U.S. commerce secretary visits her Jewish roots in Ukraine

(JTA) – U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker visited the Ukrainian village where her Jewish ancestors lived in the 19th century.

Marina Poroshenko, the wife of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, accompanied Pritzker on her visit Tuesday to Bolshi Prytsky, 55 miles southeast of Kiev, the news agency Regnum reported.

During her working visit to Ukraine, Pritzker also visited a Jewish school in the town of Belaya Tserkov, located 43 miles west of Bolshi Prytsky, according to the report, which was based on information given to Regnum by Geoffrey Pyatt, the U.S. ambassador to Ukraine.

“The students’ thirst for knowledge and optimism about the future was inspiring,” Pritzker said about the visit to the school.

Israeli forces have shot and killed another Palestinian in the city of al-Khalil (Hebron), the occupied West Bank.

The shooting occurred on Wednesday near the illegal Israeli settlement of Kiryat Arba after Israeli forces claimed the Palestinian was about to attack a soldier at a military post, Palestinian news agency Ma’an reported.

“Israeli soldiers shot 11 live bullets at the youth, let him bleed there and put a knife in his hand,” Ma’an quoted witnesses as saying.

Local activist Imad Abu Shamsieh also confirmed the account, adding that the youth was left on the ground while Israeli forces prevented bystanders from getting close to him.

Meanwhile, media reports said a Palestinian was wounded by Israeli forces who claimed he had attacked an Israeli settler with a knife in the Gush Etzion settlement in the West Bank on Wednesday.

Amnesty International has censured the Tel Aviv regime over killing Palestinians with intentional lethal force and without justification in the occupied West Bank.

The Britain-based human rights organization, in a report released on Tuesday, made reference to at least four incidents in which Palestinians were deliberately shot dead by Israeli forces. The victims posed no threat at all, and simply lost their lives in what were described as extrajudicial executions, according to Amnesty.

It added that injured Palestinians were in some cases left bleeding to death on the ground, and were denied medical assistance in flagrant violation of laws that prohibit torture and other forms of mistreatment.

The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) says over 140 more Palestinians have sustained injuries during the new clashes with Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank.

Errab Foqoha, the spokesman for the al-Bireh-based PRCS, said a total of 143 Palestinians were injured during Tuesday skirmishes in the West Bank.

According to the PRCS spokesman, at least 22 Palestinians were shot by live rounds, 50 were hit by rubber-coated steel bullets, 61 suffered excessive tear gas inhalation, and 10 suffered injuries after being directly physically assaulted.

Tensions have been running high in the occupied territories between the Israeli regime and Palestinians over the past several weeks.

The latest wave of tensions was triggered by Israel’s imposition in August of restrictions on the entry of Palestinian worshipers into the al-Aqsa Mosque compound in East al-Quds (Jerusalem).

The Russian Air Force has conducted 71 sorties targeting 118 terrorist targets in Syria over the past 24 hours, including an Al-Nusra Front command center, the Defense Ministry reports.

The number of sorties has risen due to the increased amount of confirmed intelligence information on Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) facilities, Major-General Igor Konashenkov told journalists on Wednesday.

The strikes hit targets in Idlib, Homs, Hama, Aleppo, Latakia and Damascus provinces.

Russian jets have bombed hidden, as well as non-operational, terrorist military facilities.

An Al-Nusra Front command center located in the province of Homs has been destroyed, Konashenkov said. The make-shift control center, arranged in a two-story building, had four jeeps parked nearby.

RT’s Lizzie Phelan and her crew report from Palmyra in direct sight of Islamic State militants, who are holding positions among the ruins of the world heritage site. With the terrorists weakened by Russian airstrikes, the Syrian Army is preparing for an offensive to retake Palmyra.

The important UNESCO world heritage site has been under the control of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) since May. RT’s crew are the first among international TV journalists to report from the area, with IS fighters visible on a nearby hill.

© Stringer© Stringer / Reuters Islamic State evolved from the Arab Spring and gained momentum due to the duplicity of certain world powers, the head of Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) has told a meeting of top security heads of ex-Soviet states (CIS) in Moscow on Wednesday.

There are world powers that are using Islamic State (IS, former ISIL/ISIS) as a kind of “terror battering ram” to ensure their interests in Asia and Africa, said FSB director Aleksandr Bortnikov. In pursuing their goals with IS, these countries have put the world on the verge of a global religious and civilizational crisis, he added.

The outcome of this global conflict could be disastrous, Bortnikov stressed

The EU might change “forever” unless the nations unite and stop the influx of refugees, former Australian PM Tony Abbott told a crowd in London, warning that unless western nations “stand up” for themselves, a “catastrophic error” is on the cards.

Addressing listeners during a speech honoring former UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher at London’s Guildhall, Tony Abbott gave a clear message to EU leaders urging them to do everything necessary to curb the flow of illegal migrants penetrating EU borders.

