In Jerusalem, Huckabee says West Bank not occupied, two-state solution unworkable

(JTA) — Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee said Israel has as much right to the West Bank as the United States has to Manhattan.

Speaking at a press conference at Jerusalem’s Waldorf-Astoria Hotel on Wednesday, the former Arkansas governor, who gave a speech in the West Bank settlement Shiloh on Tuesday said, according to The Guardian: “I don’t see it as occupied, that makes it appear as if someone is illegally taking land. I don’t see it that way.”

He added: “In America, we have about a 400-year relationship to Manhattan. It would be as if I came and said we need to end our occupation of Manhattan. I’m pretty sure most Americans would find that laughable.”

Huckabee, an evangelical Christian who has visited Israel “dozens of times,” said his connection to Israel “is not so much political as it is visceral, personal.”

Dozens of Palestinian Christians have clashed with Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank over resumption of construction work on a separation wall that meanders through Palestinian territories and isolates large swathes of them from areas where Israeli settlers are concentrated.

On Wednesday, the protesters, who were joined by a number of foreign activists, converged on Beit Jala town, located 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) south of al-Quds (Jerusalem), to express their resentment over Israel’s renewed work on the barrier in their area.

Israeli forces scuffled with demonstrators as they chanted anti-Israeli slogans. One demonstrator was arrested as he tried to plant an olive sapling in front of Israeli military forces.

Three Roman Catholic priests were also stopped when they tried to offer their prayers among olive trees that Israeli bulldozers and mechanical diggers were attempting to uproot.

The demonstration came only two days after Israeli bulldozers uprooted scores of olive trees in the Bir Onah area of the Palestinian town, and then leveled the ground as part of plans to resume constructing the separation wall.

Dolphins (file photo)

Palestinian resistance movement Hamas has captured a dolphin with “spying equipment” off the shore of the Gaza Strip.

According to Wednesday reports by Palestinian media outlets based in the blockaded sliver, the aquatic animal was captured a few days ago.

Hamas commandos noticed the sea creature thanks to its “suspicious movements” and caught it.

A small surveillance camera was strapped to the dolphin along with a remote-control monitoring device, also capable of shooting small arrows.

Sources were quoted as saying the arrows were capable of injuring or even killing a man.

The Israeli regime has freed a Palestinian prisoner who has been on hunger strike against his incarceration without charge or trial.

Israel on Wednesday suspended the detention order against Mohammed Allan, releasing him in a move that his family and friends hailed as a victory.

“I feel very happy,” said his brother, Amid Allan. “I hope that my brother… will rise from his bed in healthy condition, as happy as he used to be when they took him from his house.”

Meanwhile, Allan’s lawyer said his client remains unconscious.

Israel’s ruling has not addressed what would happen to Allan if he recovers, saying only he can petition for his release if his condition improves.

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Democrats have the votes, if necessary, to uphold President Barack Obama’s veto of a resolution against his Iran nuclear deal, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said Wednesday.

Pelosi said that if such a vote were held today there would be enough support among House Democrats for Obama to prevail.

That would take 146 House Democrats, and fewer than 60 have publicly declared their support so far.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Pelosi declined to disclose her private vote count but expressed confidence in the outcome.

“The president’s veto would be sustained” if the vote were held today, Pelosi said, adding she hopes it doesn’t get to that point. “But I feel very confident about it.”

Spanish public broadcaster accuses Jews of promoting Satanism

(JTA) — A Spanish public broadcaster accused Jews of promoting Satanism.

State-owned RTVE aired “From the Inferno-The Jewish People: Propagator of the Satan Cult” last month as part of its weekend “A la Carta” program.

Following an opening featuring ominous music, a gravel-voiced announcer quotes from Jacob Frank, an 18th-century Jew from Poland who had been excommunicated by his community for his heretical kabbalistic interpretations.

“The Jews first propagated the cult of Lucifer in several secret satanical societies,” the announcer continues. “Through black magic, the Israelites called on the powers of darkness with demonic rational.”

26 former American Jewish leaders back Iran deal

(JTA) — Twenty-six former senior leaders of major American Jewish groups have signed a letter supporting the agreement over Iran’s nuclear program.

The letter, which appeared Thursday as a full-page advertisement in The New York Times, says that the negotiators “devoted decades to building and enhancing Israel’s security and strengthening the U.S.-Israel alliance,” and that the agreement “cuts off Iran’s ability to pursue a nuclear weapon.”

The signatories include three former chairs of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, one former executive director of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, former leaders of the Conservative and Reform movements, and former heads of the American Jewish Committee and Jewish Community Relations Council.

The list also includes nine former heads of local Jewish federations, some of which have released statements opposing the deal. Carl Levin, a Michigan Democrat, also signed, as did two former Democratic congressmen, Mel Levine of California and Robert Wexler of Florida.

Several major African-American churches rallied in Detroit, Michigan this week in support of Israel while evoking the historic black-Jewish alliance of the Civil Rights movement.

Reverend Dr. Edward L. Branch, a member of The Fellowship’s African American Advisory Council reminded his congregation of the rich history of the black-Jewish relationship during a rally.

Pastor Branch, who leads the mega-church Third New Hope Baptist Church in Detroit urged his congregation “to stand with Israel just as the Jewish community stood with us during the Civil Rights movement, as we seek peace for all people in the Middle East.”

Leading the rally initiative was Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein, founder and president of the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews, also known as The Fellowship. The rabbi spoke to Reverend Branch’s congregation as well as two others on Sunday, August 16, including the Second Presiding Bishop of the Church of God in Christ (COGIC) at the New St. Paul Tabernacle, led by Bishop P.A. NEW YORK — The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday denied Iranian state media accusations that one of the newspaper’s senior reporters of conspiring against Iran’s government.

Stories linking reporter Farnaz Fassihi — a former correspondent in Iran who’s currently based in New York — with the opposition movement “are completely false, outlandish and irresponsible,” the newspaper said in a statement.

The accusations have circulated in conservative media outlets in the Islamic Republic in recent days, including the daily newspaper Kayhan. The editor of Kayhan, Hossein Shariatmadari, is viewed as a representative of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The Journal said allegations appear to stem from an Aug. 9 Forbes opinion piece that references a “Wall Street friend” of Sen. Charles Schumer of New York who acted as a liaison between Iranian protesters and the US government. Some media outlets in Iran “incorrectly and illogically” concluded the “Wall Street friend” reference meant The Wall Street Journal, it said.

“These same media outlets have also suggested that The Wall Street Journal is part of a conspiracy against Iran,” the statement said. “These are transparently false allegations.”

JTA — There are 28 Jewish members of Congress: 26 Democrats, one independent who caucuses with the Democrats and one Republican. Nine of them are senators and 19 are representatives.

Nine back the Iran deal, seven oppose it and 12 are undecided.

The positions of Jewish lawmakers are being watched as Congress decides whether to reject the July 14 agreement between Iran and world powers. The vote, to be held by the end of September, is expected go against the deal. The real question is: Will opponents manage two-thirds majorities in the House of Representatives and the Senate to override President Barack Obama’s promised veto of a rejection?

Counting Jewish lawmakers, as distinct from their colleagues, can be controversial. Some ask, why not just track overall whip counts? Are you counting African-American lawmakers? The answers are, respectively: Overall whip counts are being covered closely, and yes, blacks, too.

But doesn’t singling out Jews feed into Jewish loyalty and cabal stereotypes?
