip, Steinmeier visited areas destroyed by Israeli fire in eastern Gaza and inaugurated an expansion at a UN school.
Gaza has been blockaded by Israel since 2007, a situation that has caused a decline in the standard of living, unprecedented levels of unemployment, and unrelenting poverty.
The 1.8 million Palestinians of the Gaza Strip are living in what is called the world’s largest open-air prison as Israel retains full control of the airspace, territorial waters, and border crossings of the territory.

Dutch government issues travel warning against violent Jewish settlers
THE HAGUE, Netherlands (JTA) – The Dutch government issued a travel warning that cautions travelers against violent Jewish settlers.
The travel warning was placed online last month on the website of the Dutch central government for the Palestinian Territories.
“There are security risks for traveling all over the West Bank including east Jerusalem,” the warning reads. “Be alert when traveling there. Demonstrations and violent incidents occur regularly. Jewish colonists live in illegal West Bank settlements and organize demonstrations regularly around and on the road. These colonists are sometimes violent. At times, these colonists throw stones at Palestinians and international vehicles so be alert when traveling around settlements of Jewish colonists, especially in the hills around Nablus and Hebron.”
In referencing violence by Palestinians, the text states: “Palestinians demonstrate regularly against occupation in various places,” adding that “these demonstrations sometimes involve violence. There are always Israeli soldiers present during demonstrations. Avoid demonstrations. Recently, there have been violent incidents in the border area between east and west Jerusalem. They are aimed at Israelis. Be alert in those areas and avoid public transportation.”

Sheldon Adelson hosting private meeting to stem BDS tide on campuses
(JTA) — Sheldon Adelson will host a private meeting in Las Vegas of Jewish philanthropists and organizations aiming to counter rising anti-Israel activity on college campuses.
The meeting to brainstorm and fund strategies will be held this weekend at Adelson’s Venetian casino, the Forward reported. Joining Adelson as hosts are Hollywood entertainment tycoon Haim Saban, Israeli-born real estate developer Adam Milstein and Canadian businesswoman Heather Reisman.
Among the Jewish organizations invited are Hillel, StandWithUs, the Anti-Defamation League and the Jewish Federations of North America. The self-described “pro-Israel, pro-peace” J Street U, which opposes the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, was not invited.
The philanthropists initiated the meeting amid the growing BDS drive on campuses. In the past year, student governments at 15 U.S. universities have adopted resolutions calling for their schools to divest from companies deemed to be complicit in Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory.

Yeshiva students try to block Christians from King David’s Tomb
JERUSALEM (JTA) — A group of yeshiva students tried to prevent Greek Orthodox Christians from entering King David’s Tomb in the Old City of Jerusalem.
Monday morning’s incident was the second time in two days that Jewish students attempted to block access to the site, which is holy to Jews, Christians and Muslims. The students were dispersed peacefully by police.
Christians say the site, which Jews believe is the final resting place of King David, is the site of Jesus’ Last Supper.
Police arrested dozens of Jewish protesters at the site last year ahead of Pope Francis’ visit.