A military solution is “impossible” in parts of the Middle East, US CIA chief John Brennan said Tuesday, arguing that it was hard to picture effective central governments in some countries as they exist today.

Brennan, who spoke at an intelligence conference in Washington, was joined by other security officials and industry experts.

“When I look at Libya, Syria, Iraq and Yemen,” Brennan said, “it’s hard for me to envision a central government in those countries that’s going to be able to exert control or authority over the territory that was carved out post World War II.”

“A military solution is just impossible in any of these countries,” he added.

“You need to be able to bring down the temperature, try to de-escalate the conflict, build up some trust between the parties that are there, that are seriously interested by a peace settlement” he said.

Pope Francis meets with Jewish leaders on 50th anniversary of Nostra Aetate

ROME (JTA) — Jewish leaders met with Pope Francis in Rome on the 50th anniversary of the Nostra Aetate, the declaration promulgated by Pope Paul VI that led to improved relations between Jews and Catholics.

“Yes to the rediscovery of the Jewish roots of Christianity. No to anti-Semitism,” the pope said Wednesday morning during the public audience on St. Peter’s Square.

Later, Francis said, “Since Nostra Aetate, indifference and opposition have turned into cooperation and goodwill. Enemies and strangers became friends and brothers.”

The landmark document inaugurated historic changes in the Catholic Church’s relations with other faiths. Its 600-word section on Judaism — approximately one-third of the document — rejects the charge, long leveled against the collective Jewish people, that Jews are guilty of killing Christ.

Data protection authorities in Germany have announced that they will review the legality of internet giants’ data transfers from the EU to the US, after the European Court of Justice ruled that Europeans’ data isn’t safe from intelligence services on US-based servers.

The Hamburg Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information, Johannes Caspar announced that his office will investigate the Germany-based subsidiaries of companies like Google and Facebook for potentially illegal data transfers.

“Anyone who wants to remain untouched by the legal and political implications of the judgment, should in the future consider storing personal data only on servers within the European Union,” Casper told Der Spiegel.

A far-right Israeli group that advocates Jewish sovereignty on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount has launched a campaign to encourage worshipers to violate a ban on Jewish prayer at the flashpoint religious site.

“Returning to the Mount” has offered NIS 2,000 ($516) to anyone who goes to the Temple Mount and is caught praying, Channel 2 reported Tuesday. Suspected violators of the ban on Jewish prayer on the Temple Mount are routinely arrested by Israeli police.

Jews consider the Temple Mount, formerly the site of the two temples, to be Judaism’s holiest site. Muslims regard the compound — which today houses the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock, known in Arabic as the Holy Sanctuary — as the third-holiest site in Islam.

The site has been the focal point of violence wracking Israel and the Palestinian territories — including dozens of Palestinian stabbing attacks on Israelis — in the past month, amid claims by Palestinian leaders that Israel plans to change the status quo on the Temple Mount. Israel has vehemently denied those charges.

Raphael Morris, head of Returning to the Mount, said that “the situation for Jews on the Temple Mount worsens with each passing moment; the ruthless restrictions on Jews for every matter on the Temple Mount constitute a precedent for discrimination against Jews in general and Judaism in particular. We are not prepared [to let] the situation deteriorate. We must act not only to end the slide, but moreover for the addition of rights for Jews on the mount, the first of which is prayer.”

(JTA) — Walmart pulled an Israeli soldier costume and a “Sheik Fagin” prosthetic nose after facing a backlash from social media.

The products reportedly were removed from the discount department store chain’s website and from store shelves on Tuesday afternoon, hours after the American-Arab Anti-Discriminatory Committee called on Walmart and other retailers to remove the products, as well as others deemed anti-Arab.

The committee, known as the ADC, was joined in its call by the Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR, and the U.S. Palestinian Community Network, or USPCN.

‘The worst calories’: Sugar even more harmful than it seems, study finds

Published time: 28 Oct, 2015 12:58

© Tim Wimborne© Tim Wimborne / Reuters If you have a sweet tooth, you may want to think twice before you pick up your next donut. A new study says that sugar is “toxic,” leading to metabolic diseases such as high blood pressure and heart disease – even if no weight is gained.

The research – conducted by pediatric endocrinologist Robert Lustig at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in San Francisco, and Jean-Marc Schwarz of the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Touro University California – examined 43 obese children who had high blood pressure, unhealthy cholesterol levels, or signs of too much fat in their livers. The children were between the ages of nine and 18.

The children were put on a restricted diet which eliminated added sugar from sodas, sweet, and other foods.

Sugar intake was reduced from about 28 percent of total calories to about 10 percent. Fructose – a form of sugar believed to be particularly bad for health – was reduced from 12 percent to four percent of total calories.

Sugary foods were then replaced with starchier alternatives, such as hot dogs, potato chips, and pizza.
