WASHINGTON (JTA) — Hillary Clinton trounces Donald Trump among Jewish voters, but underperforms compared to her Democratic predecessors, according to an American Jewish Committee poll that depicts a Jewish community disenchanted with politics and anxious about the country’s future.

The poll released Tuesday shows Clinton defeating Trump, 61 percent to 19 percent among Jewish voters. She beats Trump on a range of issues, notably national security, an area where the Republican nominee hopes to hammer his Democratic rival.

Trump is also underperforming significantly compared to his recent Republican predecessors in recent elections, including Mitt Romney (30 percent in 2012), John McCain (22 percent in 2008) and George W. Bush (24 percent in 2004).

Respondents said Clinton would be better than Trump in handling terrorism (58-22 percent), would be more likely to unite the country (55-11 percent), would be more likely to promote U.S.-Israel relations (57-22 percent) and would be more effective in dealing with Iran (58-19 percent).

Israel’s Education Minister Naftali Bennett says that learning about the Jewish faith is more important than studying mathematics and science. He made the statement after the government dropped demands for ultra-Orthodox schools to teach core subjects.

“Learning about Judaism and excellence in the subject is more important in my eyes than mathematics and the sciences,” said Bennett, “and it is hard for me to say that,” he added, as cited by the Times of Israel.

The trial of a 95-year-old man, charged with 3,681 counts of accessory to murder as a former SS medic in Auschwitz, has opened in Germany after questions surrounding his health caused three previous postponements.

The court heard that Hubert Zafke, a retired farmer reportedly suffered from stress, high blood pressure and suicidal thoughts, but Judge Klas Kabisch decided to proceed with the case on Monday after a doctor determined that Zafke was fit to attend court.

Zafke was scheduled to stand trial in Neubrandenburg state court in February.

Israeli warplanes have once again targeted Syrian government artillery positions in Syria’s Golan Heights.

Israel carried out the violation of Syrian airspace late on Tuesday, claiming that the attack was launched in response to three mortar shells launched from Syria and landed in the Israeli occupied territories.

In one of the raids, Israeli fighter jets pounded Syrian army positions on a road linking the Abu Kaouk checkpoint to the city of Quneitra.

There are no immediate reports of casualties or damage yet.

Earlier, Syria denounced the Israeli regime’s Monday airstrike on the southwestern Quneitra province, situated in the Golan Heights, calling on the United Nations to take measures against the Tel Aviv regime over its support for terrorists operating inside the Arab country.

Syria says Israel and its Western and regional allies are aiding Takfiri militant groups operating inside the Arab country. Moreover, the Syrian army has repeatedly seized huge quantities of Israeli-made weapons and advanced military equipment from the foreign-backed militants inside Syria.

Russia says US-backed militant groups in Syria have violated the new ceasefire 23 times since it entered into force in the northwestern city of Aleppo.

Viktor Poznikhir, a senior Russian military officer, said in a televised briefing on Wednesday that anti-Damascus groups have targeted residential areas as well as army positions, while Syrian government forces were fully respecting the truce.

“Syrian government troops have completely stopped firing, with the exception of areas where Daesh and Jabhat al-Nusra fighters are active,” Poznikhir said, adding, “Unfortunately the same cannot be said for armed units of the moderate opposition controlled by the US. After the start of the cessation of hostilities by this morning, 23 instances of firing on residential areas and government positions were registered.”

The Russian official, however, said the ceasefire in Aleppo is largely holding.

Russia has sent artillery reconnaissance equipment to Aleppo to detect and suppress attempts at ceasefire violations.

On Tuesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov criticized the US-led coalition’s refusal to conduct airstrikes in Syria on positions held by the Jabhat Fateh al-Sham terrorist group, formerly known as al-Nusra Front, calling on Washington to reverse its course.

Lavrov called on the coalition forces to consider the Jabhat Fateh al-Sham as a terrorist outfit, saying, “I have a very demanding task now – not to let this list (of terrorist organizations) be reduced.”

“I have no reason not to trust [US Secretary of State] John Kerry, but what we see on the ground (in Syria) is that the coalition is very reluctant to strike the positions of the Nusra Front,” Lavrov added.

Since September 2014, the US and some of its allies have been carrying out airstrikes against what are said to be positions of the Daesh Takfiri terrorists in Syria without any authorization from Damascus or a UN mandate.

The US-Russia brokered ceasefire went into effect on Monday at sunset. The deal’s initial objectives include allowing humanitarian access and joint Moscow-Washington attacks against those militant groups that are not covered by the agreement, including Daesh and al-Qaeda-linked Jabhat Fateh al-Sham.

Syria has denounced the Israeli regime’s fresh airstrike on the southwestern Quneitra province, situated in the Golan Heights, calling on the United Nations to take measures against the Tel Aviv regime over its support for terrorists operating inside the Arab country.

