Trump and Cruz to headline rally opposing Iran deal

(JTA) — Both Donald Trump and Ted Cruz will speak at a Washington, D.C. rally against the Iran nuclear deal.

The two Republican presidential candidates each will appear at a Sept. 9 rally sponsored by the Zionist Organization of America, the pro-Israel group announced Thursday.

The deal, which lifts sanctions on Iran in exchange for it curbing its nuclear program, was finalized between Iran and six world powers, including the United States, last month. Congress will vote on the deal in September, and President Obama has promised to veto any rejection.

The Israeli government and numerous American Jewish organizations, including the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, oppose the deal. However, hundreds of rabbis and several prominent Jews, including some Democratic congressmen, have come out in support of it.

Two days after a rocket fired from the Gaza Strip struck southern Israel, a radical jihadist group affiliated with the Islamic State on Friday claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Omar Hadid Brigade, a Salafist group based in the Gaza Strip, claimed it launched the rocket Wednesday night which caused no damage or casualties. The group previously claimed a number of rocket attacks at Israel earlier in the summer.

The group is at odds with Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, and has previously defied the Hamas government by firing rockets at Israel. Sporadic rocket fire from the Gaza Strip recent months has largely been the work of small radical jihadist groups, such as the Omar Hadid Brigade, chafing under Hamas rule. However, Israel holds Hamas responsible for all rocket fire from the Strip.

In response to the attack the IDF carried out an airstrike in the central Gaza Strip late Wednesday night, targeting a Hamas weapons production facility in the center of the territory. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

COLUMBIA, South Carolina (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Scott Walker said the United States under his leadership would aggressively confront what he described as “evil” and “radical Islamic terrorism.”

The Wisconsin governor plans to lay out his foreign policy agenda Friday in a speech at The Citadel, a military college in the early-voting state of South Carolina.

According to excerpts released by his campaign, Walker will accuse President Barack Obama of wide-ranging weakness on the world stage, from his proposed nuclear deal with Iran to his handling of relations with China and Russia.

“As president, I will send the following message: the retreat is over,” Walker says. “American leadership is back and, together with our allies, we will not surrender another inch of ground to terrorists or any other power that threatens our safety.”

The greatest challenge, Walker says, is Islamic State militants who have taken over portions of Iraq and Syria.

Obama to U.S. Jews: ‘We’re not giving away anything’ to Iran

In an address to American Jews on Friday, President Barack Obama insisted that the agreement negotiated between world powers and Iran blocks the Islamic Republic from developing nuclear weapons without limiting the United State’s options in case of violations.

“This deal blocks every way, every pathway Iran might take to obtain a nuclear weapon,” said Obama during the 50-minute webcast, filmed live from the White House. “We’re not giving away anything in this deal in terms of our capacity to respond if they chose to cheat.”

The event was co-sponsored by the Jewish Federations of North America and the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations. Obama made a few remarks before responding to questions, many submitted by American Jews to the organizers in advance.

The agreement reached on July 14 between Iran and six world powers, including the United States, requires Iran to remove all but a “handful” of centrifuges from the Natanz nuclear facility, downgrade the heavy water plant at Arak and convert the Fordow plant into a research facility, Obama said.

“In the best of all worlds, Iran would have no nuclear infrastructure whatsoever,” he said. “Unfortunately that’s not a reality that’s obtainable.”

Israeli soldiers have always been notorious for their brutal attacks against Palestinian civilians, especially children. The photos released on Friday have once against testified to the ferocity and savagery of the regime’s armed forces. However, they also depict the commendable courage of the Palestinian women in the face of Tel Aviv’s cruel inhumanity, bearing witness to the fact that the oppressed Muslim nation will never forgo pursuing its inalienable rights.

Israeli armed forces attacked Palestinians during a protest against Tel Aviv’s illegal settlement activities in the occupied West Bank village of Nabi Saleh near Ramallah on Friday.

The photos from the clashes show that an Israeli soldier tried to arrest a Palestinian boy with a broken arm. The soldier placed the boy in a headlock and held him at gunpoint despite his wounded hand.

Obama to US Jews: Iran deal lifts existential threat to Israel

In live broadcast, president says ‘deal blocks every pathway that Iran might take’ to nukes; expects ‘sacrosanct’ US-Israel ties will improve

US President Barack Obama insisted Friday that the recently negotiated agreement on Iran’s nuclear program “deals with the existential threat to Israel,” citing the concerns of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, one of the most vehement opponents of the deal. Furthermore, he said, the agreement “blocks every way, every pathway that Iran might take in order to obtain a nuclear weapon.”

He said once the nuclear accord was implemented, he expected “pretty quick” improvements in US-Israeli relations.

