Hamas condemns dropped FIFA bid as missed opportunity
PA can’t be trusted after giving up on effort to oust Israel from world soccer, terror group says; soccer chief Rajoub mocked on social media
May 31, 2015, 9:07 am
Hamas lashed out at Palestinian soccer chief Jibril Rajoub over the weekend for abandoning the bid to expel Israel from FIFA, the International Federation of Association Football, calling it a squandered opportunity that went against mainstream Palestinian opinion.
The terror group maintained that the retraction raised questions about whether the PA would follow through on its promises to lodge war crimes charges against Israel with the International Criminal Court, and end its security cooperation with the Jewish state.
Rajoub was also vilified as a “traitor,” a “loser” and an “Israeli collaborator” on Palestinian social media, with users calling on the soccer chief to be fired from his post, according to the Yedioth Ahronoth daily, and various mocking political cartoons surfacing online.
Hamas criticized both Rajoub and the Palestinian Authority, dubbing the non-event a missed opportunity, with spokesman Husam Badran telling followers on Twitter Friday that the move was “contrary to the general trend of the Palestinian people.”
“After this retreat, how can the Palestinians trust the Palestinian Authority to take Israel to the International Criminal Court or to end security cooperation?” a Hamas statement said.

Israel approves tougher punishment for stone-throwing
Published time: May 31, 2015 23:29
Israel’s Cabinet of Ministers has approved a bill toughening penalties for stone-throwers, who from now on may face a sentence of up to 10 years in prison for attacking police and targeting public transport.
A draft law was introduced by former centrist justice minister Tzipi Livni after a wave of Palestinian protests in occupied East Jerusalem in 2014. The first version approved by the parliament allowed a sentence of up to 20 years of imprisonment for purposely throwing a stone to cause bodily harm.
However, Israel’s new justice minister Ayelet Shaked complained that such cases would probably be handed down because it’s difficult to prove whether there was intent to inflict injury, especially in cases where the stones are thrown during mass street protests.
The evasion of penalties is possible in the current situation, as the law requires proving that the stone-thrower’s intentions were deliberate.

Saakashvili ‘insulted his country’ by renouncing Georgian citizenship – president
Published time: May 31, 2015 16:18
The Georgian president has said his fugitive predecessor insulted his country by renouncing his Georgian citizenship in order to become a governor in Ukraine.
“I do not understand his disgraceful behavior,” Georgy Margvelashvili said on Sunday at the Georgian Police Day celebration. “With this decision, Saakashvili insulted our country and the presidential institution. There are values that have to be more important than career, and among them, the citizenship of one’s country.”
The president’s words were echoed by Georgia’s Defense Minister Tina Khidasheli, who said Saakashvili “showed everyone his so-called devotion to Georgia,” adding “now everyone can see he doesn’t care about the citizenship of his own country.”

HRW: New evidence Saudi-led coalition uses cluster bombs in Yemen
Human Rights Watch has published new evidence alleging the Saudi Arabian-led coalition in Yemen has been using internationally-outlawed cluster bombs. The organization says innocent civilians have been targeted in the raids.
The New York-based organization visited the Saada province in the north of Yemen this month in order to compile its report. Human Rights Watch says it managed to document the use of three types of cluster munitions in the country.
“The Saudi-led coalition and other warring parties in Yemen need to recognize that using banned cluster munitions is very likely to harm civilians,” said HRW’s senior emergencies researcher Ole Solvang.
“These weapons can’t distinguish military targets from civilians, and their unexploded submunitions threaten civilians, especially children, even long after the fighting,” he added.

GENEVA — US Secretary of State John Kerry broke his leg in a bicycle crash Sunday, apparently after hitting a curb, and scrapped the rest of a four-nation trip that included an international conference on combating Islamic State.
Kerry was in stable condition and in good spirits as he prepared to return to Boston for further treatment with the doctor who previously operated on his hip, State Department spokesman John Kirby said. He said X-rays at a Swiss hospital confirmed that Kerry fractured his right femur.

Liberman: Government ‘burying head in the sand’ on Gaza
As Hamas builds border road it says will help fight Israel, former FM says Netanyahu ‘insists on remaining deaf’ to terror group’s threats
May 30, 2015, 11:34 pm
Yisrael Beytenu leader Avigdor Liberman accused the Israeli government on Saturday of “burying its head in the sand” after news came out that Hamas is building a new road near the Israeli border with the Gaza Strip, which it says it will use to attack Israel in the future.
Liberman, in a post to his Facebook page, said Hamas’s statements were “akin to a shout on a megaphone to the prime minister, who insists on remaining deaf.”
The former foreign minister said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon would be held responsible for any disaster Hamas’s preparations might bring about.
In recent days, heavy construction equipment has been operating on the Palestinian side of the border in the northern Strip, several hundred meters from the security fence. Construction work is taking place across from the Israeli community of Nahal Oz.
Former Hamas Interior Minister Fathi Hammad said Saturday the road was intended “to create for ourselves convenient opportunities to attack the Zionist enemy.”
