Over a third of babies born in the UK are no longer white British: More than 10% come from other Caucasian backgrounds mirroring increased migration from Europe

  • Fewer than two in three babies born in 2014 were classified as white British
  • Ethnic breakdown of births showed that 65.3% were born to mothers who put the ethnicity of their child as white British
  • Proportion is much lower than the white British population as a whole
  • Figures came same week Theresa May told the Conservative Conference when immigration is too high ‘it is impossible to build a cohesive society’

Fewer than two in three babies born last year were officially classified as white British, figures showed yesterday.

The first ethnic breakdown of births showed that 65.3 per cent were born to mothers who put the ethnicity of their child as white British.

The proportion is much lower than the white British population as a whole, which was recorded as just over 80 per cent at the 2011 national census.

The decline in births among the majority background is a fresh indicator of the impact of large-scale immigration over the past 15 years.

The figures came in a week in which Home Secretary Theresa May told the Conservative Party Conference that when immigration is too high ‘it is impossible to build a cohesive society’.

Among the third of babies said to be members of ethnic minorities, 10.3 per cent were recorded as ‘white other’. The relatively high proportion appears to mirror increased immigration from Europe.

Jewish youth stabs 4 Arabs in southern Israel

(JTA) — An Israeli Jew stabbed four Arabs in an apparent revenge attack for Palestinian terrorism.

The stabbing victims in the southern Israeli town of Dimona were brought on Friday morning for treatment at Soroka Medical Center in nearby Beersheba. Two of the victims sustained minor injuries; the others were moderately injured.

The attacker, a 17-year-old, is in custody. He has a criminal record. According to Ynet, he told officers during questioning that he stabbed his victims because “all Arabs are terrorists.” The Beersheba Magistrate’s Court on Friday extended his remand by six days and referred the suspect to a psychiatric evaluation, as requested by his lawyer, the far-right activist Itamar Ben-Gvir, Channel 2 reported. Ben-Gvir told the court his client’s mental health “deteriorated because of the reality to which he was exposed.”

5 Palestinians reported killed in Gaza-Israel border riot

(JTA) — Israeli troops killed five Palestinians who approached the border between Israel and Gaza, Palestinian sources said.

In addition to the fatalities, 35 people were injured near the fence on Friday afternoon, when Israel Defense Forces opened fire on individuals who came close to it in two different area of the Gaza Strip, the Maan news agency reported.

According to the report, which was based on accounts by medics who treated the wounded, two Palestinians were killed after being shot by Israeli forces near Khan Younis. One of the fatalities, Muhammad al-Raqeb, was 15. Adnan Moussa Abu Elayyan, 22, was shot in the head and killed in the same area.

The two Palestinians were there with a dozen other Gazans to protest against Israel, according to Maan. Ynet reported they were shot at after they approached the fence to hurl stones and firebombs on soldiers guarding the area.

Stone-throwing settlers smash Palestinian minister’s car windows, PA says

(JTA) — Palestinian officials accused Israeli settlers of assaulting a Palestinian Authority minister near Nablus amid multiple cases of attacks by Jews on Arabs as revenge for Palestinian terrorism.

The alleged attack on Communications and Information Technology Minister Alam Moussa occurred on Thursday, unnamed officials told the Maan news agency, saying assailants smashed his car windows during the attack.

On Friday, police recorded three attacks in Israel and the West Bank by Palestinians on Jews, and one attack by an Israeli Jew against four Arabs. One of the Palestinian assailants, who tried to stab a police officer near Hebron, was killed. Other injuries sustained by victims and attackers were light to moderate-serious.

At least six Palestinians have lost their lives and more than a dozen others sustained injuries after Israeli forces opened fire at a group of Palestinian protesters in the eastern part of the blockaded Gaza Strip.

Palestinian medical sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Hammoud Hisham Muhsen, Ahmad al-Harbawi, Abed al-Wahidi and Hussam Dawla were fatally shot as Israeli troopers fired live bullets to disperse the Palestinian protesters east of the Shejaiya neighborhood of Gaza City on Friday, Palestinian Arabic-language Ma’an news agency reported.

The identity of two of the victims have not immediately been released.

The sources added that as many as 35 Palestinians were also wounded during the imbroglio, describing the injuries as slight to moderate.

In the occupied West Bank, Israeli forces also attacked Palestinians protesting against Tel Aviv’s provocations at al-Aqsa Mosque.

Many undercover Israeli soldiers join Palestinian protests as agent provocateur and incite protesters to hurl stones at Israeli soldiers, then they draw their guns and start helping their fellow military members in arresting the protesters. A newly released video has captured such a story.

Disguised as Palestinian protesters, the Israeli infiltrating team was caught on camera by several journalists in the vicinity of the illegally-built Israeli settlement of Beit El near Ramallah in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday.

