Israeli jets struck several sites in northern Gaza on Sunday, as Israel blamed Hamas for launching a missile into Ashkelon and ordered all Gazan border crossings to be closed. The Palestinians say a pro-Islamic State group is trying to provoke a war.

The IDF Spokesperson’s Unit said the Air Force has hit a number of “terror infrastructure sites” in the northern Gaza Strip, the Jerusalem Post reports. This was in direct response to a rocket fired on Saturday from Gaza, which exploded outside of Israel’s southern Ashkelon region in an open space. There were no reports of injuries or damage.

It is the second time in days that Gaza has been bombed after obscure militants launched unguided missiles into Israel, with a similar scenario unfolding Thursday night. In both cases, the Omar Brigades, a radical Salafist group that has pledged allegiance to Islamic State (formerly ISIS/ISIL) claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Hamas, which is the dominant Palestinian group in Gaza, has claimed that the Salafists are trying to spark another major conflict in the region to seize power. Hamas has reportedly hunted down and killed a leader of the rival group, while a Twitter account thought to be run by the Omar Brigades said Sunday that the latest strike was “in protest” against the imprisonment of their fellow jihadists in Gaza.

However, Israel has said it will not take into account who exactly is responsible for attacks from a Hamas-controlled territory.

Netanyahu condemns renewed rocket fire on Israel

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned a rocket attack from Gaza on Israel, the third attack in two weeks.

“Israel holds Hamas responsible for all firing from the Gaza Strip at our territory. I have not heard anyone in the international community condemn this firing; neither has U.N. said a word. It will be interesting if this silence continues when we use our full strength to uphold our right to defend ourselves. Let it be clear: The spreading of hypocrisy in the world will not tie our hands and prevent us from protecting Israel’s citizens. Thus we have acted; thus we will act,” Netanyahu said Sunday at the beginning of the weekly Cabinet meeting, less than a day after the attack.

Rockets were fired from Gaza at southern Israel on Saturday evening. At least one landed in an unpopulated area of Ashkelon. No damage or injuries were reported. Local residents reported hearing the explosion.

In response the Israel Defense Forces fired on what it called in a statement “terror infrastructure” in the northern Gaza Strip. Hits on the target were confirmed, according to the IDF.

Israeli fighter jets have carried out a number of aerial attacks against the Gaza Strip in yet another act of aggression against the blockaded coastal territory.

Palestinian sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the airstrikes struck multiple areas in the northern Gaza Strip in the early hours of Sunday. There were no immediate reports about the possible casualties and damage from the Israeli attacks.

The airstrikes came hours after the Israeli military claimed that a rocket fired from Gaza hit an open area near the city of Ashkelon, located 13 kilometers (8.1 miles) north of the Gazan border, on Saturday night. No injuries or damages were reported from the alleged rocket fire.

A day earlier, Richard had told the Israeli news website Ynet that he did not mean to say that Orange was pulling out of Israel for political reasons.

At least 44 people have been killed in airstrikes by the Saudi-led military coalition in Yemen’s capital, Sana’a, according to the Houthi-run news agency Saba.

“More than 44 citizens were martyred and 100 others including women and children, according to preliminary figures,” the agency initially reported. Later figures from a Health Ministry official suggest there were at least 180 people wounded.

Among the dead there were at least 20 civilians, according to a medic working at the scene cited by AFP. Civilians from buildings near the strikes’ target also reportedly comprised most of those injured.

The attacks hit a Houthi rebel military headquarters. The Saudi-led military conducted four airstrikes in the early morning hours, and the casualty count was initially reported as much lower than the above figures.