Obama was speaking from the White House in live webcast organized by North American Jewish groups about the Iran nuclear deal. At the start of the webcast, the president made a few remarks before taking questions that were submitted ahead of the event.

The president said that the agreement ensures that Iran’s centrifuges in Natanz will be removed, except for a handful, and it makes sure that those cannot be used to create enriched uranium. He said the plant at Fordo would be converted into a research facility and would no longer have in it centrifuges that could be used to create nuclear materials.

He also maintained that the US has ensured that it can “snap back” the tight sanctions on the Islamic Republic that Obama credited with bringing Iran to the negotiating table, “in the event that Iran cheats or does not abide by the terms of the deal.”

Plunder-filled Nazi train worth millions has likely been found

(JTA) — With evidence mounting that a Nazi train loaded with millions of dollars worth of plundered items has been found in Poland, the World Jewish Congress urged the Polish government to ensure any goods stolen from Jews be returned to their legitimate owners or their heirs.

On Friday, Polish Deputy Culture Minister Piotr Zuchowski announced he has seen a ground-penetrating radar image indicating that the train, which two unidentified individuals claimed to locate earlier this month, likely exists.

Soon after the announcement, World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer said in a statement: “To the extent that any items now being discovered in Poland may have been stolen from Jews before they were sent to death, concentration or forced labor camps, it is essential that every measure is taken to return the property to its rightful owners or to their heirs.”

The statement added, “If no such survivors or heirs can be found, any gold or other property that is found to have belonged to Jewish families or businesses must now inure to the benefit of Polish Jewish survivors who unfortunately have never been adequately compensated by Poland for the unspeakable suffering they endured and their catastrophic economic losses in the Holocaust.”

The European Union’s outgoing envoy to Palestine says the 28-nation bloc is continuing its efforts to pass more measures against illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.

John Gatt-Rutter, the envoy to the besieged Gaza Strip and the occupied Palestinian territories, said on Thursday that “there is support within the union to go on” with anti-settlement measures.

Among debated proposals is labeling of products made in settlements. These goods have already been barred from receiving customs exemptions.

Gatt-Rutter also emphasized that there were “more tools” the EU can use against Israel over its illegal settlement activities in the occupied West Bank.

Diplomatic sources earlier said that the EU was looking into the possibility of blacklisting “violent settlers.” The sanctions are expected to affect up to 200 individuals.

Israeli forces have reportedly stolen money and jewelry from a Palestinian home during a predawn raid in the occupied West Bank.

Nasim Hilmi Karaki, a lieutenant colonel with the Palestinian Authority national security forces, said Wednesday that the Israelis stole money and jewelry from his family home in the northern West Bank village of Salem, east of Nablus, Palestinian Ma’an news agency reported.

The Israelis forced their way through the main door of the residence. The Palestinian security officer was cuffed and forced to stay with the rest of the family in one of the rooms. Karaki said the house was ransacked for at least four hours.

According to Karaki, the Israeli forces were searching for firearms but were unable to find any.

Obama expects better US-Israel ties after Iran deal in place

In webcast with Jewish Americans, US president says as soon as debate over nuclear deal is over, he hopes Washington and Jerusalem can resume talks on continuing to improve and enhance Israel’s security.

WASHINGTON – US President Barack Obama on Friday compared tensions between the United States and Israel over the Iranian nuclear deal to a family feud and said he expects quick improvements in ties between the longtime allies once the accord is implemented.
The president’s comments came as momentum for the nuclear accord grew on Capitol Hill, where lawmakers will vote next month on a resolution to disapprove of the deal. Democratic Sen. Tom Carper became the 30th senator to publicly back the agreement, saying Friday that it was a good deal for America and for allies like Israel.

US Democratic Senator Tom Carper of Delaware declared Thursday that he will support the Iran nuclear deal, joining a recent stream of fellow party members to back the agreement.

“The deal provides Iran an opportunity to rebuild its economy and shed the pariah status it’s borne for decades,” Carper wrote in an op-ed piece published by The News Journal.

Carper acknowledged criticisms made by the deal’s opponents, who say the nuclear accord signed between Iran and world powers last month makes too many concessions to the Islamic Republic and could still enable it to become a nuclear-armed state.

“I still have serious doubts about their government. So does the Obama administration, for that matter. That’s why this deal is based on mistrust. If some future Iranian regime decides to violate the agreement, we’ll know it,” Carper wrote.

Delaware’s other lawmakers, Senator Chris Coons and Representative John Carney — both Democrats — have yet to announce their position on the deal. According to The News Journal report, Coons is expected to announce his position on Tuesday.
