Putin: Russia has no intention of mounting Syria ground operation, wants to see political compromise

Using ground troops in Syria is out of the question, the Russian president said in an interview with Rossiya 1 TV. Russia’s air operation has been thoroughly prepared and is aimed merely at aiding the Syrian Army’s offensive, he said.“Whatever happens, we’re not going to do this [ground operation] and our Syrian friends are well aware of it,” President Vladimir Putin said in an interview with Russian TV anchor Vladimir Solovyov.

Embedded journalism: Ynet reporter on night out with violent Jewish supremacists

WATCH: Our Jerusalem correspondent stumbles upon a narrowly averted attack of Arab workers at a convenience store by far-right activists. On Thursday night, with the current terrorism wave on my mind, I covered a violent protest organized by two far-right Jerusalem groups, which was attended by about 700 people. Police reported that the protesters threw stones toward officers, and a few protesters were arrested.
During their entire march, organized by La Familia (a group of far-right fans of the Beitar Jerusalem soccer club) and Lehava (a right-wing organization dedicated to preventing the “assimilation” of Jews with non-Jews in Israel), the protesters chanted slogans such as “death to Arabs” and “may your village burn,” and looked for Arabs to attack. And indeed, after the protest ended a number of the participants attacked a taxi driver and attempted to attack other Arab passersby.

(JTA) — U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry called for efforts to restore calm in Israel during telephone conversations with Israeli and Palestinian leaders.

Kerry over the weekend spoke with both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas about the current wave of violence throughout Israel, the State Department said in a statement.

The statement said that Kerry called the leaders “to express his deep concern over the recent wave of violence and offer his support for efforts to restore calm as soon as possible. He reiterated the importance of strongly condemning violence and combating incitement, and taking affirmative steps to reduce tensions.”

Kerry also “stressed the importance of upholding the status quo in word and deed at the Haram al Sharif/Temple Mount and of preventing inflammatory rhetoric and actions that will increase tensions.”

Israel retaliatory strikes against Hamas kill pregnant Palestinian, 2-year-old daughter

JERUSALEM (JTA) — A pregnant Palestinian woman and her 2-year-old daughter reportedly were killed in a retaliatory airstrike by Israel against Hamas.

The early Sunday morning strike by the Israeli Air Force against what it called two “Hamas weapon manufacturing facilities” in the northern Gaza Strip came in response to two rocket attacks on Israel. The Palestinian Maan news agency reported on the two deaths.

The Iron Dome missile defense system had intercepted a rocket over the densely populated southern city of Ashkelon the previous night, according to the Israel Defense Forces. On Friday night, three rockets were fired from Gaza at a town on the Israeli border with the coastal strip. Following the attack, an additional Iron Dome battery was deployed on Saturday to southern Israel near Beersheba.

On Friday evening and Saturday, at least seven Palestinians were killed while trying to infiltrate at the border fence between Israel and Gaza. Dozens of Palestinian rioters broke through the barrier, the IDF said.

Israeli forces have gunned down a 13-year-old boy during clashes south of the city of al-Bireh as clashes continue between Palestinian demonstrators and Israeli troops in the occupied West Bank, medics say.

Ahmad Sharaka was shot in the neck with a live round near the city of Ramallah in central West Bank on Sunday, medics said.

Another Palestinian was shot in his leg with live fire during the protest in the al-Balu area of southern Bireh, while another was shot with rubber-coated steel bullets.

Two others reportedly suffered excessive tear gas inhalation.

Israeli bulldozers had reportedly removed large objects in the area, in order to remove cover for Palestinian protesters.

The Palestinian resistance movement, Hamas, has warned the Tel Aviv regime to avoid further “foolish” acts against Palestinians after Israel carried out deadly air raids on the Gaza Strip.

“This shows the occupation’s desire to escalate,” Hamas spokesman, Sami Abu Zuhri, said on Sunday, adding, “We warn the occupation against continuing this foolishness.”

The remarks came hours after a pregnant Palestinian woman and her three-year-old daughter lost their lives as Israeli jets carried out multiple airstrikes on Gaza.

An Israeli military spokesperson claimed that the attacks targeted an alleged weapons manufacturing site belonging to Hamas in response to rocket fire from Gaza.

The developments come amid rising tensions between Palestinian protesters and Israeli troops elsewhere in Palestine, where the two sides have been engaged in heavy clashes over the past several days.

The scuffles were triggered by Tel Aviv’s imposition on August 26 of sweeping restrictions on entries into the al-Aqsa Mosque compound in East al-Quds and Israeli settlers’ repeated storming of the mosque, which is Islam’s third holiest site.

Thousands of Israeli protesters have staged a massive rally to protest the recent spate of clashes between Palestinian people and Israeli troops, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

On Saturday evening, the demonstrators converged in front of Netanyahu’s residence in al-Quds (Jerusalem) to denounce the spiraling violence in the occupied West Bank and East al-Quds as well as the Tel Aviv regime’s failure to bring the situation under control.

The protesters shouted “Bibi, go home!” and criticized Israeli authorities for their provocations against Palestinians.

Similar anti-Netanyahu protests were also staged in other Israeli towns, with demonstrators blocking roads and throwing stones and firecrackers at police forces.

Meanwhile, the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) says more than 170 Palestinians have sustained gunshot wounds during Saturday skirmishes in the Palestinian territories.

Israel’s central bank governor Karnit Flug was ranked among the best central governors in the world by Global Finance magazine.

The Bank of Israel chief was one of only nine central bankers to earn the journal’s highest “A” rating, alongside the governors of the European Central Bank and the national banks of Taiwan, the Czech Republic, India, Peru, Paraguay, Philippines and Malaysia.

She was formally recognized for the achievement, first announced in September, at a ceremony Saturday night.

Flug is in Lima, Peru, leading a delegation of Israeli officials to the 2015 IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings in the Peruvian capital. At the gathering, Flug met with US Treasury Secretary Jack Lew and various central bankers from around the world, the Israel Hayom daily reports.

It was the second year in a row in which Flug stood at the top of the financial journal’s ranking of 74 central bankers, which gives them a grade between A and F. Flug was appointed Israel’s central bank governor in November 2013.

US Jewish leaders to Obama: Cut funding to Abbas if he won’t curb terrorism

American Jewish leaders on Wednesday urged the US government to cut funding to the Palestinian Authority and isolate its president, Mahmoud Abbas, unless he acts “decisively” to curb Palestinian violence against Israelis.

In a statement issued after a series of terror attacks in Israel and the West Bank and numerous clashes, the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations demanded that the PA and Abbas be “held to account.”

The Conference, the umbrella organization representing dozens of US Jewish groups, called on the Obama administration, “which provides hundreds of millions of dollars of funding each year to the Palestinian Authority, to demand that Palestinian officials act decisively to curb the violence. We know that President Abbas can impact the ‘Palestinian street’ when he wants to. His failure to do so should bring a cut in funding and the isolation of Abbas until he takes concrete steps,” said Stephen Greenberg (chairman) and Malcolm Hoenlein (executive vice chairman/CEO) in a statement.

The organization condemned what it described as “The increasing number of violent and potentially lethal attacks against Israeli civilians as well as security personnel. It said “no society would or should have to tolerate such acts against woman, children, and men attacked while driving, visiting malls, attending religious services, or going about their daily lives.”