The video also shows Palestinian protesters running from the scene while Israeli agents – who were shooting toward the crowd with their handguns – help other Israeli soldiers in giving a torrent of kicks and punches on the captured protesters.

At least one young Palestinian was shot in the leg at point-blank range by one of the fake protesters.

WASHINGTON – The US Senate is expected to vote Wednesday afternoon to advance a key defense spending bill with a number of provisions guaranteeing security assistance to Israel, but is expected to run into the president’s veto pen.

The National Defense Authorization Act is the newest epicenter of a fight over federal spending levels and the budget for fiscal year 2016.

The bill, which governs defense spending for the 2016 fiscal year, would authorize the establishment of a joint anti-tunnel program between Israel and the US. The initiative would be funded up to $25 million per year, provided that matching funds are provided by Israel. The bill would also provide over $206 million earmarked for rocket and missile defense ventures, including $41.4 million for the Iron Dome missile defense project, up to $150 million for procurement of the David’s Sling mid-range rocket interceptor, and a maximum of $15 million for the Arrow 3 long-range interceptor program.

It also would require Congress to be briefed on the anticipated sale of fighter airplanes to Qatar, including an analysis reflecting on the implications of the sale for Israel’s ability to retain its “qualitative military edge.”

Speaking late last month in Washington, former IDF chief-of-general-staff Lt.-Gen. (res.) Benny Gantz emphasized the commitment to Israel’s military edge as one of the highlights of the US-Israel relationship.

Ross: U.S.-Israel relations suffered because Rice failed to communicate

WASHINGTON (JTA) — National Security Adviser Susan Rice’s failure to cultivate Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu contributed to a breakdown in US-Israel communication, a former top U.S. official said.

Dennis Ross, who was President Barack Obama’s top Iran adviser from 2009-2011, said frequent communications between the Obama and Netanyahu governments between 2009 and 2012 tamped down the Israeli prime minister’s anxieties about Obama’s Iran plans, with assurances that the president was determined to keep Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.

In November 2013, Ross – no longer in government – was visiting Jerusalem when Netanyahu summoned him, he recounts in a new book, excerpted Thursday in Politico. Israel had been caught of guard by the acceleration in sanctions relief for nuclear restrictions talks between Iran and six major powers.

Ben Carson blames gun control for the Holocaust

(JTA) — Republican presidential hopeful Ben Carson blamed gun control for the extent of the Holocaust.

In an interview Thursday on CNN, Carson said fewer people would have been killed by the Nazis had more citizens been armed.

“I think the likelihood of Hitler being able to accomplish his goals would have been greatly diminished if the people had been armed,” he said. “I’m telling you there is a reason these dictatorial people take the guns first.”

Council of Europe doubles down on anti-ritual circumcision stance

(JTA) — The Council of Europe is maintaining its position that non-medical circumcision of boys is a violation of children’s rights, despite reports in Israeli media that said the council reversed its position.

According to statements from Israeli politicians and Jewish activists, the Council of Europe — a body for pan-European dialogue that lacks executive powers  — switched positions when its Parliamentary Assembly passed Resolution 2076 on “Freedom of religion and living together in a democratic society” on Sept. 30.

Milah UK, a leading Jewish advocacy group supporting the practice of circumcision, on Tuesday said in a statement that the resolution “cancels a previous motion that had cast into doubt the legality of religious circumcision.” Milah is the Hebrew name for the ritual circumcision of eight-day-old males.

In 2013, the assembly passed Resolution 1952, which states that the practice of ritual circumcision, along with female genital mutilation, is a harmful “violation of the physical integrity of children.”

What Syria’s refugees think about Israel might surprise you

BERLIN (JTA) – Israel’s government is in cahoots with Syrian President Bashar Assad. America wants to keep the Syrian civil war going for as long as possible. Russia is outmaneuvering the United States on the global stage.

Those are some of the viewpoints you’re likely to hear if you talk politics with Syrians pouring out of their war-torn country and into Europe.

When I went to Berlin recently to write about the wave of migrants arriving in Germany, one of the questions I was most curious about was something that had nagged at me since the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad began bombing its own people back in 2011: Now that you see the true face of your government, do you look at its longtime adversary, Israel, any differently? Could the enemy of your enemy be your friend?

But when it came to their views on Israel, there seemed to be more conspiracy theory than political theory. And I was surprised (though I probably shouldn’t have been) that for many Syrians, the defining element of their identity is sectarian rather than national, and therefore they’re more concerned with the divides among Alawites, Sunnis, Shiites and Kurds than the divide between Arab and Jew.

‘An intriguing finding’: Scientists believe they can predict male homosexuality with 70% accuracy

© Elijah Nouvelage
Scientists now believe they can pinpoint the genetic markers associated with being gay, and do so with up to 70 percent accuracy. However, the twin studies also posit that the “gay genes” can be affected by a person’s environment after birth.