The Syrian Foreign and Expatriates Ministry issued the call in two letters sent to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and head of UN Security Council (UNSC), Ramlan Bin Ibrahim, on Tuesday, SANA news agency reported.

The Syrian ministry described the Israeli aggression as “a desperate attempt to boost the deteriorating morale of the terrorist organizations after the losses inflicted upon them by the Syrian army in Quneitra countryside and across Syria.”

It further noted that the Israeli aerial assault came within the framework of an alliance between Tel Aviv and terrorists, particularly Jabhat Fateh al-Sham, al-Qaeda’s Syrian branch formerly known as al-Nusra Front.

Syria urges the UNSC and the UN chief to take all procedures, stipulated in the UN Charter, to punish Israel for its offenses and force it to halt its aggression and immediately suspend its backing for terrorists, the ministry added.

The Syrian army says it has shot down an Israeli warplane and a drone inside Syria following an Israeli attack on Syrian army positions in the south, state media report.

Syria’s official SANA news cited the Syrian military as saying that the intruding aircraft had been detected and targeted by the country’s air defense system while they were striking Syrian military positions. The warplane, it said, was downed in western Quneitra and the drone in an area called Sa’sa’ and located on the Damascus Reef.

Soon after the report, the Israeli military denied that any of its aircraft had been shot down in Syria, claiming that two missiles were fired at them during the airstrike on Quneitra but missed.

Israeli fighter jets had attacked two Syrian army cannons in the Golan Heights, where Quneitra is located, early on Tuesday morning. It was the fifth such attack in just over a week.

Israel seized parts of the Golan Heights from Syria after the 1967 Six-Day War and later annexed it in a move that has never been recognized by the international community.

The Swedish military has announced that troops training on the island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea, not far from Russia, will remain there permanently. Officials said “external factors” prompted the order for some 150 soldiers to stay on the island.

“The armed forces [now] … have joint permanent groups and troops on Gotland. Gotland is one of our military strategic areas in Sweden … Gotland needs … to increase their operational capacity, and allow troops to practice and work in the field,” the Swedish Armed Forces cited Supreme Commander Micael Byden as saying on its website.

Byden later told Swedish broadcaster SVT that “external factors in the world have deteriorated over time and it means I have made a decision about a permanent presence and that we put the battle group here earlier.”

Some 150 soldiers currently training on Gotland received orders on Wednesday morning to remain on the island.

“We have to look realistically at the situation in the world. The armed forces are now taking their responsibility, and demonstrating that with increased military capability we are taking responsibility for the country’s sovereignty,” Byden added.

The EU should play a part in Syria peace negotiations and have its own military force “to complement NATO,” European Commission head Jean-Claude Juncker said in his annual address to the European Parliament.

The EC president insisted it was unthinkable for the European Union not to take part in the negotiations to resolve the war in Syria, and proposed developing a common European strategy for the war-torn Middle East country.

Turkey’s top military commander says an ongoing offensive in northern Syrian will continue until southern borders are secured and Turkish forces mop “all terrorists” out of the region.

“Our security forces have fought and will continue to fight shoulder-to-shoulder until all terrorists are routed, and our borders are secured,” Chief of Staff General Hulusi Akar said on Monday.

Ankara deployed troops and tanks into northern Syria on August 24 in a bid to eradicate Daesh and Kurdish militants.

Syria, which is fighting foreign-backed militancy since March 2011, has denounced the Turkish incursion as a breach of its sovereignty.

Over the past few months, Syrian forces have managed to liberate several areas, dealing a heavy blow to the Takfiri militants active in the Arab country.

Akar spoke after visiting troops in the Turkish border town of Karkamis that lies opposite the Syrian town of Jarabulus which Ankara-backed militants took over from Daesh last month.

Turkish tanks stormed the city in a lightening advance after meeting little resistance from Daesh terrorists who had previously put up a stiff resistance to Kurdish fighters.

WASHINGTON (JTA) — James Woolsey, a former CIA director known for his outspoken opposition to the Iran deal, joined the presidential campaign of Donald Trump as a senior adviser.

In an announcement Monday by the Republican nominee’s campaign, Woolsey cast his decision to join mostly in support of recent promises by Trump to end budget cuts to the defense community. Trump had previously favored cutting defense spending.

“I am pleased to be asked to participate with others I respect in advising GOP candidate Donald J. Trump on the urgent need to reinvest in and modernize our military in order to confront the challenges of the 21st century,” Woolsey said. “Mr. Trump’s commitment to reversing the harmful defense budget cuts signed into law by the current administration, while acknowledging the need for debt reduction, is an essential step toward reinstating the United States’ primacy in the conventional and digital battlespace.”