Researchers at the University of California in Los Angeles followed 37 pairs of identical male twins, in which one was homosexual, the other not. They followed an additional 10 sets of twins where both were homosexual. It turned up that only 20 percent of identical twins are both gay, so researchers thought there must be some other causes, which are not inherited.

Findings then also suggested that the presence of specific epigenetic markers in nine areas of the human genome could go a long way toward predicting a preference for homosexuality.

Epigenetics – the field that deals with how DNA behaves after birth – formed the central core of the studies’ approach. While we know DNA to be a sort of manual for how the body looks and functions, epigenetics acts like a highlighting marker, accentuating certain traits. This added layer of information is known to be triggered by environmental factors – everything from chemical exposure to stress and child abuse.

“To our knowledge, this is the first example of a predictive model for sexual orientation based on molecular markers,” UCLA postdoctoral researcher in gender-based biology Tuck Ngun said in a statement.

The research, which hasn’t been published yet, was presented on October 8 at the annual meeting of the American Society of Human Genetics.

The problem that immediately arose after the research was made public indicates a lack of conclusive consensus in the scientific community. While the gay question has intrigued scientists for some time, they can’t agree on the one hand, with the potential accuracy of such an epigenetics test; on the other, researchers can’t agree on exactly what part the environment plays with regard to someone being or becoming gay.

Some British scientists believe the UCLA claim to precision to be a bit “bold.” Ngun himself agrees that the research is inconclusive. As with other similar research, he sees a correlation between factors, but nothing to suggest a cause.

“There is absolutely nothing that’s well accepted that defines a genetic basis of homosexuality,” Harvard University geneticist Dr. Robert Green said, after calling the new claims an “intriguing finding,” according to Healthline.com.

Other researchers also had doubts. “The question as to whether that prediction is going to be useful outside of the small number of twins in the study is really unclear,” genetics professor at the University of Utah, Dr. Christopher Gregg, said, as cited by Reuters. Gregg did, however, praise the researchers’ “state-of-the-art methodology.”

The sentiments were shared by others, who claimed such findings normally fall apart when bigger groups are tested.

“One thing you can clearly see is that the sample size is too small. They don’t have enough power to make that claim,” said Dr. Peng Jin, professor of human genetics from Emory University in Atlanta.

“What they are seeing may be certain correlations, but I don’t think they have what they claim, which is a predicting model,” he added. “It’s definitely an interesting observation, but … I don’t want the general audience to misinterpret whatever they are presenting.”

Professor of genetics Darren Griffin, at the University of Kent in the UK, added, according to The Telegraph, that “while there is strong evidence in general for a biological basis for homosexuality my personal impression has always been one of a multiple contributory, including life experiences.”

Griffin believes the association may not be as plain as it first seems, “as the complete story unfolds.”

“To claim a 70 per cent predictive value of something as complex as homosexuality is bold indeed. I wait with baited breath for a full peer-reviewed article.”

The researchers at UCLA are already at work on a new study with a larger sample.

Why are we the most hated people in Israel?

Op-ed: With its countless charity organizations and focus on Jewish values, the ultra-Orthodox public should have been admired by the entire Israeli society. So why do ‘they’ hate us so much? While we were busy introspecting and repenting during the High Holy Days, a public opinion poll examining “the most hated public in Israel” was published. As always, we won. The ultra-Orthodox public topped the list with a hatred rate of more than 30 percent. Very impressive.
If this were not an issue that defines the place of the haredi community in the Israeli society, I would have thrown the survey away. But it isn’t so: These figures affect the our overall integration – from entering the labor market to political moves that are in haredi public’s interest.

The profound hatred between the Israeli society and the haredi public is wreaking havoc and has far-reaching consequences. The haredi public feels this hatred on a daily basis. There are few haredim who have not encountered the terms “parasite,” “freeloader” and other gems.

UK Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond on Tuesday scorned newly elected leader of the opposition Jeremy Corbyn MP for his failure to mention Israel by name at a meeting of his Labour party’s pro-Israel faction.

“I’ve read the reports of Mr. Corbyn’s attendance at the Labour Friends of Israel meeting at Labour Conference and I just want to say one word to you: Israel. I’ll say it again: Israel!”

Hammond addressed some 500 Conservative party parliamentarians and activists at the annual reception of the Conservative Friends of Israel reception.

Corbyn, who has been accused of being empathetic to Hamas and Hezbollah — terror groups committed to destroying Israel — is widely regarded as one of the British MPs most hostile to Israel.

“I can make you a couple of promises and Mr. Corbyn can’t,” Hammond said. “I can promise you that I will never share a platform with Hezbollah. I can promise you that I will never describe anybody who launches indiscriminate rocket attacks against civilian populations as my friends.”
